My no work, money saving vegetable garden.

I got my seeds. They were 3 packages for $1.00 We still have 18" of snow, but I must have spring fever already.:goodvibes

I'll be planting 2 pk carrots,2 pk yellow beans, 1 pk beets, 2 swiss chard, 2 green beans, and because I use every inch of space, I 'll get some tomato plants too. I wish I had more room for more gardens, I'd love to plant potatoes, and zucchini again.

I haven't read off the posts - but my library has a book "Square Foot Gardening" that is this basic idea with specific instructions, measurements, etc....

DH did several flats of seeds to get them started yesterday. The sunny window in the family room has all of them but one that I brought to work. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and some flowers that I know of.

We also planted 500 bulbs earlier to go with the 300 we did last year. The jury is still out on whether the skunks or the people are winning the battle there.

Thanks, that looks like something that I should try. My sis tried it in a 45 gallon drum, but the yield was very poor. I'm thinking the drum didn't get enough sunlight, but this way, as the potato grows up, it would get light because the boards are not added till the potato is high enough.

Update from last year:

We put in our raised bed. The rabbits ate all of our green bean seedlings. We've never had that trouble before. We also planted tomatos, zucchini and yellow squash. None of them did well at all. My neighbor decided he didn't like how my garden looked so he took it upon himself to give us a few more tomato plants and planted squash and cucumber seeds. His didn't do well either except for the cucumbers. Don't know what happened but we're trying again this year. We're putting up chicken wire to keep out the rabbits but only doing tomatos and squash. Hope it does better or it will be turned into a flower bed.

I know this thread is many years old, but I had to brag.

As you may recall, my garden consists of 2 gardens 8X4 ' each and another 4X4'. In this garden I have 15 huge cabbages, 4 zucchini plants producing well, 7 tomato plants loaded with tomatoes, 6 green pepper plants and green beans, yellow beans, radishes, and swiss chard. However, only one swiss chard plant came up, but it is the biggest swiss chard I've ever seen- far bigger than rhubarb. The other day, one leaf fed 3 of us. I'm loving my garden.

That is awesome!

I love our raised beds. We have a 4x4s with cucumbers, large tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, pole beans, onions, spinach, and corn. I also have herbs in buckets. We have a 2 X 8 with watermelon that has gone wild and is more like a 2 X 30, it is growing out of the fence down the yard lol Because I like math, I have weighed each picking. We have gotten:
Cucumbers 782.26 ounces
yellow squash 223.05 ounces
tomato 102.90 ounces
4 hot pepper
3 tiny green peppers
green beans 9.1 ounces

Our green beans were those cute purple ones that didn't do anything. I yanked them out when they died and planted the corn. A lot of stuff was planted late because this is our first garden and we are winging it. I just hope we don't have a freakish frost early in Oct. I am planting peas in milk jugs tomorrow. I am out of bed space :)

I realize this is very old, but did you successfully do potatoes in a container? Seed potatoes will be in stock in two weeks. I was going to make a chicken wire cage with newspaper to hold the dirt in.

No, I never did try growing potatoes in the container. Life kinda got in the way. :fish:

The yield is phenomanal. I don't have to worry about animals getting into it since it is right by the house.

I laughed. I've had deer standing on my front porch to eat my impatiens. They aren't shy here - they'll go nose to nose with the dog (the old one, the puppy is too active for them).

The neighbors who manage gardens have deer fencing.

That reminds me of the time a neighbour drove by and noticed a horse in our back yard. He could not believe his eyes so he drove down the road at the side of our house to discover a moose in our back yard.

Then there was the time I looked out the window to see a police car drive slowly down our street herding a bear past our place to an arena and bush behind our house. But we do live in town. Not a lot of wildlife.

We put up an eight foot fence because of deer. It won't stop them if they really want in it, but it helps. I had a doe a couple of feet from my watermelon checking things out. I threw a coffee mug at her.

They really are pretty. A few days ago we had five young ones playing in the backyard - it was really fun to watch. But the amount of deer repellent I spray simply to keep hostas is amazing. And I'm not out in the boonies - I'm in a cul de sac suburban neighborhood less than three miles from downtown St. Paul, Minnesota.
