My Magical Journey to Running the Half Marathon TR Link! p.107

Thanks for the advice and support! :shamrock:

I didn't give you any advice - you were good to go! But, you're welcome for the support.

Great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Cynthia!

Way to Go Carissa! I bet it feels so good to accomplish a goal like that!:banana:

Beautiful flowers. :goodvibes What a special guy you have!

Thanks Missy - and yes it does. :) There's a new virtual 5K scheduled for next month (thanks to Liz) and I'm excited to beat my time.

Morning, Carissa! Just hopping over to say I'm glad you are feeling so good! To me it looks like your keeping up really well with your schedule and what was once so hard, isn't so much anymore!! Love that!

Hello Liesa! It is definitely feeling easier most days, but I'm sure there will be hard days thrown in there. But, I'm feeling really positive about it all right now. :goodvibes

Argh!!! I just typed up a fairly long update and when I hit submit, it brought me to a page saying I wasn't logged in. Totally lost everything. :sad2: It'll have to wait until later.

The DIS keeps logging me out too. It used to be I could just stay signed in and then come back...now I have to log in each time I come. Annoying!

Looking forward to your next update when you have time! :goodvibes

I'm glad to know it's not just me! I thought maybe something was up with my computer.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and perhaps a long weekend for some of you. Ours was a quiet one spent watching the Olympics.

I know some of you are dealing with lots of snow and/or cold and dreaming about warmer weather like I am. I thought I’d post this picture of the lilies that are opening up on my bouquet to bring a feeling of spring to us all. :flower3:

Speaking of spring, the next virtual 5K has been planned for the middle of March by our very own Liz! :cheer2:

Isn’t that the cutest name? :goodvibes

I am really wanting to do some Disney trip planning and feel that I deserve it. I’m considering doing two different itineraries – one for a couple’s trip and one for a solo trip. Look for some trip planning installments very soon. :thumbsup2

~ W4D1 ~

Today was my first attempt at week four of the program. This is what week four looks like:

5 minute warm up
3 minute jog
90 second walk
5 minute jog
2 minute walk
3 minute jog
90 second walk
5 minute jog
5 minute cool down

I was able to complete the first two run intervals for a total of 8 minutes with only a 90 second break in between. :cool1: I only did 2 minutes out of the second 3 minute jog and then only 3 out of the last 5 minute jog. But, I'm very happy with that. There was quite a jump in running this week and this was only my first day. If I can complete all of the run intervals by the 3rd day, I'll be stoked.

You might remember I was complaining of some pain/burning/discomfort in my feet and ankles during that first week. All of that is gone now. My breathing seems to be improving too. The main reason I couldn’t complete all of the intervals today is because my legs got very tired and felt very heavy after that first five minute run. I’ve been feeling some twinges in my right knee after the 5K run. Just something to keep an eye on. Bad knees seem to be something that runs in my family. My dad had surgery on his many years ago and my younger brother, who did the C25K program last summer, has been having some problems with his knees. Fingers crossed this isn’t a pattern that will repeat itself with me!

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

~ World Health Organization, 1948

My totals for today:

Speed: 3.5 for warm up, 4.0 for jogs/3.3 - for brisk walks, 3.5 cool down
Duration: 30 minutes
Distance: 1.85 miles

You have just described me!

Between the knee surgery and this long crazy winter, I have not been able to get out and walk, so I have packed on the poundage. There's no way I could run, but as soon as we get a pretty day, I am out of here! I can't get motivated to walk indoors, and I don't have a treadmill. I do well when I can walk outside and with a friend, so we're just talking and enjoying the walk. I hope to lose a good chunk of this winter weight before our summer trip.

I hear you.. I got really sick in November and was off work for some time where I gained a lot of weight becuase i was doing nothing ALL DAY but trying to get my health back... then came December.. oh those home made perogies were delicious!

There's no way I can run more than a good minute... but I have faith i'll be able to do!! It's so nice to meet people who are similar situation!!
:welcome: Raecheal! Glad to have you join us. Good luck on starting the program. You can do it! Feel free to stop in here and share your progress. Everyone will help root you on. :thumbsup2

Thank you for th

I think you deserve some WDW planning. Planning for solo just incase your Dh can't make it? Great update, those are some great totals. I haven't started yet, just a lot on my mind with this MRI tomorrow as soon as it's over. I"m on it tho.

