My Magical Journey to Running the Half Marathon TR Link! p.107

Hi Carissa! Sounds like the training is going great to me! :thumbsup2 I think registering for a race to give you a training goal is a GREAT idea! I think I'll share that idea with my DH. :rolleyes1 He starts working out and/or running and then it just fizzles out.

Poor Baxter... but so cute!

Can't wait to hear your trip itinerary! popcorn::

I am feeling so much stronger as a runner these days! It feels good to be able to maintain a 5 mph pace. :thumbsup2 What is the longest distance you have run before? Good luck with your training! Any chance you'll do a PTR for the trip?

I think the longest I've ever run contiuously is a 5K. The longest race I've ever completed is a half marathon. The longest "run" I ever did in training was 11 miles. 26 miles seems like a really long ways:scared1: I probably won't to a PTR because I can only manage to keep one thread going at a time. Still trying to finish up my June trip report and then I'll have my October trip report. By the time I finish that it will be time for my January trip. Such a rough life I live:laughing:

I think you should go for the 'other' 1/2 marathon... maybe it can be used as a training run for the 'main' 1/2 marathon?

Congrats on beating your 4 mile time!!!! :woohoo::woohoo:

BTW... your puppy doesn't look too happy in that pic! :sad2: :rotfl:

I suggest it to anyone starting out running. It really has been a huge motivator for me! :thumbsup2

I'm sure you'll do great. You can keep me posted on your training right here on my PTR then. :thumbsup2

The other half-marathon I was thinking of doing would actually be AFTER the WDW half. I was planning on signing up for it so that I would be motivated to continue with the running even after completing the half at WDW.

So, I said the Outer Banks Half was out of the question due to Chuck's schedule. But, I did find out there is the Shamrock races here in Virginia Beach in March. :thumbsup2 I can do a half-marathon or an 8k. I will think about it a bit more before I sign up.

Speaking of Virginia Beach...

I'm a little nervous at the moment as I watch Earl barreling towards the coast. We are only about an hour and a half away from the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Most seem to think we'll be fine and only experience tropical storm winds. My main concern is flooding. We do live in a flood zone. I figure tomorrow morning when I wake up we'll have a much better idea of how badly we're going to get hit by this monstrous category 4 storm. Fingers crossed it stays to the east!

And my thoughts will be with everyone along the east coast the next few days as this thing unfolds. :grouphug:

Thoughts and prayers to all who will be affected to whatever degree. I sure hope you are able to escape being flooded, Carissa.

Stay safe, Carissa, and make sure you follow whatever the authorities decide. Every time there is a hurricane headed towards the coast, I remember what it was like when Hugo hit Charleston in September of 1989 -- it brings all those memories racing back.

Are the ships pulling out to sea? Will Chuck have to go? I remember my dad was able to stay since he had a family. I don't know how things are done these days.

Thoughts and prayers headed your way! :goodvibes

Thanks MeMom :)

I hope you're safe from the storm!!!

Thanks Amanda :goodvibes

I hope you and your family stay safe. I will be thinking of you.

Thank you!

What worries is me is if we wake up tomorrow and see we'll be getting more of a direct hit, it'll be kind of late for evacuations. Such a largely populated area to try and evacuate last minute.

Chuck's ship was actually out this week and just got in tonight (not home yet but should be soon). It doesn't sound like they think it's going to be too bad here since the ships aren't heading out. If they do have to, Chuck will have to go along. And, of course, that makes the situation so much worse having to deal with everything by myself. But, hopefully that won't be the case. :thumbsup2

Be safe Carissa. I hope you don't get more than a little rain and a breeze. :goodvibes

We should be on the far Western edge of the storm. We have a tropical storm watch now and to the east is a hurricane watch. It could get ugly for both of us if 'he' tracks further west. Although if we get flooded, I would need to break out my arc since we live on a hill and are about 700 feet above sea level. :rotfl2:

Thanks Melissa. Are you and Jonas still thinking of doing the half?

My heel pain has never gone away, so I decided against it. I have started trying to walk with a little bit of a run, just for exercise.

I've been thinking of you this week and these storms. Like someone else posted, just follow what the authorities say. Have you ever been through one?

And you can handle a little evacuation. We were in SC when Floyd was heading our way, Jonas was overseas. I packed up Jacob, who was 1, the two dogs, photos, and the important papers and drove to Charlotte. It ended up turning away.

The thing that freaked me out was the procedures on base. All the street signs were removed. Hearing all those F16's and A10 take off and "get out of dodge" freaked me out.

Do you have a flood policy on your belongings? Mine's due for renewal, looking at 3 storms in the ocean again, guess I need to make sure to make that payment.

You guys stay safe!

I went through Hurricane Gloria in Maine back in 1985, but we didn't get too much. Looks like we should only get tropical storm effects from Earl here in VA Beach. It just makes me nervous because we're all relying on it turning east. Anything could happen at the last minute. No, we do not have flood insurance.

I would look into it and see? Just my thoughts. Won't help right now with the 30 day waiting period. We aren't in a flood zone, but still have it. Just about 2 miles from us are 13 foot signs showing us where the level of water would be if we did get hit. There is a hill between us and that sign, but still very scary.

We are considered to be in a flood zone according to the map, but I would find it unlikely that we would have bad flooding where we live. We didn't have any flooding in our development when "N'orIda" came through last November. But, I'll definitely look into it.

Just checking in to see how things are going with you and your guys. :)

Hey MeMom!

Things here are good. I've been fighting a cold for the last week and a half so I haven't done as much running as I would like. But, I'm moving along. Hoping to do 5 miles this coming weekend.

We are getting ready to head to Maine for a couple of weeks to visit my family and friends. Chuck and I are going to take three nights away alone while my parents watch the boys and the dog (and the tortoise) so we're very much looking forward to that.

Needless to say, I won't be around much! Once we get back from our trip I will post a big update. :thumbsup2

Hey!
You get such great advice on your pre-trip, concerning your running.

Thanks for sharing your homecoming pictures with your dh.

Hope it was warm in Maine.

I met one of my goals, I walked the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day.
5 miles and we did it in one hour and 18 minutes.

You should do the tri-athalon with me. Danskin has one in Wisconsin, but I want to do it at WDW.
