My short thoughts on DL

Hi all!

We've finally got back and settled a little bit from our vacation to DL and instead of doing a day by day, I thought I'd just share some of my observations.

We're WDW vets, and this was our first time going to DL. We're also vacation club members, so we stayed in a 1 bedroom at the Villas. They were very nice.

You know, so many people comment on the castle, and I was just listening to see if my family cared. They didn't. It was "Look, it's smaller" and on we went. We enjoyed the rides that are unique to DL and made sure we rode those. My kids kept saying "the same, but a little different".

You know, after a few days, I realized I missed the busses at WDW. It's funny, because we've gotten used to getting a snack to eat on the way back to our hotel. But at DL, because you walk everywhere, that built in down time by having to ride the busses is gone. I actually missed that. I thought it was busier because you had to walk everywhere. It was nice that everything was so close, but that downtime to just hang out is gone unless you make it.

We used the meal vouchers, and I honestly think a bigger issue is made out of them on these boards. I didn't find them hard to use. In fact, the last of our 8 days, I had like 10 $5 snack vouchers left. We used them to pay the bill at Storytellers. Everyone we encountered was like "these are cash. Use 'em"

One nice thing being vacation club members was if you show your membership card, you save 10% at most food places. I got to use the 10% off, then pay for it with the vouchers. Most places, I'd add no more than $5 cash to pay for the orders. I thought they were pretty easy to use, and the rules were less restrictive than the good old "snack" vouchers from WDW back in the day.

We booked our transfer from LAX on the Disneyland Resort Express. They were so inconvenient, we apparently had just missed it, and it wasn't due back for almost an hour. So we grabbed a Shuttle One van who took us for $15 a person. I think next time instead of booking with their rigid schedule, I'd just use Super Shuttle or Shuttle One. Much more convenient.

We ventured off property to do Legoland and Knotts Berry Farms through Greyline tours. We booked these through Disney. They were very easy to use and we had a good time. We also ended up catching an Angels game and taking a cab to the stadium. The stadium was awesome and it wasn't hard to do either.

All in all, we had a great trip. Thanks in advance to all of your help beforehand! Y'all made me feel so knowledgable!

Glad you had fun. I love to hear what WDW vets think after their first time at DLR.

I think the problem with the food vouchers is, there is no advantage to use them. If you got more money in vouchers than you paid, then it would be a good deal. Otherwise, it is just easier to pull out a credit card. Can I ask, did you get change back when you spent under $5?

Did you have a favorite ride or attraction at DLR? :)

That's nice you were able to get around to some other things too. :thumbsup2 Thanks for the mini report. :goodvibes

Alright got to know a few questions as I was a WDW vet.

Did you get to see Remember Dreams Come True Fireworks?
Aladdin stage show in DCA?
What did you think of Pirates, Space Mtn, Tiki Room?
Fantasmic!????

Personally I think they are all superior to WDW and all of Fantasyland is superior to WDW.

Curious to hear what you thought.

Ok I must say I have never missed the buses! My nerves are so much better when I don't have to deal with them like at WDW. To me the busses erase some of the "glow" I just stored from things like the MK "goodnight kiss". I love to not lose any good vibes between the parks and my bed!

But please....more details and opinions! From each member of your party!

Sounds like a good and upbeat trip. Thx for sharing that with us. :wizard:

I could not agree more about the dreaded busses!! haha :lmao: I love, love, love WDW..but hate, hate, hate the bus system..in fact last time I went we rented a car just to avoid having to wait on busses...my next trip to WDW..I will be renting a car as well..so much easier to just drive to the park you want to be at!!

LOL! :rotfl: I think we'll be in this boat of NOT missing buses!! We stay on in monorail properties to avoid them as it is!

More, more, more please! Love hearing DLR in the eyes of a WDWer like myself!

I knew in advance to use the vouchers for the full amount. It wasn't hard, in that I have 2 kids, and one can't have something without the other wanting. So it's always buying 2 of something.

My kids liked the Monsters Inc ride, only because my son got the Screamer of the Day and we could ride it without waiting.... And this was my son's first trip riding the coasters, so his answer was of course Space Mountain. I was expecting them to really like other rides, but we rode that Monsters Inc ride like 7 times before lunch that day. :-)

Alright got to know a few questions as I was a WDW vet.

Did you get to see Remember Dreams Come True Fireworks?

Yes we got to see the fireworks, right after Fantasmic on it's opening night. They were nice, but you know??? The stories are OLDER. I didn't realize there was so much Pinocchio and Mary Poppins. My son (thankfully) had seen Pinocchio at school so he was familiar with the story line. But had he not, it wouldn't have made any sense to him.

Aladdin stage show in DCA?
Actually, we did! We were walking back to Tower of Terror on our first day there, and the guy announced 2 minutes to Aladdin. So we walked right in. I still have the Preferred seating vouchers somewhere. We never used them. We thought the show was great. This couple by us had a child that started crying and the Genie was "that baby is crying because of YOU" to Aladdin. Funny yes, I probably would have felt pretty small if I was the parent though.
What did you think of Pirates, Space Mtn, Tiki Room?
My kids liked Space Mountain because you sit 2 to a seat as opposed to Bobsled style (which, now that I'm mentioning it, they LOVED the Matterhorn bobsleds)
We liked Pirates, and liked it even more when we got to eat at Blue Bayou and watch them go by. We did the Tiki room and I just thought it was missing something. It was nice to see the original version, but I guess I just missed the fighting with the "New Management" :-)

Fantasmic!????
We got the dessert package for the opening night on Friday. My whole family thought the dragon was MUCH better, and there's that whole "wow" factor when the ship comes out and they're having a REAL pirate fight. That was pretty cool. I didn't much care for the whole crowd issue, but I guess that's unique to DL.

