Some of my tomatoes are splitting, and I'm not sure why. I did some checking and this is the kind of info I found.

There are different reasons for them splitting, that's probably why you are getting different stories. Usually lack of moisture, too much moisture, over-feeding or some kind of stress on the plant causes it. Usually by process of elimination you can determine what is causing it on your plants. Tomatoes usually start to crack during warm or rainy periods, especially if the soil has been dry prior to the rain or warm period.

So, which one is the correct answer, all of the above? :) I think it might be too late for the process of elimination.

Anyone else having this problem?

My answer to this dilemma, your soil was too dry before you over watered it.

Standing over those plants waiting for the tomatoes to ripen has been very stressful to them.

Are the cracks in the form of a :) calling "Feed me Kim"

Gotta love those experts. Now try and figure out one of the million reasons. Don't look at the crack, who cares if their not show tomatoes. It's how they taste, just have a tomato sandwich and Enjoy! Yummy crack and all!

Some of mine are too:( .

I don't know the reason but it seems like some years they just do that. I've heard that it has to do with improper watering (too much and then not enough).

The good thing is they still taste good. Nothing like fresh garden tomatoes. The only kind we'll eat.

Mine too!
So far only the beefsteak type are splitting. In our area it has to be due to lack of moisture and heat, since we haven't had rain or temperatures out of the mid nineties in forever!
I hand water the plants, but I'm certain that I'm not out there long enough for it to be a over-watering problem.

LOL Mamu! Is that like the watched pot that never boils? :) ;)

I'm not sure what the real reason is, but I know there are some kinds of tomatoes that are more resistant to splitting than others, and that's what I'll try next year.

My cherry tomato plant is producing like crazy, I can hardly keep up with it. It's very tricky making toasted tomato sandwiches with them, trying to get them to keep still while I make teeny tiny little slices........;) :)

Hi ryanpatricksmom, welcome to the F & G board!! :)

Sorry to hear that you and cgcw are having the same problem. Better luck next year to all of us!! :)

My tomatoes are cracking too. Not just the big beefstaek types either. I just thought it was do to dry weather followed by torrential rain.
Of course it could be due to stress. I've been known to stand over them. Probably worrying them into ripening too fast.

In any case they still taste terrific by cracky:bounce:

ROFLMAO kim...my cherries are doing great too....I am always handing a baggie to visitors, but i havent attempted grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches yet.

Usually you see the plitting when the tomaoes have been dry or had regulr, even watering and then suddenly get a lot. We recently had some rain for the first time in months, and I had splitters too. The tomatoes soak up the rain, the fruit swells, and the skin cracks. The skin just couldn't handle that extra water being pumped into the fruit. Just try and use them soon or keep an eye on them, as the open skin now allows disease and /or fruitflies into them too.

Good, common sense advice amcnj, thank you! :) :)
