My PC, GF, VWL, BCV, VWL, and SSR vacation…

so glad to hear that the planning session was so wonderful. I'm so looking forward to reading the rest of your trip report, but you need to take some time to rest and relax after this trip.

Once you're feeling better, we'll be waiting.

I have just read this entire post from page one until this page. My eyes are so tired but I couldn't go to bed without finishing it. I can't wait to read the outcome of the dinner or entertainment there and more.

THis sounds like somuch fun to plan.

BTW How many years will you be celebrating?

When I left you last, the Sandman was beckoning. If you look at this photo (click here), you’ll understand why my daughter and I had to keep our date with him. What a gorgeous sight, eh? My family slept soundly that night, ~sigh,~ knowing that Cinderella Castle was just across Seven Seas Lagoon from our room.

When morning broke, I was awoken not by the sound of a telephone call from Mickey Mouse but by the sound of a growling tummy from my daughter. You see, it was 9 AM and she was hungry. She informed me that it was time for me to get up. Who was I to argue with her? So I got myself out of bed, showered, dressed, and decided to take a few room photos while the rest of my family was busy preparing for the day. (Please click here to view my Grand Floridian Dormer Room on-line photo album.)

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Grand Floridian Resort, the complex is comprised of one main building and five lodge buildings: click here for a map. Conch Key is one of the lodge buildings and it’s circled in “yellow” on that map. My family’s resort room was located in that building and its room number was 7425. Our room was found on the fourth floor (click here). To give you an idea of what buildings were in the vicinity, click here to see our room's location in relation to Narcoossee’s Restaurant, and click here to see our room’s location in relation to the Water Taxi Dock.

Our room had a long entrance hallway (click here). (Note: I took that photo from inside the room as I faced its exterior door.) When I turned to the right at the end of that hallway, I saw the main part of the room (click here). Since this room was located on the fourth floor of the Conch Key, it was a dormer room. That meant its ceilings were vaulted, thus giving the room a lot of interest (click here). Here’s another photo that shows the uniqueness of the ceiling: click here.

Our room was larger than normal. Amongst other things, it contained two queen-sized beds (click here), a desk and chair (click here), and a table and chairs (click here). All the furnishings were beautifully appointed and the room really was quite lovely. I honestly believe the Grand Floridian has some of the prettiest resort rooms found anywhere.

Our room also had a daybed (click here). I took a photo of my daughter lying down on the daybed so that you would have an idea of its size (click here). My daughter isn’t quite 5 feet tall just yet, but as you can see, for a small- to average-sized adult, the daybed just might be big enough for them.

There was an armoire in our room and it contained plenty of drawer space (click here). That is, until my husband proceeded to fill it up (being the nice guy that he is, he left me one drawer). The armoire also contained the television (I apologize for not having a photo to share). On top of the armoire sat a Mickey Mouse lamp and a plant, both nice touches to the room decor.

The bathroom area of the room was composed of two parts: the vanity area and the toilet/bathtub area. Here are a few photos of the bathroom area:

The room had a nicely stocked minibar. This minibar was locked by a key since it contained alcohol, a no-no for anyone under the legal drinking age. Inside the locked minibar were all sorts of goodies, as the following photos will attest to:

One of the nice things about having the particular corner room that we had was that it came equipped with two balconies. One balcony faced the Magic Kingdom and the other balcony faced the marina. Here are a few balcony photos:

Our room also came equipped with other non-standard items. For example, we had two pairs of slippers placed next to our nightstand (click here). The only time we have ever had slippers in our room was when we were staying in the main building. There was also a lovely fruit arrangement and some glass bottles of water. I should note that the fruit was replenished daily (click here). I don’t know why we had those items. My guess was that they were just one of those special Grand Floridian touches that pop up unexpectedly from time to time. We were very grateful for them.

Since you folks know that my on-line photo album would not be complete without a few oddball photos, I submit the following:

Once all my oddball photos had been taken, it was time for my family to head out the door.

My family headed down to Gasparilla Grill for a quick bite to eat. It was warm outside but not too warm (that would come later). We chose to dine outside next to the marina (we love dining there). After filling our bellies full of all sorts of yummy breakfast foods, it was time to move on to the themed pool (the Grand Floridian’s newer pool).

On our way to the pool, we walked by the Summerhouse. I could see that it was being set up for some sort of luncheon party, and judging by the decorations, the theme for the party appeared to be lobster / fishing. Everything looked lovely.

I found it amusing that in less than 24 hours time, I had seen two parties being set up at the Summerhouse. When I compared those 24 hours to the prior “X” number of years worth of Walt Disney World vacations where I had seen zero parties being set up, I found it terribly ironic, especially considering my own party was going to begin in approximately seven hours. It was blatantly obvious to me that the Summerhouse was the happening place that weekend. I was lucky I was already on its busy social calendar.

After my family had finished checking out the Summerhouse’s current party setup, it was time to continue on to the swimming pool. My family had a strenuous afternoon of fun in the sun awaiting it.

