My neighbor just cut off her finger w/the lawn mower!

make much difference whether or not the mower unit is actually running or not. If something is caught or wrapped around the blade, like some twine or a vine, simply releasing it can cause the compression that the motor has built up to start the motor. Always dis-connect the spark plug wire first before reaching or even using a tool to clear the obstruction. Just remembering to do that will also prevent you from reaching under the mower while its running also.

That's terrible. A family friend was cutting a piece of lumber with a table saw. He looked the other way for a second and he sawed off his middle finger. Unfortunately they couldn't reattach it. Hopefully you neighbor got medical attention quickly enough for them to reattach her's.

This is so sad, my thoughts are with her.

I have a safety lawnmower. You need to pull the bar up for the blade to move. I mow the lawn frequently and wouldn't use any other kind of mower. I'm petrified of anything that can cut, mar or mangle. It's worth the extra money to purchase power tools with extra safety features.

I guess I should add use the safety features.

thats would be so gross, picking up a finger and puting it in ice - and what about the Bobic case

Your poor neighbor. I hope they were able to reattach.

When my brother was about 4-5, he ran infront of my father on the sit down lawnmower and had 4 of his toes cut off. They were able to reattach 3 out of the 4 toes. He has had trouble with that foot ever since. Strangely enough, about 10-12 yrs ago he had an accident with a fork lift and lost several toes off the other foot. They were able to reattach all but 1 toe. Now he only has 4 toes on each foot.

First story I heard today was about the rock climber in Utah who cut off his arm after trying, for several days, to remove a 800 lb. boulder that fell on it (he was subsequently rescued and is in fair condition).

Now this.

No wonder I'm dizzy and feeling like I'm about to hit the floor!!!

Hope the neighbor's situation turns out well - keep us posted!

As for the safety bar, my hubby has a "tie-wrap" he uses on the handle to tie the bar down...I should probably remind him this isn't such a good idea. If the stupid bar wasn't so tough to hold down, maybe he wouldn't do that.