Personally I think they are all superior to WDW and all of Fantasyland is superior to WDW.

I don't know if I'd say superior, but each time we'd get off a ride, we'd say "the same, but a little different". I think I prefer WDW because they handle crowds a little better. Curious to hear what you thought.

OK--- let me rephrase that. I miss the downtime that is provided by the busses. We used to live in Gainesville FL and would drive down. So if it was an issue of getting from one place to another we just drove. BUT, we'd take the busses to the parks. I just kind of felt because we were always walking somewhere, we never had that downtime to just sit and rest some. Unless someone said "let's sit here and rest" And being with kids, they aren't going to offer up to do that. That's punishment to them!

So yes, I realize the busses are a pain when going from hotel to hotel.... but in our 8 days we didn't have much downtime at all....

See? And now that I think about it, we had quite a bit of our magic erased.... they were testing the World of Color during our stay. So we'd get the kids to bed, and around 10:30 they'd start blaring that thing. After awhile, we were quite sick of it. The villas are so nice that with the doors closed you don't hear park noise. But WOC?? OMG!!! It was like your kids having the living room TV on full blast and it's rattling the walls! We could hear everything loud and clear!

On our first day to sleep in since it wasn't a park day, they ran their first test at 7 that morning. Everyone was awake and CRANKY!!

So even if we did come home with some magic, it was erased by the testing of WOC.

WOC is really, really loud. We were staying in room by the GCH pool and it boomed and rattled. I can only imagine how bad it was in the villas!!!

How was the Greyline Tour to Legoland? We're thinking about doing that because I just can't bear to drive another hour once we get there.

Wow that is too bad. That will be really inconvenient for families when they are running 2 shows at night .

Thanks for your mini-review. :thumbsup2

I love the "buses" comments. :lmao:

But you're right....everything is SO close together at DLR, one needs to schedule (or fit in) some down time. Many of us take the afternoon nap/swim/rest. But also I like to sit in the GCH lobby for a few minutes....or next to the Golden Zephyr....or near the Mickey & Walt statue....or people watch near the Rivers of America...or a dozen other great places to relax & retool before going commando again. :)

Regarding the Dining Plan & why many of us quickly jump on it with negative comments....:

1. It's nothing like the WDW dining plan & we don't want folks to compare it (or the castles ;)) at all.

2. Maybe by all of us going negative on it...someone at Disney will wake up & create a modified version of WDW's superior dining plan for DLR. I'd love to be able to purchase a meal plan that was discounted but allowed me to sample 2-3 nice sit down restaurants during our stay.

Glad you had a good time at Walt's Park. :hippie:

:)

Take it for what it's worth, ...but I do think there will be some changes with your dining plans especially with the advent of the new DVC--it will pull way more guests from WDW who expect more for the dining. I've thought for some time that the powers that be are slowly transforming DLR to be more of a "staycation" rather than a day-tripper visit. We'll see.

My thoughts exactly! When we started planning this vacation, I had points to use to stay the 8 days. And when I called I was surpised to not have the options for 8 days of tickets. Then when I asked about a meal plan, I was told "Well, you can't purchase the meal plan without buying tickets" I told the woman "Who said I wasn't buying tickets too?" It's almost like they automatically assumed I wouldn't. I thought it was weird.

One side note-- we had a free day and decided to try the PCH Grill for dinner. SO being the WDW vet I am, I called for a PS.... we were the only one in the restaurant at 5:30 for a whole HOUR!! What a shocking thing to experience. The food was great and it was one of our cheapest meals on property. We got to go around to all the photo places that they use in the morning and create goofy pictures...It turned out to be one of our favorite meals while we were there. If they retooled the dining plan, people would discover gems like this...

It wasn't bad. We had to meet the bus outside the hotel at 8:30, and within 10 minutes we were at their central office. You exchanged your voucher for your tickets and loaded your correct bus. It was about 45 minutes by bus.

When you get there, they tell you the time to be back by. My husband and son were back at the hotel by 6. They had a great time.

I agree. Lots (& lots) of folks book 10-12 day WDW vacations. (with side trips or waterparks or a day of golf or whatever). If folks want to buy a 7, 8 or 10 day hopper at DLR....it's silly not to offer it.

But even more important (imo) would be offering a WDW type dining plan at DLR. Obviously DLR doesn't have the choices of WDW.....but for a typical 3-5 day visit I can think of a dozen restaurants (many of them "gems" like you describe) that I might plan my "meal time" around if I was offered a "dining plan" similar to WDW. I've had great meals at the Trattoria, Carnation, Ralph Brennans, Goofys & the Italian place in DTD (can't remember the name). With a dining plan, I'd probably try others.

Plus....why oh why don't they have an Ohana type restaurant & a Brown Derby type restaurant (the original was in Hollywood for gosh sakes) at DLR?? (or one could pick 2-3 other WDW favorites)...they'd be huge successes imo.

Don't change the castle......;)......but give us a WDW type dining plan. :hippie:
