My son has Mono!

We all started out with a stomach virus around the first of September then he ended up with a fever that lasted 5 days. He got after 5 days of running a fever of around 103. On the seventh day he couldn't talk. His throat was so sore, and he also had a low grade fever. I felt his neck, and his lymph nodes were almost the size of an egg.

Needless to say he has lost almost 20% of his body weight, and he is only 8!


Talk about feeling helpless. At least he is smiling now!

Parents watch out for these symptoms. I have a student (2nd grade) who has it too! Her mother said the child's doctor said he has seen a lot of cases recently.

My DD had this about 2 years ago at 18. That was about the sickest she's ever been!

I hope he's feeling better.

My second grade came home with sore throat Friday took him to the dr yesterday and he was postive for strep throat, this is the fourth time this yr and he had his tonsils and adnoids removed when he was 22 months old.

I had mono when I was 22. It wasn't fun. Just try to keep him comfortable, good luck!

Poor baby. When I had mono at 16 I lost about 15 pounds in a week. My throat was about swollen shut. My eyes were so swollen that my classmates didn't recognize me when I finally went back to school. I think every gland in my head and neck was super sized.

Make sure he gets lots of rest when he starts to feel better. It takes a long time to get your strength back.

Oh goodness. I had a very bad case of mono last fall. I'm sure you don't want to hear the details of my tonsils, LOL ... but it made me so sick, and then so weak for a very long time afterwards. Poor kid.

Make sure he takes it easy until the doctor says it's okay to do so... as it can be very dangerous with the enlarged spleen.

I see lots of popsicles, milkshakes and chicken soup coming up!

Hope he starts feeling better soon. Let us know how he's doing.

Yes do be careful of that! Girl across the street was 14 and died from a ruptured spleen when she had mono!
I had it when I was 18- I was out of work for about 8 weeks...went back and had a relapse for another 4 weeks. I am sure there are varying degrees of it, I was hospitalized for a few days the first time I had it.

I am terrified of my son's spleen rupturing. He can be so "rough-and-tumble" at times.

I can tell he feels better, but I am scared he will over do it. My student has returned after being out a week and a half. She seemed fine, but I would not let her play during recess.

She had no restrictions! Isn't that strange?

Oh, I hope he's all better soon. Mono is so unpredictable.

DD's friend (she's 15) just found out she has it. And she was hanging around at my house quite a bit recently. I sure hope it didn't spread.

wow that's young to have Mono! The poor kid! Maybe because their bodies are so strong at that age they get over it quicker?? I was IN BED for over 6 weeks when I had it at 18. Took quite a while to get over it.
