The phone rang and Alyssa had no desire to answer it, so I took the call from Mickey for us to get up. This was when I found out that Paul had already dubbed his favorite attraction. You see, he couldn’t sleep, imagine that, apparently it’s not the same unless the both of us, one side-ways sleeping granddaughter and an over-weight Lab are all crammed into one queen size bed. So he decided to explore the resort at 4:30 in the morning and that’s when he discovered it, his favorite attraction, and the thing he lived for for the rest of the vacation, the coffee/latte/cappuccino/espresso maker in the lounge. If I were a jealous woman, I would have been concerned. Oh, the loving looks that machine received each and every time he went into the lounge.

Paul already having sampled several of all of the concoctions from the machine was very quick to shower and get dressed, I’m a wash and wear type of gal, so the three of us were out of the room in no time at all and had juice and cereal while admiring the castle for the lounge. After a breakfast, we were off to the monorail platform for the short ride to the Magic Kingdom.

Which ride would be Alyssa’s first amusement park ride? Well, Paul had shown her the Disney web site and she stated she wanted to go on Splash Mountain. The one ride with no safety bars, the one ride she could panic on and stand up. You must understand, I have no children of my own, it was 9:30 am and I had already called the vet to check on Bone A. Part, watching other people’s children climb on walls, makes me nervous. Believe me, on several occasions during the trip, Paul had to reassure me that children liked to climb on things, that’s what they do, they climb, they fall, they cry, they climb again. Maybe this is why I was never blessed with children, I couldn’t handle the climbing thing.

The only thing that was going through my head was an image of her panicking during the ride and screaming to get off. So I did what any responsible person would do, I played the “Her Majesty” card and out ranked them – we went on the Winnie The Pooh ride. She came off laughing, Paul was happy because she was happy and I was happy because we didn’t have to call her parents from an emergency room. We then continued to ride all of the rides in Fantasy Land with the exception of Peter Pan’s Flight, which was closed for refurbishment. Yep, Paul got his first dose of It’s A Small World, as the boat rounded the last curve and entered the all white room, Paul announced that he was being creeped out because he felt all of the dolls eyes were watching him.

Alyssa was still insisting that she wanted to ride Splash Mountain, so I made a deal with her, we would ride the Pirates of the Caribbean and if she liked the drop, we would ride Splash Mountain. And as Murphy’s Law would have it, she loved the drop, let’s do it again. Ok fine (with eyebrow’s raised – part of the guy’s rule – when a woman says ok, fine with her eyebrow’s raised – it means she is not happy with want ever you just did or are about to do). But then, as luck would have it, Splash Mountain was having technical difficulties – there is a ride god!!!!! I could save face by offering to get fast passes for a later return. She simply replied with an ok, fine (with raised eyebrows) – oh, she’s good. Off to a nice and relaxing lunch at Cosmic Ray’s until Alyssa announces it’s fast pass time. Darn those pesky pre-school teachers who taught her to tell time.

The ride god must have been taking his afternoon nap because Splash Mountain was once again operating and only six people were a head of us in the fast pass line. First small drop, she screams and laughs, second small drop, she screams and laughs, you know what’s coming next, that’s right, the final and huge drop, she screams, holds up her hands in the air and laughs. That’s correct, I have the picture to prove it. An entire boat filled with adults, each exhibiting their own version of the death grip on the handrail, each face filled with sheer terror, the air filled with their bloodcurdling screams and then an innocent 5 year old with her hands in the air, laughing with pure glee.

Now, I have no problem admitting when I’m wrong, she was fine on the ride, just like she insisted she would be, we called her mom and told her she gave birth to a daredevil. We returned to the room for a much needed nap. On the way, Alyssa stated that she does not nap anymore, of course you don’t, the nap is for your grandfather and I.

