Just got back from the Poly on Sat and had to tell you all what happened when I checked in on Nov 6th. We were traveling with another family and had connecting rooms. Their room wasn't ready when we checked in so we had the bellman bring all the suitcases to our room. We had 4 medium suitcases and 2 small between the 2 families. He unloaded the bags and I handed him $5 in singles(noone had any other small bills)he proceeded to slowly count the money and then give us the mother of all dirty looks. My friend just looked at him and said"thank you" and he left. Normally, I would've sought him out to add a few more dollars to his tip, but after that rude behavior, forget it! Now, I don't travel often but isn't the general "rule" $1.00 a bag? I would've given him probably $8-10 if I had had it on me, but he acted like we totally stiffed him. Oh, btw, he brought the bags from the GCH to our room in Raratonga if that makes a difference, lol.

That is totally not exceptable behavior for a CM. I would send an email to WDW and let them know what happened. They should be gracious no mater what the tip. I don't consider what you gave to inadequate. That behavior I would expect at the airport NOT at WDW!!

I wonder if it is the same bellman that we had this last trip. I'm sorry but I can not tip every single person that touches my luggage. I tipped the bellman that brought our luggage from the room to the storage area, but it was a different guy that brought our luggage out of the storage area and the Mears driver loaded the luggage...so no I didn't tip the second bellman, and he actually asked for one!

The way I look at is if you ask for one then you are definately not getting one

Amazing behavior! I had a bellman at the Contempary beg for a tip. This guy met our car and went on and on on how he works just like the cab drivers, yada yada yada. I can't recall his spiel word for word, but I got the message and told him "alright already. I get it. You're getting a tip as soon as I get my wallet out". My mother and gf were disgusted and said I should have given him nothing. I never experienced that before.

Having worked in the hospitality industry, I can assure you there is no excuse for asking for a gratuity, or counting it in the presence of the gratuiter.

As for not tipping "every single person that touches my luggage", try transferring your luggage a few times without bell services. I think you will change your mind.

While on vacation, I tip often and generously. . . that is part of my vacation; not having to worry about those things. The cost is factored in, and it is well worth it.

Oohhh, that would've ticked me off! So much so that I probably would've snatched one of the bills back and politely said, "Oops! Sorry, my mistake".

Or just look at them with a quizzical look on your face and say' Oh, did I give you too much?' See how quickly they leave then....:)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the fellow who unloads your car doesn't get tipped the same as the bell--correct? I've always tipped the man at the care $2-3 total, but the bell around $1/bag. This year the guy at the car didn't seem too thrilled when I rolled out a few dollars instead of a wad. Told me I had to move my car right then (when there were others blocking the drive and I was at the side). I didn't let it bother me--it was the first day of vacation. But I don't like to be a cheapskate.

Okay - I tip a buck a bag when they bring my bags to my room or back out again - am I supposed to tip if they leave it at the door and then your shuttle comes? You tip from door to shuttle? Is that right? I have not tipped those guys before... I figure I just tipped for them to bring it out from my room. Please enlighten me. I agree - I don't want to tip everyone who even breathes on my luggage. Am I a cheapskate?

Sorry...the guy unloading the car can pull the "bellman switch" if he wants to but I'm not double tipping. Whoever brings the luggage to the room (or puts it into storage if the room isn't ready) gets the tip.

As some one who rarely uses bell service and lugged half her house into the CR during the past two hurricanes, I think I can safely say I'm still quite happy doing it myself and don't see me changing my mind on it not being worth it.

That stated, I travel alone and I prefer to move my luggage around myself. Why should I have some guy/gal waste his/her time on me and my one or two bags (that I am quite capable of taking care of) when he/she can be helping out people who truly want, or need, his/her help? :)

Never had problems like those mentioned at WL, but at BCv they really mess around with the luggage. I have to say the Dolphin was the BEST, the person unloading my car actually said no to the tip, of course I insisted, the car was a mess and the kids had not really repacked well for the hotel switch. The bell person bringing the luggage to the room was so amazing with all the tips and help he gave us--totally worth the tip and again very gracious.
BCV, well now that I know I can self park in the back and carry up my own luggage and groceries, let's just say I'll be doing that if I ever stay there again! I don't mind taking up my own luggage, and though I view tipping as part fo my vacation expences, there is no excuse for rude behavior.

