My PC, GF, VWL, BCV, VWL, and SSR vacation…

As I mentioned in my prior post, on the evening of the dinner party, my family arrived at the Summerhouse (click here) a few minutes before 6 PM. I wanted to make sure that we were there to greet our guests as they arrived, which would happen anytime between 6:00 PM and 6:30 PM.

As I stood outside the Summerhouse, my fingers were crossed in hopes that all my guests would arrive in time for the official start of the party (6:30 PM). My Grand Floridian Convention Services Cast Member had planned one heck of a start for my dinner party, and it would have broken my heart had my guests missed it.

At about 6:10 PM, Bonzie1 and her husband walked up to us. We hadn’t seen them since our WDW vacations had overlapped by a few days during the previous Halloween. Everyone was excited to see each other again. We posed for a photograph (click here).

Bonzie1 filled me in on the story of the delivery of her surprise picnic basket and dinner invitation. It was a cute story and she seemed genuinely happy to have received the basketful of goodies. She mentioned that the picnic basket had contained a very large red- & white-checkered cloth, various pieces of fruit, French bread baguettes, cheese, two bottles of water, and the dinner invitation. It sounded lovely.

Bonzie1’s husband turned on his camcorder, rewound the tape, and showed me some video footage that he had taken of the picnic basket that afternoon: click here. He even freeze-framed the part that showed the dinner invitation so that he could read it to me: click here. Ain’t technology grand?

As I viewed the image of the dinner invitation on his camcorder, I could see that the font was in Mickey Mouse’s handwriting, just as my Convention Services Cast Member had promised it would be: click here. The invitation stated the following:

To: Bonzie1 & Husband

Please Join Us!

A Disney Picnic At The Grand Floridian
Resort & Spa Is Being Held In Your
Honor

Sunday, May 23rd, 2004
6:30 PM – 9:30 PM

The Summerhouse & Small Beach
At The Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

See Ya Real Soon!

A dinner invitation from the hand of Mickey Mouse. Does it get any better than that? I don’t think so.

After chatting with Bonzie1 and her husband on the sidewalk outside of the Summerhouse for a few minutes, my Convention Services Cast Member approached us and introduced himself to my guests. I thought that was a lovely touch. He then told us that we could enter the Summerhouse patio area. They were ready for us.

As we walked through the entrance to the patio, I could hear music playing in the background. It was upbeat, jazzy music, perfect for the beginning of a party. This music was a part of the technical services’ package that Disney Event Productions was providing for my party.

As we continued walking, Bonzie1’s husband teased my daughter by saying that only asparagus and brussel sprouts were going to be served for dinner. When my daughter spied the condiment/salad table (click here), she stated, “See, I told you there was more to eat!” She had no idea how right she was.

A chef was stationed at our dinner party. He would prepare everyone’s food to order. Can you imagine that? I know that I had a hard time imagining that. Heck, I have a hard time getting my husband to prepare my food to order at home (I don’t cook, my husband does). He usually prepares it his way and I have to eat it. I was thrilled at the thought of someone actually asking me how I wanted my food prepared and then following through by actually preparing it that way. As I glanced at the chef and his grilling station (click here), my stomach began to growl.

I walked over to where our dinner table sat. I noticed that the low wall that sat alongside of it had a few decorative touches of its own: click here. Placed along the top of the wall were several small planters containing plants. There was even one of those planters sitting in the middle of our dinner table, and a couple more sitting at the chef’s grilling station. I was surprised by this little touch. The planters softened the look of the concrete wall and made the dinner area feel a little more intimate. Just another one of those special Disney touches that never ceases to amaze me.

At the dinner table (click here) I placed my daughter’s sweater and my camera bag. The table was round and easily sat ten to twelve people. It also fit perfectly within the patio’s alcove. This area bordered the beach and afforded all who sat there a panoramic view. And what a view it was – the Grand Floridian was on one side and Seven Seas Lagoon was on the other. I couldn’t think of a more perfect place to hold an outdoor dinner party.

As long as you’re looking at that last photo, you can see the lighting that Disney Event Productions had used for the dinner party. When the party first began, as you see in that photo, the lights were turned down so low they appeared to be off. But as the night wore on and the sun began to set, the lights were turned up. I never even noticed when that occurred. That just goes to show you that the things that were supposed to happen in the background, such as lighting, truly happened in the background. That allowed the things that were supposed to happen in the foreground, such as a relaxing dinner party, to truly take center stage.

