My pets keep me from buying more points.

When my Mom was alive - she and my Dad stayed with our dog Bonnie. Since she died, my Dad travels with us. I hate to admit this but I have more people I would leave my DS 11 with than my dog!!!! LOL

So since then - Bonnie has travelled with us to Disney World and stayed in kennels a couple of times - because there was nothing worse than calling her at a kennel near our home and hearing "she hasn't eaten anything in 2 days". We loved walking her at midnight at Animal Kingdom. We also used a kennel outside of Disney and would visit every other day.

Bonnie is going to be 17 years old in May. She is deaf, but gets around great. We found a kennel about 30 minutes from our house, we will have to pay over $30/day for it - but she stayed there last year and seemed to enjoy it. It's in the woods, and she loves that.

We are grateful for every day with her. Every phase of her life has been a joy.

We boarded our cat, Alanya, once and she was a wreck when she got home- lost over 3 lbs! even our vet has advised not boarding her in the future...

So we pay various friends to come check on her when we're gone more than 3 days - every other day is fine by us and her. If we're gone an entire week we pay $100, which is still less than boarding. Tho we just got a new washer and dryer set that's large enough to wash king comforters... I think if our friends plan to use us as laundry facilities we'll pay a bit less....:rotfl:

We also load up on the disposable litter trays - for which our friends dearly thank us! :thumbsup2

This is a good topic. Though it doesn't prevent us from getting more points it has been preventing us from taking a national park train ride and a couple other cross country trips we want to take because of the length of time needed.

We're getting close though.... we're down from 4 dogs, 2 cats, 3 ducks, 2 rabbits, and 2 children to just 2 dogs. :)

For the first time since we've been married (36 years next week), we are petless. Our kitty (Big Kitty) died last month. Before that we've always had 1-2 cats and 1-2 dogs at any given time. DW and I have discussed it and we've decided not to get any new animals. It is so nice now to just pick up and travel whenever we wish without having to line people up to take care of the pets while we are gone. Plus worrying about what kind of shape we'll find our house in when we get back. We loved our animals, but we also love the freedom of being petless now.

Ah, we went from 2 cats, 1 dog, 3 kids - down to 2 kids! The youngest has 3 years, 3 monts and 3 weeks before graduation, give or take a day. But who's counting anyway?

We have 2 cats either my dad or cleaning lady will come 2x a day.

I know they are lonely....but at least they have each other and are in their
house.

One of the reasons I will NEVER get a dog is because going away becomes
much more difficult, and costly.

My dad has stayed with my dog in the past. Recently we had a place called "The Pet Lodge" open up in my area. Although they do boarding, their main source of revenue seems to be doggie daycare, and we take our dog Austin once a week, and he comes home spent and usually sleeps for a day and a half. The dogs have a big room and outdoor area where they can play all day (check out the camera to view pets) http://www.petlodges.com/index.htm

Our last trip we boarded Austin here, and we can go out and watch him on the webcam. He is exhausted after a week, and although I would still prefer him to be at home with my dad, at least he is not in a cage for 23 hours a day. They are out most of the day. Thankfully, my dad loves Austin and is more than willing to watch him for us, I just did not want to bother him this time.

Your place sounds like ours. Our dog is sooooooo tired for like 2 days when she gets home. This place is adorable. They have tiki huts and this island theme in their play yards. :goodvibes

How are the kennels at WDW? I saw the one at MK when my son lost his cell phone and the lost and found was at the kennel.

We have a new vet that opened about 2 miles from my house. They are great and do boarding. They are trying to build the book of business righ tnow so when we went in Jan it was only 11 a night!! I thought great! I went in and met the staff and I like them. I always see them walking the dogs outside too. for our upcoming trip we will be gone for at least 21 days so I think I might have to figure something else out because I hate to think of him there for that long!! I hate to think of him without someone who loves him that long.

