This is somewhat complicated, so bear with me...
My daughter and I were supposed to go visit a friend later this week and because of circumstances beyond my control had to cancel. When I booked the tickets (6 weeks ago for the tickets there and 2 weeks ago for the tickets back) I used a combination of credit (from a previous flight) that expired on 12/31/07 and a credit card. About $100 was credit and $200 cc.
Now let me say that one reason I always try to fly SW is because they don't dock you for changing a flight; i.e. they don't charge you $50 plus any fare increase to change your ticket- just the change in fare. Also, they give you 12 months to use the credits before they expire Well, this is true...except when it's not...
I found out today, when I called customer relations, that when you combine credits with a new purchase ALL of the new purchase now expires when the credit that expires soonest expires. Soooo, I used $100 in credits, but all $300 of my tickets, INCLUDING the portion I just purchased 2 weeks ago expires 12/31/07. They will give me a one time 6 month extension BUT will dock me $50 PER TICKET to do so. Since my daughter and I were both going on this trip that means they want to dock me $200 of my $300 tickets, EVEN THOUGH I bought the tickets 6 weeks ago and 2 weeks ago.
When I asked how that made SW ANY different from any of the other airlines that charged me $50 to change a ticket the customer service rep told me they weren't actually "charging" me- um...if I have to pay $50 to change a ticket or $50 more for a ticket...I'M STILL PAYING $50!!!
Oh, and apparently I was informed of this policy...wait for it...
In my conformation email...AFTER I'd already purchased my ticket.
So, I'm sending a letter of complaint to the manager of the customer service department- fat good that'll do me, I'm sure.
Little changes here...little changes there...SW is becoming like all of the other airlines which makes me think there is not any reason left to favor them over anyone else.
