has a severely infected toe. Took her to MedExpress today, and they removed about 1/3 of her toenail and drained it. They had to put 2 shots of lidocaine in her toe to numb it and I had tears in my eyes just watching it. I grabbed her hand and she held on so hard I thought my hand would come off.

But I would do it again in an instant. As irritating as she can be I love her dearly and wouldn't change a thing about her.

Wow, I'm surprised that they did that at a MedExpress clinic! I had the same procedure done last year (except that they also chemically destroyed the root of the nail where they removed it so that it wouldn't grow back) and I had to have a specialist appointment with a podiatrist!

Hope your DD feels better, soon! She'll want to be very careful to keep the toe dry and clean for a at least a week so that it heals properly and doesn't become infected again! I bought a couple rolls of that stretchy surgical tape (it's not adhesive like tape - it only sticks to itself) to cover the whole toe - it makes it so much easier to walk with a big gauzy toe and it will stay on all day without falling off!

That happened to DS18 a couple years ago at band camp. The camp nurse called me to see if she wanted us to take him into the dr. I was thinking "it's an infected toe, how bad can it be?" and we were picking him up later that day. Well, we got up there and OH MY, it was AWFUL. It took about 4 weeks to get it totally cleared up after several rounds of antibiotics, etc.

I hope your DD heals fast.

I hope your DD recovers quickly. If you don't mind me asking, how did something like that happen? I've never heard anything like it? Did something get under the nail or was it moisture that grew something? In a lake lately? Poor girl

In my case, it was stubbing my toe (REALLY HARD!) about a year before, which damaged the nail bed and caused the nail to grow wrong. There was all sorts of extra tissue and pockets of puss (well, you did ask... lol) under the nail on one side, so they had to remove part of the nail to remove the infection.

It's almost always caused by a trauma to start with, because it's awfully hard for infection to get under the nail any other way. In the case of my nail, the nail bed was so damaged that they had to kill it because it would never grow back properly and it would have become a recurring problem.

UGH I'm getting queasy just reading this - I think it deserves a trip to the mall for a reward.

I hate feet things. IT REALLY HURTS when they do anything to your feet!
Hope she's better soon!

Ooh, that sounds pretty awful. Any kind of foot infection can be bad because it's so hard to keep them super clean. Your poor daughter! Christian had a toenail infection early this summer, not as bad as your DDs, but bad enough. We got the infection cleared out but the nail looks milky and weird. It doesn't seem to hurt but I think he's going to end up losing the nail just from the look of it.

I hope your DDs toe heals up easily. Poor kid!

when my daughter was 9 she had to have half her toenail removed because it was infected too....they removed half of it length wise......the 3 shots hurt the most I think.....it got better within a few weeks.......

The lidocaine shots do hurt (mostly because they go in relatively slowly), but it's much better than without.

I had an infected toe (right by the nail) in college. I went to the doctor and he told me the shot would hurt as much as the lancing, so he just went ahead and lanced it without any numbing. :scared1: Yow! It hurt so bad, I immediately burst out sobbing. I was so embarrassed, but he assured me that he'd be crying too, if it were him.

The worst is over. She should heal and be better soon.