However, when we got to the room, mousekeeping was two doors away and quickly approaching our room. Being flexible, we went to the pool instead. Returning to the room after the swim, mousekeeping was not finished so we sat on the patio for a moment, when it happened, Alyssa did the “climbing thing”. There were some small rocks in the grass by the patio, being a child, she climbed on them, Paul instructed her not to climb, but she didn’t listen and she fell and scraped her knee. The look on her face revealed that she knew she was in trouble for not listening to him, so she played the sympathy card and played it well. She burst into tears, limped off the rocks, grasping her knee, crying about the pain – the wound was about one-half of an inch long and was not bleeding. He told her to go to the bathroom and take a bath and soak the wound. In the tub, she discovered not one wound, but a second one, apparently, there was a cut between two of her toes. She placed her foot on the rim of the tube for me to examine the cut that was causing her an enormous amount of pain, I must confess, I couldn’t see a thing, no cut, no redness, no nothing.

This did not set well with the princess; I quickly recanted my diagnoses and declared it to be the biggest gaping wound I had ever seen. Know wonder you’re in pain, it’s huge – this pleased the princess, her embarrassment over the fell was forgotten after all, she had a gaping wound. She milked this gaping wound for the rest of the trip, any time she was tired, she couldn’t walk because of the gaping wound – oh the pain. Paul and I had to try really hard to keep straight faces when watching her limp around on her leg expressing how proud we were of her for enduring the pain for the sake of the trip. Ok, so we were rolling our eyes at her and laughing – the gaping wound became the joke of the trip.

After loosing all of that blood, we insisted that she needed rest and we all took a nap. Waking refreshed, we returned to the Magic Kingdom for dinner at the Crystal Palace. We took the small boat from the resort and were the only ones on board. Our skipper was great, as the boat was approaching the dock; the fireworks from the show in front of the castle went off, so he stated to Alyssa’s amazement, that the fireworks were for her because they always announce the arrival of a princess. She curtseyed to him as we left the boat. All hail, Princess Alyssa from Bratdom.

We had a few minutes before we needed to be at the restaurant, so I ran over to Splash Mountain for fast passes for after dinner. Tigger was the first character to visit the table, followed by Pooh, Eeyor and finally Piglet. Alyssa joined in the parade around the restaurant being escorted by Tigger. She returned to the table announcing that she never wanted to leave this place. Paul echoed her sentiment – yea, I have him hooked on my favorite place.

After dinner we returned to Alyssa’s laughing place and got completely soaked. And Paul had his most embarrassing moment in his life. He accidentally, yes, accidentally, hit Alyssa in the face while getting out of the boat. He was stepping out and she got up too quickly and he hit her with his foot. I thought the gaping wound cry was bad. I’m sure everyone around thought we forced this poor child onto a ride that she was not ready for and she was terrified. How could we be so cruel? Paul told her to please lower her voice because people were thinking that we were abusing her. She stopped crying when her pride was on the line and Paul told her that people thought she was crying because she was afraid of the ride, I’m not afraid, let’s do it again and she smiled. Thank goodness because people were beginning to gather and calls to child protection services were being made.

Paul wanted to buy the picture because Alyssa had her arms in the air and as we approached the counter to purchase the picture, Alyssa questioned the cast member if there was a photo of Paw-Paw kicking her in the face, if so, she wanted one. To Paul’s embarrassment, the cast member asked Alyssa to repeat the question and she happily compiled. All of the cast members at the counter busted out laughing at poor Paul’s expense. The woman waiting on us stated that she’d remember Alyssa for a long time as Paul did his walk of shame out of the shop.

While waiting for Paul and Alyssa to ride Thunder Mountain, I was bitten by a bug, I did not see what it was, but I’m sure it was some hideous creepy creature, with huge fangs. Hey, if Alyssa can have a gaping wound, it can be a hideous creepy creature with huge fangs. This might not be important to some people, but I’m allergic to insect bites, all insect bites and my leg immediately started to swell so we decided to head back to the resort and watch the fireworks from the beach.

Even though her majesty had a swollen leg from the bite; his princess had a gaping leg wound; Paul had a wonderful day. We sat in the swing on the beach at the resort, watched the fireworks and were able to walk right into our room instead of having to fight the exiting crowd of the Magic Kingdom. I guess the commercial is correct; it does not get any better than this. Happy birthday my Prince Charming!