After I had dropped off my personal items at the dinner table, I decided that I needed something cool to drink. I didn’t need to go far: click here. A bartender and fully-stocked bar were part of the evening’s beverage service (listed on Page 2 of the party’s BEO – boy, I was really beginning to like that document). I normally only drink Pepsi, but since Disney is a Coke company, I decided to drink something a little different. One of my old college sorority drinks sounded good to me. I asked the bartender for a gin & tonic, and he happily obliged me. It definitely whetted my whistle.

Within a few minutes, Floridafam’s family had arrived. Earlier that day her husband had participated in the Florida Half-Ironman Triathlon. That triathlon included a 1.2-mile swim through Bay Lake, a 56-mile bike ride around the Walt Disney World property, and a 13.1-mile run through Disney's Osprey Ridge golf course. He did all that and still had enough energy left over to attend a dinner party. I was impressed. There was no way I was going to complain about my leg that night, no sir-ee. I was definitely gonna keep my mouth shut in the presence of such a fine athlete.

Floridafam’s family was introduced to Bonzie1 and her husband. Bonzie1 and Floridafam had exchanged PM’s on the Dis prior to the vacation so at least they knew each other a little bit, which is always nice.

Shortly after the introductions had been made, Bonzie1 gave everyone a gift. If you remember back to Page 4’s “Showing Signs Of Weakness” post, I mentioned the following:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And so my little charade continued. I sent the following message to Bonzie1. Remember this important point – she wanted to know everyone’s names. (I thought it was because she wanted to be cordial to the other dinner guests. Little did I know that she had an ulterior motive - and you folks thought I was sneaky. Stay tuned.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

They say the ones you need to keep your eye on are the quiet ones. I obviously flunked that section of “SPY 101” during my Jane Bond training. Yes, Bonzie1’s secret gift had gone undetected by me. And so I stood on the patio of the Grand Floridian’s Summerhouse on that glorious Florida evening as she showed me a table containing nine engraved crystal glasses: click here. There was a glass for every guest at my dinner party. I was in shock.

Prior to the vacation, Bonzie1 had done a little sleuthing. She never asked me for the name of my Convention Services Cast Member, but somehow she had found out who he was. She spoke to his assistant, and with his help, she planned her surprise. He hooked her up with the Magic Kingdom’s Crystal Arts store, and when all was said and done, they had engraved nine crystal glasses for the dinner party. The front side of the glass was engraved with the image of Cinderella Castle and Mickey Mouse. Here is a photo of it: click here. The back side of the glass was engraved with everyone’s name. Here is a photo of my particular glass: click here.

As Bonzie1 relayed the story to me, she stated that the store had given her a list of images that could be used on the front side of the glass. She eventually settled on a glass with Cinderella Castle and Mickey Mouse on it, having no idea that Mickey Mouse was slated to attend our dinner party and that a surprise dessert party had been planned that would afford everyone a view of the Wishes fireworks exploding over Cinderella Castle. Since neither of those two surprises had been sprung on Bonzie1 yet, I had to keep quiet regarding how absolutely perfect her gift had been. It was truly kismet, but I was the only one who knew that (with the exception of my Convention Services Cast Member and his assistant, of course).

It goes without saying that everyone absolutely loved their beautiful glasses. What a touching gift from Bonzie1 and her husband. Before I finish this topic, I should mention something that really made me laugh. As Bonzie1 told me the story of how she had planned her surprise, she mentioned that she had asked if the glasses could be delivered to the party. They asked her if she wanted the glasses to be displayed on a separate table. She told them, “Not if it’s going to cost Janet any extra money. I don’t want her to have to pay for another table.” They assured her that it wouldn’t cost anything extra. I got a big kick out of that. How sweet of Bonzie1 to be concerned about me when she had planned such an extravagant gift. What a wonderful friend she is.

Everyone stood on the patio chitchatting together as they enjoyed a refreshing drink: click here. My husband shared a special moment with our daughter: click here. It was a glorious evening and there was a nice breeze coming off the lagoon. The evening truly had started out perfectly – both old and new friends were enjoying themselves. I was pleased.

It was at that point that my Convention Services Cast Member whispered in my ear that Mickey Mouse had already boarded the boat over by Narcoossee’s Restaurant. All I had to do was say the word and Mickey’s boat would begin making its way towards the Summerhouse beach area. I was told that it would take a few minutes for the boat to arrive.

