My Son Just Stepped On A Tack..........

I survived stepping on a nail when I was a kid. Though I think I scared the doctor. I screamed bloody murder when they were washing out the area..I thought it was a needle...not just a flexible suringe.

Also have stepped on a few tacks. I think he would be fine, long at he is attending to it, keeping it clean. If he just had a tentnus shot, he should be good, I think it's like 3yrs?

My son just called from college in SCOTLAND...he stepped on a tack and he said that it was one in HIS room. He said that it went into his BIG TOE but NO BLOOD. He said he is cleaning it now with peroxide. It is 8:30pm and Health Services is closed. AND he has friends that just landed at Glasgow Airport from Ireland to all go to EDINBURGH tomorrow for the whole day..................OMG..............I am freaking out. He said he had a TETANUS shot in June before he left for overseas.



SOMEONE TELL ME HE WILL BE FINE...........

Who says she overreacted? That's a judgement call.

She's worried because he's so far away. So when something happens and she can't be there, she worries more than she usually would, and comes to ask for advice and reassurance. Which she mostly found.

Kar, I think it'll be just fine with the advice you've received so far.

Karen..Thank you! Yes, Kendall and I have ADRs for a couple of nice dinners at Epcot while she is home. We are going to try to do a lot of fun things prior to Christmas. On December 27th, I'm having out-patient surgery, so the next week will be spent at home watching movies together and catching up on some quiet time.

Momrek..your being a Mother. And especially when your child (no matter how old he is) is in another country, you have the right to be a bit worried. You can't be there to kiss it and make it better.

Your DS knew just what to do!

He cleaned and bandaged his wound, thought about when his last shot was (that is pretty amazing if you ask me, most men wouldn't even remember that one would be neccessary) and called his Mom to make sure he hadn't forgotten anything!

And with him so far away it's only natural you'd worry... if he was home you could look at it, see for yourself it was gonna be okay, pat him on the head and send him on his way -- but when you can't see it, you gotta right, girl!
And helicopters have nothing to do with it!

MY RELLA BELLA BABY ...So funny about the shot because I could NOT remember about his tetanus and he did..."Mom, don't you remember I had to schedule a special MD appt for the tetanus before heading overseas!!" And then I agreed because his first stop was CRETE to dig for Pottery and the tetanus was a REQUIREMENT!!! You are right, thank GOD, he remembered that because at 8:30pm (his time) NOTHING was open as far as Health Servies on the campus.

My over reacting self, almost made him take a digital photo and post on my email his big toe...but I did not go there...

Maybe I will get Mike a model of a helicopter for him for XMAS....

OMG, Frog..too funny you should mention SCOTCH..because when this FIRST happened today...that was ALL the students had on HIS floor...btw drinking age is 18yo in the UK, so it was allowable BUT sheesh, MICHAEL get some peroxide ...which he then ultimately used....I could NOT believe it when he SAID TO ME (that he had used scotch to clean the puncture)........

I second the vote for the Scotch -- but please make it single malt. One never knows what goes into those blends. Have the lad wash that down with a deep fried Mars bar (available at finer chip shops in Glasgow) and he'll recuperate just fine.

I'm a father who cares about his one and only daughter very deeply, but I'm not a parent who overreacts when an adult child in a foreign country steps on a thumbtack in his own room.

OP, if your son calls you from Scotland after stepping on a little tack, I'd suggest he needs to disconnect the phone. I moved across the world (literally) to go to college and the last thing my mum needs to know about would be a little cut. I'll save that for broken bones.

But if you could go back and reread your OP, I think you could see how some might get that idea. I could see panicking over a life threatening injury. Or maybe if he were two, but he's twenty! And he sounds like he's doing just fine!

I sat on a tack once. It did no harm, unless the size of my butt now is a direct result of sitting on that tack! Just kidding! From one so-called "helicopter" parent to another, I'm sure it's much more worrisome when your off-spring is not within a short drive, let alone in another country. Karen, don't let the folks that say you are overreacting get to you. If they think you are overreacting, I can't imagine what they must think of me. I call Kendall every single night before I go to bed to make sure that she is okay. If I don't, I won't be able to sleep.

Sorry, folks! I know I have to let go, but some of us are just born worriers. Maybe that is why I now have an ulcer.

I don't worry because I want to and, I'm sure Karen doesn't either. It is just what makes us who we are.....very caring, wonderful, protective moms!
