My son broke his arm!

Poor little guy! Hope he feels better real soon...summer is coming, so get him one of those plastic arm covers at a medical supply place, good for going for a dip and for the tub/shower too!

My DD has had a broken arm and a broken leg in her 17 years! 1st one, she thought she was "Tinkerbell" and jumped off of a picnic table at pre-school, I guess she thought she could fly.... at 4 1/2!! That night while getting her ready for bed, DH was helping with her shirt(a turtleneck) and off came the cast with the shirt! I thought DH was going to die, the look on his face was priceless. There he was holding the red turtleneck with a cast inside of the sleeve, poor guy thought he'd pulled her arm right off! Where's the camera when you really need it! I guess the swelling had come down quite a bit and it slipped right off and back to the hospital we went!

It's all I can do since it happened to keep him still. This is one very active and atletic little boy (7 years old). No bike or scooter riding (and yes, I have caught him trying to do both already). No basketball (yeah, Mom, I can dribble with my left hand, you know). No baseball or wrestling. And I want to ban Manhunt, but doubt I'll have any success in stopping him from doing that.

My son is 6 now (last Nov) but I went through a very similar thing with him last May when he was 5. He fell off the monkey bars (isn't supposed to do them without me under him- but he snuck and did it... I was at the park with 3 kids, can't be with all 3 of them every second- I was with the youngest who was 2yrs at the time) and broke his arm- AT the elbow... in 2 places there- the little corner of it was loose completely broken off inside there.

He did have to have pins.
But it was awful- right at the end of May.... an entire summer (since our schools start at beginning of Aug and he'd just got his cast off a week before starting Kindergarten) of him not being able to play outside daily, swim daily out back, go to water parks constantly to beat the heat here in Texas, no bike, no skates, no basketball, no soccer.
Awful... you have my deepest sympathies! He had no pain or anything like that- it was just trying to get him through 2mo of not being able to do anything! I think his broke arm was worse on me than him! (atleast I sure remember those 2mo more than he does.... which is obvious by the fact that he's still a heathen child trying to break bones again by being so fearless all the time LOL)

That's good it wasn't in a bad area like joint or growth area.. we still aren't sure how this might effect my son's arm. He still can't make that arm completely totally straight at the elbow and it's bigger (around- not noticable except to those that know- like his now gray haired mom... me) there still.

So sorry, as a Mom I know your stomach was in knots.
I have a suggestion for an active and competitive child,
chess is a great strategy game. It's a battle and great for
the brain. The first steps like learning how the pieces move
and their names are pretty easy.
Also, if for some reason the cast has to be changed, ask about
a waterproof one. They are a little more expensive but
worth it in the summer when baths are more often and
an occassional wading pool would be in order.

Kids and broken bones!! Been there, done that, as a kid with the break and as a parent to the breakee! It sure seems harder when you're the parent. A speedy recovery to your little guy!

Does he have a fiberglass cast with a Gortex liner? If they can put that on, maybe he could swim for his exercise after a few weeks? Rough time for an active little fellow to be in a cast. So sorry!