I gave the okay and my Cast Member relayed it to his team. The ball was put in motion and there was no stopping it now. It was fun knowing that the time had finally come for the dinner party to officially begin. Everything was moving along right on schedule.

All I can say is "Wow!" What a kind and generous person you are to put together this magical evening for your friends! I can't wait to hear more!!!!

:sunny:

What a fairy tale! I love this! I enjoy your philosophy of life Janet. You must know my mother, she lives her life the same way.

Can't wait for the next installment~ Cathy

Everyone stood on the patio chatting together. It was 6:30 PM and a glorious evening. There was a nice breeze coming off of Seven Seas Lagoon. Since I had given the okay to my Convention Services Cast Member for Mickey Mouse’s arrival, I knew the surprise guest of honor would be appearing on the water’s horizon (click here) within just a few short minutes. Comfortable with that knowledge, I purposely placed my back towards the lagoon. I didn’t want anyone thinking I was up to something.

My guests continued to chat and I could hear a jazz rendition of “When You Wish Upon A Star” playing in the background. Then I heard something else. It was Bonzie1. She pointed to the lagoon and stated, "That's not who I think it is on that boat, is it?" (click here) Then she asked the children, "Do you think that's Mickey Mouse?" (click here) They looked at the boat and nodded yes. Bonzie1 exclaimed, "Ah-ha, it is!”

I should note that the boat approached the Summerhouse beach area at a faster rate of speed than I thought it would. I didn’t understand why until the next day when I saw the shoreline: click here. The boat needed to make it through the shallow sandbar area (as seen in that photo) all the way up onto the beach in order for Mickey Mouse to disembark into the sand and not into the water. No wonder the Grand Floridian marina folks had done a test run two weeks prior to my party. They wanted to assure that Mickey’s arrival by boat could be safely and successfully done. I love it when the professionals are in control and have worked out in advance all the little details that my mind cannot possibly comprehend.

It was exciting watching the float boat approaching the Summerhouse beach area. And it was just as exciting listening to my guests’ exclamations of amazement regarding what they were viewing. I think Floridafam’s husband found his second wind as he watched the boat speeding towards us.

Mickey’s boat soon beached itself next to the Summerhouse: click here. There were three Cast Members on the boat with Mickey. Mickey waved to us and we waved back: click here. Then I saw two Cast Members carrying a set of portable steps over to the boat. (Again, the details that had been worked out in advance by the professionals were simply amazing.) Once the steps had been put into place, Mickey swung his legs over the front of the boat and down onto the steps. As he stepped onto the beach, a couple of children who had been watching his arrival ran up to him. He said hello to them and then continued on his way (click here) towards the Summerhouse (click here). We anxiously awaited him: click here.

As Mickey stepped onto the patio, he shook hands with my daughter and then planted a big kiss upon her cheek: click here. She loved it (click here). It was absolutely precious. Then Mickey greeted Floridafam’s daughter. She was shy at first but quickly opened up to him. They high-five’d together (click here), or as Floridafam’s son put it, “high-four’ed.” (Her son is just too funny.) Next, Floridafam’s son shook hands with Mickey. It was a simple handshake but you should have seen the huge smile on his face: click here. Again, another precious moment.

Now, I don’t want you thinking only the children were excited about meeting the Big Cheese. No, sir-ee. Mickey began introducing himself to the other children in attendance at the party – the adults: click here. When he finally introduced himself to my husband (click here), I could see just how excited my husband was to finally say hello – it was too cute for words.

I thought I’d stop for a moment to mention that not all of the magic was happening on stage. This photo has become one of my absolute favorites, not for what you see happening in the foreground, but for what you see happening behind the scenes. Take a close look: click here. When the Summerhouse dinner party was going on, I was too caught up in the excitement of Mickey Mouse’s visit to notice much of anything else. Upon my return home from vacation, I reviewed my vacation photos. When I came to that particular photograph, my eyes immediately darted to what was happening in the background – the float boat being shoved off the beach. I don’t know if you can see it, but there are four Cast Members pushing that boat with all their might, my Convention Services Cast Member and my Disney Event Group Cast Member amongst them. As I viewed that photo, I thought to myself just how absolutely precious it was. A party that was flawlessly playing out before my guests' eyes gave not one hint of the hard work and elbow grease that had gone into it. Magic may appear easy to pull off, but I can assure you that it is not, and that is why I adore that photograph.

