My trip is ruined…Really?

Rarely do I post on the boards, but I have to say after listening to the podcast for several years and hearing Pete and the podcast crew speak repetitively of how people consider their vacations are ruined over the most trivial circumstances is most disturbing. Being in healthcare I consistently see people who lives change in the instant of a second for the worse. I know any one of them would change their situations in a heartbeat just to be able to travel let alone take a trip to a Disney park with loved ones. My thoughts are if a situation is not life threatening, everything is good so move on! If it rains, pack an umbrella, if there is a long line, get a fast pass for later and if you can’t get a specific dining reservation at a favorite restaurant, try a new one! The best piece of advice I have received is not how well you change in a situation, it’s how well you adapt.

I know the podcast crew has said this before, but consider yourself lucky to be able to go somewhere as special as a Disney park, because there is always someone who is worse off than you that may never have that opportunity.

Well said !!! I've seen first hand, how some people behave while at Disney....on my last trip, I saw someone getting very rude with a CM because they wanted to eat somewhere (don't remember where) and the CM was trying to get an ADR for them, at the time they wanted, and it was all booked up...they started to rant about how the vacation was going to be ruined because they couldn't eat at this place....and of course, the people didn't bother to make any ADRs in advance......it takes all kinds.

I don't get to go as often as I would like, but when i am there, I look around and remember how fortunate I am that I can be there.

If you look around the other forums, you'll see long threads of people complaining about trivial things that set them off. They are never looking at the big picture or willing to adapt to change if things go their way. These people probably are their own worst enemy but don't see it in themselves.

My DH and I do find it funny how little things really bother people to the point where they claim their vacation was ruined.

I mean line cutters bother me; but I dont let it ruin my vacation. We both tend to go with the flow.

One time on the plane home the satellite TV kept giving out. The woman sitting next to me started to freak out. First yelling at her husband how she cant believe the kids cant watch TV and how they paid all this $ for TV. (It didnt cost extra on my ticket). She kept saying to the attendants that she is going to write a letter to JetBlue when she gets home. The entire time both her kids were just reading quietly.

I am happy to be in Disneyworld on a rainy day than sitting at my desk at work.

One of the things I find funniest is the people who get mad because they see drunk people at the F&W Festival. I am not the biggest fan of public drunkeness but I'm not surprised by it either.

More people gotta let things roll off their back.

Totally agree! I have witnessed some pretty rude people in WDW (and everywhere else for that matter) who can really blow things out of proportion!

Regarding Jetblue, we flew with them last summer and my niece had an issue with her TV not working. I simply switched seats with her and they ended up giving the whole party a credit off our next flight. I didn't freak out, nor did she thank goodness, and all was well.

My world will not end if I can't eat where I would prefer or if a ride is out of service. I would rather miss out on that then be in the hospital.

I can even see being upset if the TV's didnt work at all; but in this case it was a little stormy. The funny part was she was yelling how this was a bad situation for the kids and I dont think the kids even noticed.

I can remember an incident during a trip a few years ago that was quite unnerving. We are DVC members and were staying at OKW. Things were going quite well, good weather, reasonable crowds at the parks. About half way through the trip the wife and I were walking along the sidewalk when this gecko darts out of the underbrush and across the sidewalk. It damn near scared me to death. I mean come on, this is a controlled Disney environment and they have these little scruffy lizards running around. After regaining my composure we kept walking and I noticed the things were EVERYWHERE. The place was literally crawling with the things. What was this? Jurassic Park? The next thing you know we'll have velociraptors and T-rexs roaming around the place. When we finally made it back to our room unscathed I fired off a letter to GEICO insurance to see if there was a copyright infringement thing going on here. I've yet to hear back from them, but i'm hoping for a finders fee of some kind.

We still go back each year, but i'm bound and determined not to let the little buggers get the drop on me again. I make sure to make my footsteps very loud (although the shock is causing some ankle and knee issues) and use a stick to stir up the bushes to scare the things away. I still can't believe they let lizards run wild around the place. The next thing you know I'll find out they have alligators on the property. Sheesh.

Funny you should say that! When we were in Magic Kingdom over easter weekend last year there WAS an alligator!!! It was a baby one and I think it was in the water under the bridge just before Splash Mountain!
A CM and I were staring down at it laughing. I am not sure what they did with the poor thing...

Well put everyone! A Disney vacation is a celebration of wealth and health and life is still life and stuff still happens but the bottom line is if you are there you had both the means and the ability to do so.
Lol, swissdog, you don't want to hear my Disney wildlife encounter stories then. Especially not the one with the baby 'gator. You should try adding ankle weights to help assist in the ground vibrations as you walk, maybe adding a pair of those light up shoes with the twinkling lights as you step will scare the little buggers off, eh?

I'm sure it was live trapped and moved to one of the 'quieter' sections of the property, or perhaps the pools alongside the driveway to the Shades of Green resort. They have a handful of small gators living there.

I read on the DIS that the Disney ships have run out of Mickey ice cream bars. I think my upcoming cruise might be ruined! :rotfl2:

While I agree with the sentiment that there are things that make us worse off than rain at Disneyworld or not eating at the restaurant of our choice, it is also very real to the people feeling the emotion that they are upset. I actually like hearing about these so called 'trivial' matters on the board because it helps us all put things in perspective and have a better time on any vacation. And once again, you have no idea what is driving that emotion for that person.

At work, I cleaned out the refridgerator and threw away something I thought was old. Turns out, someone re-used an old container that had an expiration date on it. When we realized my mistake, I gave her money to go buy lunch. She was so upset, she threw a tantrum (threw things at me, cried, punched the walls). I did not understand her reaction to such a trivial matter (it was a tiny little lunch anyway). Well, it turns out her husband abused her and controlled what she ate and if he found out about this incident he would beat her.

So before you think someone's reaction is trivial, step back and realize you don't know the full story either. And don't belittle anyone's emotions by saying that 'they could be worse off'.

Have to agree with Tinkerbellie here. OP has a good point, but in the past I have been around quite a few people that freaked over what most people consider trivial. (back when I was helping out the ex at a counseling center) There are more situations than people realize that have reactions caused from issues that might not even be related to what someone is said to be over reacting too.
Yes there are a lot of times people just over react, there are also a lot that have hidden issues behind it.

Thank you for the heads up, I just cancelled our cruise. :lmao:

I do understand that most people may be reacting to some underlying issue and not the trivial issue at hand. But I cant believe all these people have underlying issues, sounds like hidden disabilities.

I think when planning any vacation you need to, as another poster pointed out, ADAPT. Have a good time at wherever your reservation is, whatever the weather is, YOURE IN DISNEY!!!!!!
