Has turned into a street full of chaos.
My poor 19 year old neighbor put her car up for sale on Craig's list. She did all the things she had read, meet the person at a public place. She arranged to meet him in the mall parking lot.
She signed the papers but the buyer never registered the car.
He then loaded it up with fertilizer and propane tanks and left it on the street in NYC.
We had FBI here all day yesterday questioning the neighborhood about the family and watching the house.
Today we had news reporters everywhere. I had 16 on my front sidewalk at about 7 pm but when I called the police they couldn't do anything since the sidewalk is considered public space. (then why did I have to spend $800 to replace the "public sidewalk" when it started falling apart?)
The poor girl is now in protective custody because people are making death threats. They have said over and over that the family has been investigated and found to have no ties with the persons involved but that doesn't keep the haters away.

That really stinks for your entire neighborhood. Are you able to get out of your driveway with all of the media around?

The situation with the car bomb really is horrible and that poor girl. I didn't realize she was so young. I can't believe she is getting death threats...how sad.

Hopefully things will calm down over the next couple of days.

Sprinklers are our friends, put them all over your yard, pointing towards the side walk : ).

Poor girl !

Unbelievable! I'll just add this to the growing list of reasons never to do business on Craigslist...:sad2:

:lmao:

If they bought it at Carmax would it have been better??? :rolleyes1

I do business DAILY on CL. The problem with sites like eBay and CL is that it's populated with PEOPLE and they're the ones with the issues.

I have never had an issue on CL, but I could. It's like anything dealing with human beings, there are the good and the bad.

Wow, OP. Enjoy your 15 mins of "infamy". At least it made for great posting!!! Interesting story. I'm sure the family will be cleared soon.

The death threats are so ridiculous. Some people just love trying to feel like vigilantes. :rolleyes1

That poor girl. Now that they have the guy- hopefully that misplaced anger will be placed correctly!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it would have been better. I doubt that Carmax would intentionally sell a vehicle that isn't properly registered. They wouldn't be in business if they did.

OP, poor woman. :sad2: What a nightmare for her and her family. I hope life will get back to normal for her and the neighborhood.

OP, sorry to hear about all of this. Since they arrested the guy, the papers in our area are all clearing the family who sold the car, so it looks like it should start to tail off quickly. The media will move on to where this guy supposedly had his residence.

As to the buying and selling of cars, this is, in no way an indictment against Craigslist. The seller did everything properly, and it's not her responsibility, or Craigslist's to make sure the buyer then properly registers the car.

A friend of mine donated their car to one of the Veteran's groups locally. The group obviously then passed the car onto someone else who sold it. At no point did they properly transfer the title after the donation. About 6 months later, the Philadelphia Police called my friend with a litany of parking offenses, since his car was found abandoned somewhere. It took him about 2 months to clear all of it up.

So, this isn't something that JUST happens on Craigslist. I'm sure you can find plenty of Used Car Lots who do some shady title transfers, etc.
