I promised my Dw with a non- WDW vacation for a long time. We bought points at Hilton Head and finally used them there. We decided to go in Feb. during our kids' week off. So here was our trip.
We decided to leave on Sunday morning , Feb. 18 th right after Mass. We knew by leaving that late in the morning it will take two days to get down there. so our first night was on Monday the 19th. We live 28 miles north of NYC so we took the Garden State Parkway to the NJ turnpike and that went into the the Delaware Memorial Bridge. We then took I 95 through Baltimore. We have EZ Pass and much to our delight we did not stop for any tolls at all. Yipee!!! . We ate lunch at one of the rest stops near Baltimore. Then we decided to stop Southern Virginia for the night because we wanted to watch the Olympics too. So we called ahead and reserved a night in Emporia Va. for 59 bucks a night in a clean Best Western with 2 Queens. This was exactly half-way to Hilton Head 470 miles.
The next day we left at 8 am and drove through NC and got to Hilton Head at 2.50 pm.
I drove at 80-85 MPH on I 95 and saw no cops.
We checked in our huge 2 BR villa. it was sooo nice the theming . they had a mud room right next to the front door with a bench with the initals W.D. in it and Mickey Loves Minnie in a heart. I Rented bikes for us and we went bike riding two- three times a day. I got more exersise on this vacation lol. We biked to the Piggly Wiggly for our groceries each day. what nice ride. We swam every afternoon in the heated pool and just loved the Jaccuzzi too.
We decided to BBQ'd lunch the first day hot dogs and we BBQ'd huge thick Steaks for Dinner and we ate on our deck facing the marsh. we were in bldg. 17. Then we cleaned up and went to the disney sposored activity. i did not go Dw took the kids.. I cleaned up and then we watched the olympics.
On the second full day we went minature golfing and I went to play adult golf. I shot OK usual could not put a consitent round in. I shot a 102. on the OLd South course. we did our bike riding and pool again. We bought 2.5 pounds of shrimp and I made Shrimp Scampi. we cleaned up and did the bike thing and watched the olympics. I just could not get wnough of walking at night .. just the smells and the sopunds of the place. I was warm enough to walk around in shirt sleeves at night.
The third day the kids went on the pirate hunt and had a blast. i carried the jolly roger. We went swimming again rode our bikes to the Disney's Beach house and spent the whole day there. We stuck our feet in the ocean too cold to go in.. Ds's played in the sand. What a place just sophisticated luxury the Palmettos Dunes Plantation whre is the beach house is located. W rode back at dusk and decided to make a meal we bought up from home.. our easy version of Pasta Fettacunie.... pasta with Ragu parmesean sauce. and salad and veggies. we watched the fabulous Women 's Ice skating competition. The Gold medalist Sarah Hughes practices in Hackensack New Jersey right nrear where DW and I lived when we first got married. She lives on LI so she had to drive like 1.5 2 hours each way to practice each day.. ANYway.... it was great.
The last day they cancelled our dolphin cruise due to a boat engine malfuntion . So we decided to watch the sunrise at the Beach House it was sooo cool. We went swimming at the beach house and rode bikes. Played horseshoes.. BBQd our lunch. At 6pm took our kids to the Kids nite out at CommunitY Hall 40 Bucks total (DVC RATE) and they took them to see return to neverland by van to the local cinema.. fed them pizza and dessert. So DW and decided to eat out and walked over the bridge to one of the places at shelter cove. ithe name escapes me i think it was tom's seafood.. anyway i had crab cakes and dw had salmon it was ok we got 10% off DVC discount. Then we walked back to the villa.. put on sinatra on out portable boombox and had a romantic time in our jaccuzzi.. then i had to go and get the kids..
We left the next day at 8 am.. we made great time and got into the DC area at 5 30 pm. then we hit mega traffic. we got to Baltimore around 7:30 pm. by that time we decided not to drive all the way home. plus we have not ate dinner and it was a Friday during lent.. we had to eat fish. So we found a holiday inn express on exit 50a right in baltimore.. we checked inn and decided to drive to the inner harbor to eat. we ate at a seafood place had wonderful crab cakes (the real deal) and we had a nice walk around the harbor it was chilly though..lol. So we left the next morning at 8 am got home at 12 noon.. and unpacked and got to go my ds's blue and gold dinner for the cub scouts that night.