Once Mickey Mouse had personally greeted everyone, our Disney photographer asked us if we would like pose for some family photographs. He didn’t have to ask anyone twice, we were all anxious to get a few photos taken with Mickey: click here. Isn’t Mickey Mouse just the cutest thing you ever did see? *Sigh*

My daughter had the honors of the first photo. Mickey asked her if he looked okay for the picture and she told him that he did. He then held out his arm for her to take. After a quick kiss to the top of her head, it was time for the photographer to snap their picture: click here. Then it was time for my family’s photograph: click here. Floridafam’s family followed us: click here.

Bonzie1 and her husband’s turn came next. I need to note what a professional Mickey Mouse was. The breeze that was coming off of Seven Seas Lagoon had picked up a little bit and had blown Bonzie1’s hair into her face. Without missing a beat, Mickey Mouse brushed the hair from her face: click here. Once every hair was in place, the following picture was taken: click here. It was, as they say, picture perfect. I should also mention what a flirt Bonzie1 was while she was posing with Mickey Mouse. She actually gave him a kiss on the nose as her husband looked on. I couldn’t believe it. How bold of her! Just like I said, the children weren’t the only ones having fun that evening.

Once all the family portraits had been taken, it was time for a few group shots. What a happy bunch we were:
Group Photo # 1
Group Photo # 2

I need to note how kind and professional our Disney photographer was. He was especially wonderful with the children and got them to smile in the best way. He took many precious photographs that evening. You’ll see a few of them as I continue on with my trip report.

My Convention Services Cast Member asked me if we wanted any photographs taken with the Grand Floridian Resort as the backdrop. What an excellent suggestion. The Grand Floridian Resort had played such a large part of my family’s Walt Disney World vacations over the years that we gladly posed with the resort in the background: click here. I should mention that before that photograph was snapped, Mickey Mouse gave me a kiss on the cheek. Bonzie1, eat your heart out!

Mickey was quite the ham with the children. You can tell he has a lot of practice with both posing for pictures and getting those who pose with him to smile. Even with the children’s faces covered, you can see they’re still smiling: click here. Here’s a couple more photos of the children and Mickey: click here and click here. I particularly love the expressions on the children’s faces in that last photo.

I think Mickey especially enjoyed posing for a photo with all the ladies: click here. And since three of us had met courtesy of the Dis website (http://www.wdwinfo.com/), we couldn’t resist posing for the following photograph: click here.

At one point Mickey asked the photographer if he would take a picture of the children on the swing. The photographer loved the idea (as did I). Mickey led the children to the beach and sat them down on the swing: click here. With the Grand Floridian Resort in the background, the picture turned out beautifully: click here.

Another one of those professional moments actually happened before the photographer snapped those photos. There was a Grand Floridian trolley (golf cart) in the background. The photographer had a Cast Member move it so that it wouldn’t spoil the picture. Again, just another reason why I love working with the professionals.

There were several people on the beach, and after our children’s photos had been taken, they approached Mickey and asked if he would pose for a picture with them on the swing. They stated they were from England and that it was their granddaughter’s fifth birthday. A few of my Cast Members asked me if it was okay if Mickey posed with the family, and of course I said it was. What a thrill for that little girl to have her photo taken with Mickey Mouse on her birthday, and on the beach of the Grand Floridian Resort no less.

When Mickey came back up to the patio, it was time to color with the children. Floridafam had brought coloring books to the party and the children wanted to color for a little bit. Can you imagine what a thrill that must have been for them to have Mickey Mouse coloring with them? And they had his undivided attention for several minutes. I still am in awe when I look at these pictures:
Mickey Coloring # 1
Mickey Coloring # 2
Mickey Coloring # 3

Soon it was time for Mickey Mouse to head back to the Magic Kingdom: click here. There was a parade awaiting him. He bade us all farewell, and his fan club waved good-bye: click here. As he sat down in the Grand Floridian trolley (click here), he turned and gave us a quick wave good-bye: click here. And then he was gone.

How do you top a visit by Mickey Mouse? Can it even be done? I don’t know, but I was about to try.

Meeting the Main Man ( I mean Mouse ) himself!!! I think I would have swooned...

As always, you have topped yourself!!! Quick question, Janet...you mentioned "Mickey asked the children...". Was he talking? Just curious as to what his voice sounded like as the characters don't usually talk.