We have 2 BIG dogs (120 and 130 pounds) so we get them professionally boarded. Not too many people are willing to take on 250 pounds of Rottweiler!:lmao: I was lucky to find a dog trainer who does boarding as well. He lives on a huge property and keeps his kennel onsite. He is very comfortable with our big dogs since he used to breed and train Rotties. Now, he breeds and trains German Shepherds for police dog work. I didn't know it, but apparently, some of his dogs have won national championships for their police work. There was even an article in the paper about how one of his dogs was just bought by the LAPD SWAT team. I always wondered why my dogs come home so well-behaved!:) I think I paid about $60 a night (for both) the last time. They take the dogs out on 2 mile nature walks and have indoor play times if the weather is no good. When I picked them up, the owner's mom was there hand-feeding them freshly-cooked beef and rice! As much as I miss them when we travel, I know that they are being well-cared for and receiving a ton of attention.

We have the opposite problem.

We have so many points we cant get a pet!:rotfl:

I just feel like we are gone so much and emotionally it would be hard for the boys and the dog. We definitely would not go so much if we had pets or for so long.

I always say if we could find a family that would be willing to share a pet that would be the best solution. When we did have a dog years ago, he was always a wreck if we left him for more than a few days.

A pet is like family, I always said we would do better having another child because they could stay with us at DVC:rotfl:

That's so funny, because I just told my hubby the opposite... I told him we shouldn't have kids because we can't board them, we have to bring the along! Our dogs enjoy their boarding time. ( I think we got lucky there)

And just in case anyone freaks out, it was only a joke when I said that about kids, I do want some but I'd had a hard day at work with people saying rude things about me weight and me looking preganant.

I hate the whole office gossip/rudeness thing!! Deal with it everyday. Even though we took the kids, the best trips have been just my husband and myself! Enjoy your time with your hubby, once you have the kids, its over!!!:wizard:

Our cat fleabag (nickname only!) is cared for by my mother who comes around at least twice a day. We couldn`t board her as she came from a rescue home and had been there a year and was very very shy. She rules the roost now and I would hate her to lose that confidence.

My cats are both very shy, and one never comes out when anyone is in the house except me. I have one of my sons come by and check the food, water and litter box when I'm gone for 3-4 days, which works out fine. The one time I left them for a week-long trip, the one who never comes out had developed an ear infection so bad that I nearly lost her. Now they get boarded. They hate it, but at least they're looked after. I don't ever want to go through that again.

Maybe DVC needs to open a pet friendly resort. DSis watches ours but next trip our First with DVC she will be with us, So DMom and other DSis will have her.

The dues would probably be awful. I hate to say it, but I wouldn't want them to allow the points from that resort to be used at other resorts. I would hate to be stuck having to stay at a DVC resort that allowed pets. I have a pet, but I have seen what some pets have done to rooms. Not pretty. People already complain about how some guests treat the rooms. I can't imagine what the rooms would start to look like with animals being left in the rooms all day. Just my opinion.

You know when I read that I was thinking that they might open a PET RESORT kennel type place for long term boarding not what they have now at Disney. I didn't read that post correctly. I guess because my kennel is called Happy Tails Pet Resort. I would also not want to stay in a DVC resort that allowed pets. Let me just clarify this right now. :goodvibes I love my dog but not enough to bring her on vacation to a dvc resort. If I lived to where I could drive to Disney and bring her and board her at a cool Disney long term boarding facility ..I might try that. Maybe??:confused3

DVC had better not start allowing pets in rooms. Many people have severe allergies to cats, dogs, and birds. Also we pay dearly for those points. There are choices you have to make in life. Besides being educators, we also raised a large herd of llamas for 16 years. We were very involved with the business and industry. Yes, many of these animals were pets. When we made the decision to retire and spend time in Florida in the winter, our first task was to disperse our llama herd. Was it easy, no. But we worked at it and did find good homes for all the animals. That part brings us peace of mind.

The dues would probably be awful.

If I can feed a the critters at AKV I'm sure the dues could not be that much more. The could also charge an extra point amount for those reserving a room with an animal. It is hard for DD to leave her theraphy dog at home.
