My mom is a librarian and reading teacher at a junior high and just bought 12 Kindles for her school! It's a really little country school, but she got a technology grant that allowed her to purchase them, and 50 books for them.

Kids get to check them out from the library. She said it's been great, because it makes kids more interested in reading, plus they'll read longer books because they don't notice how "big" the book is when it's electronic.

:thumbsup2 I have heard great things about the Kindle. Plus, a TON of classics are free at Amazon. I have the free version on my Itouch and enjoy it. Thanks for sharing. :)

Good for her! I think reading is an activity that has seen lots of declines among kids these days since they have so many other things that are more appealing. Putting the book on an electronic device makes the whole experience 'cool' again.

Very cool...my BIL's wife is a teacher and when she added mp3 players for talking books for the kids to read along with their reading program, it exploded and the kids who were having issues found their reading levels increased quickly. I can't imagine how much more popular these Kindles will be! Kids respond to technology, that's for sure. Again, very cool!

I'm worried for her getting them back. Do the parents have to sign something that they will be responsible for paying for it? Some kids in my class check out a book on the first visit to the library and then can't get anything else all year because they never bring it back.

Leah, That is so cool. Congratulations to your mother.

Yes, they are only allowed to take it home if they and their parents sign a release and a liability form. Otherwise, they can just use it during the school day. She's had 2 that Amazon's already had to replace... :)
