He's been limping all weekend, won't bear weight on his hind leg, been crying off and on. He's really been in some pain(of course this had to happen on a holiday weekend:rolleyes:) I took him to see the vet today and she immediately could tell he has torn his ACL. :guilty: Poor thing! Minky is over 10 years old and a large breed, so he's more like 77. Not a good candidate for surgery due to his lung disease (yes, it seems we are all diseased around here.) Minky has been on Meloxicam(Mobic) which is an anti-inflammatory, and she's adding Tramadol(like Ultram), a pain reliever. I have to keep him quiet for 3 weeks, which I don't think will be hard given that he doesn't even want to stand up. Poor, poor Minky. He's just a sweetheart.

Awww, he's so cute!!

While I hate when my dogs get older (I also have a 77 y/o), they are just so darned sweet and wonderful as they age. As mine has gotten older, she's just turned into the BEST companion.

I had a dog that tore two ACLs. She was young enough for surgery though. Do they think it will heal?

Tell Minky that Connor and I send our best wishes. We want him to feel better soon.

So THAT is your namesake!!! He is absolutely adorable. I am so sorry he is in pain. :sad1:

Awwww, thank you for posting a picture of Minky. He's so cute. I hope he heals up really soon.

Dawn, I don't think we have seen any updates on Connor lately. How is he adapting to his new home?

awww, poor Minky!

*pets gently*

I hope he heals up quickly.

(and someone needs to get the memo that you have enough to deal with now! If I lived closer to you, I would bring you a casserole!)

Poor baby! I know what I went through with my buddy Shadow and when I see a dog get older it just makes me want to cry that they age so much faster than their owners.

Thinking food thoughts for MINKY.

Minky is such an old gentleman, very mannerly. He's at least half standard poodle(his mother was a purebred who accidently got out right after she was bred to another standard, so the guy couldn't guarantee the puppies. He was so angry he dropped her off at the pound as punishment. Lucky for us a rescue group found her and raised the puppies.) He has a very poodlely personality. The vet thinks that with rest and pain meds that the ACL will heal well enough. We just have to keep him from running around. Not much of a problem though. All he wants to do is just lay around. At least he's not crying now.

 Isn't that the truth? In the past 4 weeks it's been something every 2-3 days! I want my life back!

I know. I was so afraid they'd say he had cancer. Up until 4 days ago he was actually pretty spry for an old dog with some arthritis. He had a bad seizure on July 1 around 11pm and the limping started after that. The vet thinks that the violence of the seizure probably popped that ACL. (he's had seizures for about 6 years, nothing new but it always startles me. I never get used to it.)

Aw ! Poor Minky ...he's a handsome boy tell him Fantasia the leader of our pack ...aka Princess Gray Face (she's 70 !) sends her love and wishes for a quick recovery

How Mama Minky be a dog and run off to have some fun? Serves her right to go to that pound.

Minky is adorable! I hope he feels better soon! Give him an extra little treat tonight for me!

And as for the rest of your family, I really hope everything starts to calm down a bit for you. I'll be thinking about you!

Mama Minkydog, you need a hug and a martini!! Really hope everything settles down for you soon! ACL tears are common in large/giant breeds, and I know a few Newfs ( unfortunately ) who have had them, and not had surgery and made out well. Just keep an eye on him, with the pain meds he won't feel the pain and might try to act like his old self.

Awe - Minky is just a doll!!!

My guy, Riley (almost 84 YO) wishes him the best. Riley believes the best dogs are pound puppies!!! (Well - in his case he was a very mature pound puppy of 56 when we adopted him!)

How is your DD doing with her algebra? Test is tomorrow right??? Here's hoping you will both get some good news from that!!!!!:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

She decided to drop the course June 30. I talked with the teacher and basically she was going to have to make high As on all her last chapter homework AND the final. Considering that she has never made an A of any kind in Algebra, we all thought it was best for her to just drop the course rather than take another F on her GPA. I talked with her guidance counselor(who incidently is a complete fool) and got her to agree to putting her into a special class where she can have the best chance of recovering that credit. I also have requested testing for LD, but was told that they have to do a 12 week "evaluation" first--as if failing Algebra for a FULL YEAR wasn't enough evidence for testing. SHeesh. The guidance counselor wasn't bothered at all that DD is at risk for not graduating on time. :headache: Idiot.

Oh goodness. That sucks. Now she has to do the class AGAIN. I'm so sorry to hear this.