Firstno, I wholeheartedly agree! I always haul my luggage myself. I'd rather spend the money on something else, and it's worth the extra few minutes it takes me to do it. We'll be coming down next year on a trip that will last 2 weeks total (including driving time) and will have a mountain of luggage. Plus, we'll be switching resorts at WDW once. No way I'm blowing $10 minimum every time I need luggage moved from the car to the room, back to the car, to another room, back to the car again. I understand it may be a long haul at times, but it's still worth it to me.

I would rather tip and only worry about the kids. I cannot manage the kids luggage and checking in all at the same time. I tip 1/bag at the room.

Sorry to hear about the bellman, I would let disney know about this. It's never happened to us.

When we stayed at The Contemporary we had a wonderful bellman. He brought us up to our tower room, telling us little disney trivia along the way. Once we got to the room, he gave us a tour, and showed us all the hidden mickey's. He then said "I hope you didn't expect a great veiw from this room, you can barely see anything." The look on our faces was priceless, you mean we payed all this money to see the magic kingdom, and we can't see it (we didn't tell him this, we just thought it) Then he opened to curtain and it was the most wonderful sight I have ever seen. The Magic Kingdom was right there. I wish I knew his name so I could write and let Disney know about him. He was well worth the tip

I'm so sorry that happened to you. :( We had just the opposite experience a few months back. On our arrival day last March, we got there quite early in the morning. We weren't expecting our rooms at ASMo to be ready but we wanted to go ahead & do early check in so we could head to the parks. I tried a few times in late afternoon to call to get our room assignments but could never get through. No big deal since I knew I could find out at the front desk when we returned from the parks.

I think it was about 10:00 when we got back to ASMo and since it had been a long day we were quite tired. Luckily, there was no wait time at the front desk so we were able to get our room assignments quickly. A CM at the door noticed us as we were looking for a luggage cart & he offered to unload our van and take the luggage to our rooms. There were 5 adults in our party and we each had several bags so, since we were tired, we accepted his offer. He unloaded at the lobby front door & pushed the cart to our rooms which were in the Toy Story building.

By the time we drove around to the closest parking to our rooms & walked up, the CM was already there. We told him to just unload everything in one room (we had 3) & we would take it from there but he very graciously said it would be no trouble to go to all 3 rooms. I then offered him a tip ($1/ bag &, as I said, there were several bags) & he said, "You don't have to tip me." I insisted he take the tip and he said, "Are you sure?" I told him I was absolutely sure. It was worth it to not have to fool with our luggage since we were all so tired. I had to practically force him to take it. He thanked me & kept asking if there was anything else he could do. He was great!

As a sidenote...I don't know if we were just lucky but every CM we had contact with at ASMo had a wonderful attitude and was very helpful and we made sure to express our thanks to them. They certainly helped us have a magical time...thank you again, CM's...you are much appreciated!

We normally stay concierge and have nevered had a problem with service or tips being graciously recived. We tip a dollar per bag, sometimes additing a couple of dollars extra when leaving because my DD has added to her extensive collection of Disney plush - she usually brings at least eight from home and adds four to six more per trip.

However, with the exception of when we transfer from one Resort to another and our luggage is waiting at the second, we have always had just one bell hop waiting on us from front door to room and room to auto.

Also we tip Room Service three dollars per room in the mornngs and two dollars for turn down service in the evenings.

At the Yacht Club we took our luggage to the car ourselfs when we checked out because of a long wait for a bell hop. The Concierge staff was not happy with us for doing so. Who cares!

Last year at the Hard Rock Hotel (Club Level) we had one person take our luggage down and another load it in the car. We started to tip the person who brought it down and was told just to wait and tip the person loading it in our car. We gave her a few dollars anyway but thought it was nice of her to tell us who should be tipped.

I can't believe he actually counted the tip in front of you! I would've been tempted to snatch it right back also! I completely understand that these are tipped positions and the CMs make their livings from these jobs, but there is never an excuse for rude behavior.