My daughter, husband, and I wound up playing in the theme pool for a few hours, stopping only long enough for a quick bite to eat poolside (my husband fetched us some soup & sandwiches from Gasparilla Grill). It was hot outside now (mid-90’s in the shade), but we didn’t let the heat bother us because we had a swimming pool to cool us off. Ahhhhhhh…

And speaking of the swimming pool, I should probably mention that I had my newest electronic toy with me that day. Okay, maybe it wasn’t my toy, maybe it was actually my husband’s toy. Strike that. Who am I kidding? It was my toy.

Let me come out of the closet right here and now. I admit it. I am one of those spouses who buys a present for the other spouse that isn’t really targeted for that spouse but rather for herself instead. Guilty as charged. Book me, Dan-o.

As you folks know, I am a high-tech geek. I live for technology. Technology flows through my veins. And if my mother had been thinking when I was born, my middle name would have been “Technology” instead of some girlie name. My husband, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of me. Sure, he knows technology. Heck, he even enjoys it sometimes. However, he doesn’t touch the stuff in his personal life. The two of us are like oil and water in that regard, and it has worked out well in our marriage (he never fights me for the computer, cameras, or camcorder). So what did I buy him for Father’s Day this year? A high-tech gadget, of course. A digital camera with a JIS Class 7 waterproof rating.

Father’s Day was slated to arrive a week or two after we had returned home from vacation. That meant I had to buy my husband something before we went away. I was a little stumped regarding what to get him this year, but one morning I was put out of my misery in the best way imaginable. I was flipping through the cable channels when I stumbled upon QVC. I discovered that their Today’s Special Value was a digital camera. Sure, I already had a few digital cameras and wasn’t in the market for any more. That was, however, until I saw Paul R. (QVC’s resident camera guy) showing a video clip of himself going down a water slide at one of the Walt Disney World resorts. When I saw that video clip, I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

If you read my trip report from last Fall’s vacation, you know that I had brought a watertight camera bag with me on vacation and had used it to videotape my daughter swimming under water in our resort’s swimming pool. I used that watertight bag with both my digital camcorder and my digital camera. My video and photos turned out well for the most part; however, with a bag, you have to be careful that it does not curve over the camera’s lens while filming. If it does, your images will have a fisheye effect. Needless to say, I wound up with some video and photos with that effect. Drats.

I remembered that fact as I listened to the sales pitch for the camera on the QVC cable channel (note: it was a Pentax camera with a QVC item number of E21359; for more information on that camera, click here). Since the camera was JIS Class 7 certified, it didn’t need a watertight camera bag. It could take photos/video underwater at a maximum depth of 3 feet for up to 30 minutes. Hhhhmmm… I marveled at the thought of the photos and video that I could take with that snazzy, little high-tech gadget. I was thrilled at the prospect of using it during my upcoming WDW vacation. And so I did as any geek would do when faced with a temptation too great to resist… I picked up the telephone and placed my order. Then I justified my purchase by convincing myself that it would be my husband’s early Father’s Day present [wink, wink]. And if I was real lucky, maybe, just maybe, he would allow me to use it during our vacation. After my order had been placed, I told my two children about the Father’s Day gift and asked them to keep quiet. Big mistake. Little did I know, as high-tech offspring of a high-tech mother, they were as excited about the new toy as I was.

A few days later, the box from QVC arrived. My husband asked me what was inside it. I stated: “It’s your Father’s Day present and we’re going to take it on vacation with us.” He said, “I know what it is and it’s not for me. It’s for you. It’s a digital camera.” And then he pointed at our daughter. I suddenly found myself shooting daggers with my eyes at the stool pigeon. I couldn’t believe my daughter had betrayed me like that. Off with her head. (Just kidding, I ~think.~) It was at that point in time that my husband informed me that next year’s Mother’s Day present would be a fly fishing rod & reel. I told him that I looked forward to receiving those wonderful gifts. (Note: I am deathly allergic to fish and wouldn’t be caught dead fishing. Actually, if I were caught fishing, I probably would be dead.)

Have I told you folks how much I love my husband and what a good guy he is? Yep, he is. He allowed me to use his Father’s Day present during our vacation (and to this day, it is still in my possession, God love him).

So, there we were at the Grand Floridian’s themed swimming pool. I took the new camera into the pool with me and took some underwater video and photos of my daughter swimming. I wish I could share the video with you; the color, clarity, and sound were wonderful. But since I can’t share the video, I thought I’d at least share a few photographs:

Underwater Photo # 2
Underwater Photo # 3
Underwater Photo # 4
Underwater Photo # 5

I took those photos both below water (underneath the water) and in water (underneath the waterfall and inside the water fountain). The colors turned out beautifully. And not one fisheye photo in the bunch. I should mention that during my photography session, a little boy splashed me. His mother told him, “Be careful! That lady has a camera with her in the pool.” I told the mother that it didn’t matter how much her son splashed me because my camera was waterproof. The look on her face was priceless as I swam away, dragging my camera through the water behind me. Ain’t high-technology grand?

