My renter seems to be going out of their way to make sure we get what we want. We decided to take our chances and not rent until the 7MO window. The renter has sent us emails each of the last few weeks to tell us availability still looks good.

Today, she told us she would book two days before our window opens to make sure we get what we want. And, she had given us a contract that allowed us to pay 10% at time of contract, 40% at booking, and 50% three months prior to reservation.

So, have we found the best renter ever, or am I missing something?

I'm confused. You are the renter who is paying an owner to rent their DVC. I think I'm confused with how you are using the word "renter." You're referrring to the owner, right? And yes, I'd say they are doing a great job for you.

That makes sense. For some reason in my head I was thinking of the owner as the renter and me as the rentee.

It appears to me as the member is booking 7 days at your reservation date plus 2 at that 7 month date.
IE: You want to start your reservation on May 1, 2018; that original booking date for 7 months out would be Nov 1, 2017; and the owner is booking 7 nights starting Oct 30, 2017; OP, how long are you looking to stay?
If only 5 nights then the member booking the room is taking advantage of the 7 night window and will drop the first two nights at some future date.
If 7 nights then the member will have to call in each day there after to extend your reservation and drop the first night off the reservation to get the reservation you actually want.

Do you mean June 1 instead of May 1 (only six months). We are staying six nights. I think I understand what you're saying. And, I'm especially impressed that you understand it! :)

Nov 1 book on this date, Dec 1, Jan 1, Feb 1, Mar 1, Apr 1, and then May 1st is the first date you can reserve at 7 months out.

Incorrect. June 1 is the 7 month date for a Nov 1 booking.

OP, it seems as if your owner is doing everything he/she can to make sure you get the reservation you desire. Kudos to them.

You found a nice person to rent from. Are you trying for a hard to get reservation, standard view someplace?

2BR savanna Kidani, so I knew from drusba ‘s data that 7 mo usually had availability in June. I actually found the owner through another board that allows you to post your needs. I didn’t have much luck like finding a match on these boards.

You're renting from a very reasonable person. I never felt comfortable demanding 100% payment before booking (it was something I would not be comfortable with doing if I were on the other side). I have asked for 25% before booking, 50% at booking, and then remaining 25% 3 mo before date of travel, so it sounds similar...

Your owner sounds nice.

So...on the rent board you don't find a match; you find someone with points and respond to their thread asking if they are able to make your reservation. Inside each thread is where you post your needs; you just can't make that its OWN post. Here, the owners create the posts and the renters respond.

If you would like a rent a reservation, please reply to a DVC Member who has posted a thread offering to make a reservation ("Points for Rent") or offering an existing reservation ("Reservation for Rent"). If you are a DVC Member looking for a transfer of points into your account, please reply to a DVC Member who has posted a thread offering to transfer points ("Points for Transfer").

  • If the arrival date is within 7 months, simply reply to any DVC Member who has posted a thread offering to make a reservation or offering an existing reservation. Specify the resort, villa size (Studio, 1BR, 2BR, Grand Villa) and dates of stay for your desired reservation.
  • If the arrival date is more than 7 months away you will need to rent from someone who is an owner at your desired resort. Reply to those members offering to make a reservation at the same resort where you would like to stay. DVC Members can make reservations at their Home Resort 11 months or less prior to arrival. At 7 months or less, any DVC Member may reserve at any resort, based on availability. Again, the dates and villa size will be required.

Hope that helps for the future.

Yes, I knew how it worked, it just didn’t work for me. I actually responded once, an owner said he would do it, but then stopped replying to my messages.

The other board was much more effective and user friendly. I posted my needs, and within 2 hours had three responses, one of which was Daves. My owner gave me a much better deal, with a contract and references. And, I was able to figure out a website they administered and was very impressed.

I know TheDis has their security reasons for doing it they way they do it, it just didn’t work for me. I would always recommend the other site.

I have no problem with you using another site to book your reservation, and hope you are happy with what you found. I do find it very funny that you came back here to ask opinions about your booking. Seems if you were comfortable, you would just ask over there. Just me, but I would think about why my concerns over the deal were making me post for validation on another site.

There’s still a lot of folks here whose opinion I trust and value, more so than anyone I’ve met on the other site. TheDis boards are great. I went to the other site ONLY because I couldn’t get a deal here. That’s the one thing that the other site is much better at. And from the number of people who have personally contacted me because of this thread, there are others who aren’t having luck here either.

Ok. From your words it didn’t seem like you knew.

I doubt if it’s security-based, but they probably just chose one way of having the focus, and owners were “it”.

Though maybe it is security; I personally would rather be able go back in posting history and see “who” the person is before putting my faith and money towards someone. A la “the gift of fear”, when wanting to get a reservation and send money, I’d rather approach someone rather than have them approach me. :)

Glad it worked for you, wished it would have worked for me.

But at seven months out, all points are equal. What guarantees that she will get you the six nights you need at seven plus two? Especially if someone else books any of the six nights before she does? Walking works at eleven months out, not so sure at seven months out.

I still prefer to think the owner was doing me a good deed, perhaps booking a couple of days early in case others were booking on the same date, since we arrive on a weekend. I guess I’m a glass half full kind of guy.
