My puppy has severe Hip Dysplasia :(

Just got back from the vet a little while ago. Unfortunetly Roscoe is not a good candidate for the TPO surgery because he already has damage to the joints. our options are to wait another 6 months and do a hip replacement or do another surgery call Femoral Head and Neck Osteotomy ( FHO). We are going with the FHO (Vet reccomended this option). We are going to wait about 1 month before we schedule the surgery do to the fact that I'm 2 weeks away from having a baby and the recovery is going to be tough for Roscoe. We are also going to change his diet to Hill's JD (Joint Diet) food. The vet said he's see alot of dogs have good results with that food alone.

Thanks for all of the well wishes and I'll update after his surgery.:)

I don't recall saying it can never happen. What I did say was that in a 6 month old puppy, dysplasia this severe would be a somewhat rare occurrence with OFA'd good or better parents.

And I will contest your theory that it is "quite common" to see hip dysplasia with good or better parents. Yes, it happens, but it certainly is not "quite common." And no, it is not a guarantee, but severe dysplasia, requiring surgery at 6 months is not common at all in a dog with cleared parents. But that is why researching your breeder is so important. The OFA is a searchable database. It is rather easy to pull up a breeder's dogs and see how they scored.

I am sorry you have had a bad experience, but in a related example, our breeder has been showing/breeding for over 35 years. They require all puppies, even the pet puppies, to be OFA'd so that they can keep track of what their dogs are passing on. (They pay for it.) Out of 35 years of litters, you don't even need your toes to count how many dogs have had severe dysplasia. And their incident of borderline or below is also way lower than "quite common."

Actually, in twelve years of clinical experience as a veterinarian and almost twenty years of show experience, I do find it quite common (as opposed to 'very rare') to have a dysplastic dog appear in a litter from OFA clear parents. Hip dysplasia is not a simple recessive/dominant trait. Environmental factors and even breed predisposition can determine the percentages of dogs that will be OFA clear. Your breeder may have high clearance rates, but that may be common in that particular breed and an impossible goal in another. http://www.offa.org/hipstatbreed.html

I also think that from a general standpoint, the OFA statistics are fairly low, as many radiographs that are obviously dysplastic are never sent to OFA for evaluation.
I do still believe that the incidence of dysplasia clear dogs producing dysplasia clear dogs is higher than unknown or dysplastic dogs producing dysplasia clear dogs, so I think when buying a puppy, people should buy from radiographed dysplasia clear parents.

Completely off topic, but I saw your baby ticker and Meadow Rose is a name we are considering for our new addition!! Small world to hear that name somewhere else!

Wow! That's too funny. Not a very common name at all. Just curious how you came up with it? I picked the name Meadow about 10 years ago when the Sopranos first came out. It just always stuck with me. Rose is a family name on both sides for us.

We were thinking of Sparrow, Willow, Meadow, etc. I think they are beautiful names, but my sil's sister named her ddd Willow, and I think my hubby liked Meadow over Sparrow. We haven't fully decided yet. lol. We still don't even know if its a girl or a boy.
