DD8 has to do a project for second grade on a famous black American.

2 of the questions she needs to answer are:
How did this person help others?
Did this person endure hardship?

They learned about Martin Luther King and of course Obama could be used. The teacher mentioned Oprah and she also told one of the kids that Donovan McNabb was a good idea.

I would kind of like to help her find someone that she has heard of and maybe already knows something about. Any ideas?
She mentioned Bill Cosby. His son was murdered (hardship) and he set up a foundation to help others in his sons name. I like that she knows who he is but she said she wants to find other ideas and then decide.
Who would you pick?

One woman I admire greatly is Dr. Mae Jemison. She was the first black female astronaut in space. I don't know what hardship she endured beyond breaking through that incredible glass ceiling, but she has done many, many things to help others.

Go to this fabulous website.

www.achievement.org

They have great profiles on many worldwide leaders. I've used this website many times.

Rosa Parks? Ruby Bridges?

All wonderful ideas.

Benjamin Carson is a great idea.

Sojourner Truth, George Washington Carver, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou

She may not have heard of these people but it might be interesting for her to learn about them and not pick someone that several other children have chosen.

ETA: I really think Ruby Bridges is a great idea since she was a young girl. It's great for kids to learn that even kids can make a stand.

Garrett Morgan

Invented the gas mask, but no one would buy it because he was a black inventor. He had to hire someone else (white) to stand in for him during sales pitches so people would buy his mask. Yet when towns discovered was the real inventor, they refused to buy it. Not until he helped save a bunch of miners during a cave in did he prove himself and the mask... but even then he never truly got credit just because he was black (newspaper articles mentioned the great mask, but not Garret). Gas mask saved lives of thousands in WWI.

Bill Cosby is alright, as well. I just like looking for people off the beaten path so the teacher won't have 5 presentations on the same person to compare her report to.

I was going to suggest this. However, there may be some value in finding someone your DD does NOT already know about.