Eventually, it was time to leave the pool and head back up to our resort room. No, I hadn’t filled the new camera's digital memory card (but I tried awfully hard). It was simply time to get ready for the Summerhouse dinner party. Its time had finally arrived.

The time has arrived. The anticipation is great! Keep writing Janet. I can hardly wait.

Janet,

So you don't know why you got the slippers and fruit basket?!
Even I, normally a little slow, had no trouble figuring that out.
Myabe it had something to do with being a thoroughly enjoyable guest, not to mention being the best possible advocate for GF!

The slippers and fruit are nothing compared to the wonderful room they gave you. If there's a better location anywhere at GF, only you would know about it. And thanks for the photos! (Count 'em folks, 73! Each with a caption).

Oh I just love your report – what an inspiration – I have already started dreaming about what I could do for our next two trips!
Two questions:
1. How do I get a hold of the fellow who planned your event? Does he only do GF events?
2. How can I view your photos? It is so tantalizing to have every page almost load and then - nope!

P.S. I loved your ants on a mobius strip - very Douglas Adams.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the drug store, but that's just peanuts to space.

We left the swimming pool and headed towards Conch Key. As we strolled by the Summerhouse, we noticed that another party had taken place there in our absence. The lobster/fishing decorations had been removed and a large arch of balloons was seen floating near the front portion of the patio (the portion closest to the resort and not the beach). Our guess was that some sort of birthday party had taken place there. I envied the birthday person so. What a lovely way to celebrate. The balloons made the area very festive.

Let’s see, last night we had seen a wedding reception at the Summerhouse. This afternoon we had seen some sort of luncheon, followed by a possible birthday party. And now we could see that the Summerhouse was being prepared for our own party. That meant that within a span of 24-hours, four parties would have taken place at the Summerhouse. Yowsa! What a busy location. The place was literally hopping.

Shortly after we had arrived back at our resort room, my family took turns showering and changing into our party clothes. I still wasn’t quite sure which outfit I was going to wear that evening, but within a few minutes had decided to stick with the pink gingham-checked one. Since it was silk, it would be fairly cool to wear, and with the temperature in the low- to mid-90’s, being cool was definitely important to me that night.

Once I was dressed, I made sure that my camera and camcorder batteries were fully charged. I also made sure that I had plenty of mini-DV tapes and flash memory (both SmartMedia and SD) for the party. Even though I had hired a Disney Event Productions’ photographer to take candid photographs throughout the evening, I wanted to make sure that I took some photos and video of my own. An old expression claims that some girls can never be too rich or too thin. But that expression does not pertain to me. No, sir-ee. I find it’s too outdated. A more suitable expression would claim that some girls can never have enough photos or videos. And I wanted them to the Nth-degree. Or as Buzz Lightyear would say, “To infinity and beyond.”

After packing my electronic equipment into my camera bag, I felt I was prepared for whatever the evening held in store for me. I grabbed my daughter and husband by the hand and we headed out the door. It was show time.

AHH
I thought the last post was gona be longer!!
Dying to read how your party went

BUMP

What awesome underwater pictures , Janet. I'm a little confused though it looks like its just a digitial camara, is it also a camcorder??? Thanks again for your wonderful report.

Hey wait a minute! I have spent every spare moment over the last three days reading this thread to hear about the party, and that part is not posted yet????? Janet2K, please, please hurry and get to the party! Thanks for all of the great details and wit, you've helped me get through a couple of tough days.:love2:

I SO want to hear the "rest of the story"

Judy

Another one here who is patiently waiting to hear about your wonderful party!!! You are such a wonderful writer and make us all feel as if we are there with you in your planning and preparation! Can't wait to hear more!!

:sunny:

You guys are too funny! I am so sorry that I have been unable to post details about the Summerhouse dinner party. I actually started working on my write-up over the weekend (and I spent a few hours organizing my photos) but wound up devoting a big chunk of my spare time working on a project for a company whose customer advisory board I sit on (it sounds impressive but it's just another one of those non-paying things that I do out of love – kinda like writing a trip report for the Dis ;) ). Anyhow, I wanted to work on my trip report tonight but instead devoted my free time writing up a report about that company's new product (which is wonderful, by the way, but still has a few bugs to be worked out).

Sorry for having to give you excuses instead of a trip report, but I don't want you people thinking that I'm leaving you high & dry without a valid reason. I promise to work on my Summerhouse dinner party write-up as soon as I can.

As always, thanks for the kind words. They mean a lot to me.

I'm sorry the first couple of underwater photos that I posted weren't the greatest (not the camera's fault). I do have better ones to share but those were taken later on in the trip (I didn't want to get ahead of myself).

Besides taking still photographs, the camera takes moving pictures, a.k.a., video with sound. The video actually is pretty decent. I was definitely pleased with the quality of it. Of course, it's no match for a real digital camcorder, but it can definitely go places where a digital camcorder cannot (for example, underwater).

Like I said, I love high-tech gadgets (as any Jane Bond should). ;)
