My son is in kindergarten. The assistant in his class told me that she doesn't remember a kid reading so well so early in the year before. Yesterday the principal came in and listened to him read and was impressed. Since he's an only we always assume he's right where the other kids are. I had no idea. All the hours of reading together are paying off. I love to read, so he sees me with a book a lot of the time.

Thanks for letting me have a proud mom moment!!

I think that's great! It's always so nice when you know what you've been doing with your child is paying off. I always have my nose stuck in a book and read to my oldest son all the time when he was little. I was hoping he'd like to read like me, but he doesn't.

Way to go to your little boy though!!::bounce:

I always read to my DD when she was younger too, and I think it helps them to read better. Way to go for your son!:cool2:

WAY TO GO !!!! I too read to my son,(even when in was still hibernating, LOL) and he also read at an early age,, it is a good feeling knowing it paid off....CONGRATULATIONS to your son AND you!!!

Tink!!!

That's great. I'm another one who always read to the kids (and I'm always reading myself). Both my kids absolutely love to read. In fact, DS's Language Arts teacher (who had DD last year) calls him "Sir Booksalot".

Congrats to you and your son! He has a great headstart on his academic career.

Isn't it funny- DH and I are also parents of a singleton- we also just assumed our DD was about on par with other kids when it came to her academic achievement. We were in for a big shock when, at her Kindergarten teacher conference, we were told that she was head and shoulders above most of the other kids. There were kids in her class that didn't know any alphabet letters!:earseek: We realized then that we had actually done a pretty good job of preparing her for school! LOL! I guess it's hard for parents of only kids to have a frame of reference.::yes::

Thanks for all your nice comments. My mom does not like to read but read a lot to me anyway. She even read the "Peanuts" dictionaries to me. Did anyone else have those? I remember coloring while she read them to me. They had illustrations of Charlie Brown and Snoopy.

We had a Sesame Street series of books that I had to read to my DD EVERY night for at least two years.

Please make sure the school keeps him challenged! if he is advanced from his class, he may become bored with reading if he's reading what they are all reading.

Both of my DD's are reading at advanced levels- the 2nd grader at late 3rd and my 3rd grader at early 5th. We have SFA here for a reading program, so they stay challenged, and are not with classmates for reading.

I come from a family of readers, DH does not. I see the difference in my kids and their cousins. I've been reading to/with the girls since they were babies. It sure does pay off

and it certainly makes mom proud huh!

Congrats to DS...oh- and be prepared, as he gets more advanced, the price of books goes up- and they end up reading chapter books in an evening! We visit the library 2x a week to keep up with this!
