Is this normal? :confused3 It kinda freaked me out... I thought he was going to sniff it like all thes other times but then he eat a big chunk! UGH! I don't want him licking my hand now... or anything in this house for that matter...

Our dog was doing this, and eating grass, then getting sick. We ended up having to send him to that Great Dog House in the Sky.:(

I hope that doesn't happen to you.

:rotfl2: how old is your puppy exactly? I know ive had dogs in the past who couldnt help but to eat there own poop and vomit.

if it becomes a common thing, maybe try a different food for them or make sure he/she is getting enough to it. it could of been out of curiosity, but its not good if they make it a habbit.

Awww... I hope not! He's too adorable! but that poop fetish has got to go.

my dog doesnt eat his poop ...but one of my dogs cleans the litterbox out for me :rotfl2: No Kisses for Harleigh!!!

Our puppy did this at 5 months. He outgrew it but it was gross for a while. The vet said to put meat tenderizer on his food. I sprinkled it on  the food for a week and it stopped. :Pinkbounc

He's 3 months old. I hope it was out of curiosity! He didn't vomit it... but I hope he didn't like it...

:rotfl: :rotfl: Our 15 yr. old dog has been known to do this and I try to keep the kids away from her for weeks on end :rotfl: :rotfl:

They have a medicine you can put in his food so his poop tastes bitter so he won't eat it if it becomes a habit.

Coprophagia is quite common among young dogs. One theory is that the texture of the feces is very much like the first "solid" food that many puppies receive from their mothers.

While it may be rather distasteful for the dog's owners and others sharing the same house it is not harmful to the dog and certainly not a reason to put a dog down. (did I read that right? mouseworshipin put their dog down because it was eating feces, grass and getting sick?)

Most dogs will outgrow this behaviour. Other dogs will respond positively to proper training and the appropriate command "Leave It!" should direct their attention somewhere else.

So glad to read this!

The best way to handle this, so they don't get, ahem, a taste for it (because it can become a habit) is simply not let them get at it. You have to pick up after him right away, and not give him a chance to snack. After the first few months it stops being interesting, and then you don't have to be quite so quick in picking up after him (in the backyard of course--always pick up after him on walks or in the neighborhood :) )

I remember there was this comic who noticed his dog ate poop and he had a nice, shiny, thick coat of hair...whereas the comic did not eat poop and he was bald. Maybe there is something to it?

Ugh- my dog does this- she acts like all found cat poop is a little piece of heaven. Blech! :crazy2:

She doesn't eat her own, though..

This is SO common! My Shih Tzu did it for months and months and now my pound puppy does it. Gross, but common.

A few things to look at. Some dogs do it when they are not getting a good, balanced diet. Others do it for the heck of it ;)

They sell products to put on their food but they're expensive - meat tenderizer is MUCH MUCH cheaper and worked for us with our Shih Tzu. Just sprinkle some on the food of any animal that is using your yard as an outhouse. It makes the poop less tempting =)

Or you could be really good at cleaning up right after. Course, I have one that stands and just waits until the other finishes and quickly snatches it up. Ick. So, we are doing the meat tenderizer again to stop it.

Not to worry, OP. Perfectly, albeit disgustingly, normal. My 2 year old still eats my other dog's poop. Guesss it kinda saves on backyard poop clean up!

Bitter poop vs normal poop. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Just how bad does poop have to taste to keep a pup from eating it. I just never realized it tasted good. My dh is litterally :rotfl2: Sorry I just find this hilarious and we have 3 dogs.

.

My Shih Tzu did this also when she was a puppy. I happened to be in Pet Smart and mentioned it to one of the employees. He suggested changing her diet. I did, and problem solved.

Did you change the diet by simply not serving the poop anymore? :lmao:
