My puppy ate a paper towel!

Nala, my almost 6 month old, 44 pound Lab threw up this morning after I fed her. I noticed that she threw up an entire paper towel (I have NO idea where she got it from!) :scared1: She's thrown up before and the vet just instructed me to feed her chicken and rice soup until the vomiting subsided. I gave her a can of soup and she's kept it down. Think I should take her to the vet just in case?

Thanks in advance!

LOL- those Labs are garbage disposals!!!

Sounds like the paper towel was the problem. Now that she got it out, she'll be fine. Just cruising around for the next inappropriate meal. :)

I would imagine she'll be fine now. My Lab ate things infinitely worse than paper towels and never had any ill effects other than the occasional bout of puking afterward to get rid of the inappropriate meal. :)

I agree. Just watch her to make sure she continues to be okay, and I think you'll be fine. I've got a black Lab who is a year old. He brings a smile to my face every time I look at him - just a big cuddly teddy bear! :goodvibes

if she vomited it up, she should be fine. my basset hound will eat ANYTHING. he's eaten 2 clorox wipes, a few paper towels, a dishtowel and part of an old t-shirt. didn't faze him at all. i keep telling DH he needs more fiber in his diet, lol.

Yuch. I hate when my furbaby throws up. Luckily it does not happen often.

I would not call the vet if your baby is eating normally, and eliminating (both #1 and #2) I wouldn't be too concerned. Of course, I am assuming that the vomiting stopped after the paper towel was thrown up.

Now... I can't imagine feeding a dog canned chicken and rice soup. There is a lot of "extra stuff" in there that I just don't think is healthy for dogs...like the sodium. I am not a vet however. I would probably try just some boiled chicken, and some plain rice.

I have two chesapeake bay retrievers that eat everything. X-rays have shown some strange things. Sounds like she took care of it herself. As long as she is eating and pooping I would not worry.

I would worry about her getting too big. (stepping on the soap box here) Why do so many retriever owners think bigger is better? My husband is always saying my 2 year old chessie is too skinny. He is 80 pounds and right at the breed standard. Vet says he is perfect. But I know so many people who proudly state their dog weighs 120 pounds or more.:scared1: That is just too much for their joints. If you are not sure how big your dog should be look on the AKC website. They have ideal height and weights listed. (stepping off of soapbox now)

When dogs and people vomit or have diarrhea, they loose a lot of sodium, potassium and other elements. It helps to have the extra sodium via the chicken soup, in small reasonable amounts, to make these up. I don't think the vet is implying 3-4 cans per day but to give them one can split up over the day. The rice is good to help bind diarrhea and is very easily digested for the vomiting dog. We have been instructed to use this over our 31+ years of dog ownership having lived in multiple states and multiple pets. Never been told to use this for cats however.

Some dogs are just like goats. Some like to chew, some swallow whole. Our current dog never chewed up anything, really, but has made up for it in other misdeeds. ;)

You should consider keeping the trash up away from him and the bathroom trash as well. Wouldn't you hate if he retched up some type of femine protection on the front lawn??? :rotfl: Sorry, it's late. ;)

In Max's first two years of life, he ate a whole lot of stuff that he shouldn't have. Wrestling toys, a plastic shopping bag, a shingle with a nail stuck through it.

As long as the puppy throws it all back up, it's nothing to worry about.

I'm going to "weigh in" here. I have a golden retriever who is over 100 lbs and according to the vet he is at his ideal weight. He is just a very large boy - tall and long. He can see the top of our kitchen counters and when he lays his head on the dining room table it reachs the middle of the table (which seats 8). So a dog that's over 100 lbs is not always "fat". Now I'm off my soapbox.

Now on to the OP's issue. We got Chewy (yes he was already named) from the Humane Society at the age of 4. He almost went back at the age of 4 and 1/2 :lmao:. He ate anything he could get his mouth on (and remember he's a tall boy so he could get his mouth on alot). If he was alone for any length of time (even 30 seconds) he found something to eat. So just a few things he has eaten - whole rolls of toilet paper, slippers, half a nightgown, a leather sheath to a hunting knife, a whole venison roast (frozen) and the butcher paper it was in, several wash/dish cloths, a plastic water bottle, a whole pizza fresh out of the oven, bars of soap, more napkins and kleenex than I can recount. Now some of this is when he has been with pet sitters and most of it was within the first few months with us as we were trying to figure out how to live with each other. So keep an eye on the puppy, make sure whatever he eats passes and don't hesitate to call the vet with "My dog just ate"...

As I called the vet numerous times with "My dog just ate" They would ask "Is this Chewy?" :lmao:. So far it hasn't been anything that hasn't come out one end or the other and hasn't hurt him any. He is laying at my feet at 12 and a half years old. He has a brain tumor, fatty tumors, and a throat that's becoming paralzed but he is still doing well. And we will do what is needed when the time comes although it will break our hearts. He is just one big snuggle bunny and we have loved him all these years.

This is my first Christmas without my dog ....he loved Christmas he even knew where his stocking was each year. I know this is ot but anyone want to share some pictures of their eating machines?

My last puppy (he's gone now) ate an entire pink bath towel. He had pink poop for a week!! :rotfl2: Didn't seem to bother him at all.

My first year without mine as well. I still have her stocking. I would love to see pics as well.

those labs eat everything!!

my chocolate lab (my first xmas without her too :( ), at 3 or 4 months ate a AAA battery and my sister's yellow lab got into one of those huge bags of dog food while she was gone, ate half the bag. those were some fun vet visits...

sounds like she already got it out of her system, i wouldn't worry too much.

Teddy ate a sock at 4 months, and threw it up. Then he ate another one (a man's dress sock this time) and had to have surgery. He was still recovering when he threw up a kids sock again. Socks are his obsession. He is 6 months now and we are good about keeping the socks picked up...

Nala loves socks too! :lovestruc

Thanks for the advice everyone! Nala seems to be doing just fine! I mixed some of the soup with her dog food and everything stayed down! She's presently at my feet trying to figure out how to eat the hardwood floor!

Here's a picture of Nala taken when we first got her. She's a lot bigger now, but still just as adorable!

Ain't that the truth? My shepherd/lab mix got into the bathroom one day while we were at work. She was about a year old at the time. Now, this is a dog that chewed up FOUR sets of mini-blinds and all the carpet off the ends of the steps. Anyway, while we were out she ate vaseline, diaper cream, toothpaste, some tissues, baby powder, about half a bottle of baby oil, some soap, some shampoo and three of my wife's shoes.

I got home, got her out to the back yard where stuff started coming out of both ends. It got kind of scary when the soap suds started coming out of her mouth. I am on the phone with the vet, asking him if my dog is gonna die, and he tells me to force a turkey baster full of peroxide down her throat to make sure she throws everything up. I thought he was crazy - If I put peroxide down her throat, she wouldn't vomit - she'd explode!!

She got everything up and then stood still while I ran a hose over her. After about five minutes she shook off the water and wanted to play. Dog has an iron stomach. Another time she ate a two-pound box of Whitman Chocolates - THAT time I used the peroxide and, again, she was fine.

She is now fourteen years old, and other than a bit of arthritis and some hearing loss, she is perfectly heathly.

I'm glad your dog was ok, but your post really made me chuckle!:)
