My poor DS.

Sherri - he's in 5th grade. It is his last year in this elemenatry school. I totally agree about a lottery system and if you get in once then the next time you should not be eligible.

I did send an email to the two teachers that run it and made the suggestion.

DS is handeling it very well. I found out later that another reason he was so upset because a kid in his class made fun of him for not getting in. He saw my DS was upset and was taunting him. Why are kids so mean?

Thanks again everyone for the support. I hope he gets a spot. If not it's a life lesson learned. I'm proud of him :)

That just breaks my heart that kids can be so heartless. To me thats bad sportsmanship and that child should not be able to participate.
Also, I think if your son is going into middle school next year this program might be just the thing to help him come out of his shell. I would probably point that out to the guidance couns.
I just want to add that my son was very shy throughout elementary school as well and once middle school came around he was a different child. Now he is in 9th grade and just continues to pick up steam as far as meeting new people and doing new things.
I hope things work out and your son can get in the program.

Sherri - thank you for the kind words. I'm really hoping someone drops out so he can get in. DS seems to be OK this morning. He said he still sad but he's not showing it.

I know this program would really benefit him coming out of his shell.

I'm glad ds is feeling a little bit better today. I really hope it works out so he can participate.

I'm sorry your son is missing out on an opportunity to help him come out of his shell. As a teacher, I would also think the first come, first on the list rule would cause kids to run and shove to get to the classroom so they made sure they would get on the list. Just something else you might want to mention to the teachers that makes the lottery system seem more logical.

My DS came home from school today with a spot in After School Sports!!!! Yay:cool1: He is just thrilled beyond belief. I didn't push the issue either. I never called the principal. I think someone dropped out so he got in. I do think my calling the teacher directly helped.

Thanks for all the support:banana:

Jennifer- I am so happy for ds. Sometimes things have a way of working out the way they should. I bet he is going to have a blast. I'm really happy for him.

WAAAAAHOOOOOO!!! So glad to hear this. Tell your DS to have fun!

I am thrilled for you DS.

The same thing happened with my DS last year in the fourth grade. He in not athletic so when they sent home a form for a robotics team, I made sure the form was sent back with him the next morning. I got a call later that night saying the class was filled. He was devastated.

He is number 1 on the waiting list but the teacher said almost no one drops out. I'm just so upset because it's so hard for him to join things and this is the only thing he wanted to try.

If there are enough kids on the waiting list (turning in forms after your DS), I wonder if they'd consider running a 2nd group? One of our teachers offered an after school soccer workshop as part of a fundraiser for the school. We got in with the first group fortunately, but there was so much interest in it that he graciously offered to do a 2nd group, which also quickly filled up. He and the kids had so much fun, and I'm sure it was a great fundraiser for the school. :thumbsup2

That is great that your DS got in! :cool1:

And also I think that it is great that you made a positive suggestion (the lottery system) to the school, you never know if they take up something like that you make help another child get in years later to something he/she wants to do!:goodvibes

I have a very shy child that has a hard time joining things - like sports. Well his teacher decided to run a program called "After school sports". My DS was thrilled and wanted to join. He brought the form home we filled it out and he took back this morning. Guess what??

IT WAS ALREADY FILLED!!!! They got the form yesterday and by the time he walked into the classroom this morning it was filled up. My son is a safety and has to stay at the front door until all the kids get into the school so he was last to the classroom.

I called the teacher and he said "Sorry my hands are tied". He felt bad but said there was nothing he can do.

I don't see how that is a fair way to organize it. I'm so mad and sad for my son.

FILLED???? FILLED???? FILLED????? I never heard of that!

Thats terrible, poor kid. I would push it a bit more to get your son in!
Good Luck