What is this 'virtual 5k' think? (if you don't mind me asking)

Sounds like you are doing great! I love the flowers, they were so pretty.

You mentioned the snowstorm in Virginia Beach! I was there, and it was so cool to see kids slide with boogie boards! haha :)

You're doing fabulously!! When I start this, probably in April, I plan to take as many times as necessary to get whatever day I'm on's running to where it's supposed to be. If it takes a week to get there, then so be it. I really believe that not everyone is going to be able to make the same progress in the same amount of time. Better to take it slow than blow something out because of trying to rush it. That would completely defeat the purpose.

Slow and stead wins the race! :thumbsup2

Yes, we're not sure if my husband will be able to take leave for the trip. So I will plan a trip for both scenarios.

Virtual 5Ks are races over on the W.I.S.H. events board. We all do them on our own and then report back with our times. It's just a fun way to keep us motivated. If you click on the graphic in my signature it'll take you to the thread for the race.

Hey Megan! :welcome: Thanks for stopping by. :)

I never even thoguht of letting the boys use their boogie boards! We don't have any hills around here anyway, but I hadn't thought of that.

Thanks Liesa. We should all take it at our own pace for sure. I know my speed is much slower than most (even those beginning the program), but that's okay. Once I have my endurance up, I can go faster. :thumbsup2

:cheer2: Great job on W4D1. You are smart to not push yourself too much too quickly. That usually leads to a couple of things. Burn out and injury. The main cause of injury in runners is ramping up the miles too fast. A general rule is to never increase your miles more than 10% a week. Just something to remember as you get further in your training. Love the flowers. I so wish it was spring time. Feels like it will never come!

Thanks Jenny - I read that in John's books. :thumbsup2

I'm sure it feels that way with all of the snow on the ground! That's how it always felt in Maine, but up there it's not unheard of to get snow in April/May. :sad2:

Oh that lily is gorgeous! Great picture of it too..I almost leaned up to my monitor to smell it! :)

I can't wait to read about your itineraries!

I hope the knee twinge is nothing...I don't want you to end up like me with a few injuries under your belt in your first year of running!

Hi Carissa,
Looks your training is going great! Sorry about the knee twinges, hoping it's nothing. I don't think I can run for 3 minutes without being winded. Those lilies are beautiful BTW.

 Hi Carissa,

just stopping in to say HI and shout out for great job...keep it up!

love the flowers....so sweet

and the Wii Hula....oh yeah ;)

Hey Carissa! Just wanted to pop in and say hello! Looks like you are doing great!:thumbsup2 Sorry about the knee twinges but you did a great job with the Valentine's Virtual 5K! I didn't know anything about the virtual runs until you posted it, thanks for that! It's nice to be accountable to someone or something other than my lazy inner-self. "Can't walk cuz I have to post on Dis!" And since Liz did a great job with the Luck of the IWISH (so cute!), I'll have to do that one too!

Hey Car!

I did W1D1 on the C25K today. It wasn't much of a challenge so I must not be too bad off. :rotfl: I'm thinking of signing back on with Weight Watchers. I had success with them a few years ago when I followed their program online so hopefully it will work again and I will stick with it this time. I only have four months until I go out to see my dad for two weeks of mountain hiking. :scared1: Hopefully I will be in better shape than I was last year so I don't hold everybody up as much.

HOORAY Carissa! I am so far behind but I wanted to post and let you know that I read about your virtual 5K...AWESOME!!! You are doing it girlfriend!!!! Your flowers from Chuck are beautiful...maybe Bryan should join the Navy and be sent out to sea and THEN maybe I could get some flowers!:rolleyes1 Anyway, I just wanted to let you know I am proud of you ...keep up the good work!:thumbsup2

One itinerary coming up!

I can't run for 3 minutes without being winded either! But, there's a difference between being winded and gasping for air. ;) Thanks Nichole!

The hula hooping is fun - just a killer. My copy of EA Sports Active finally arrived today so I'll be trying it on Friday.

If you've been running some already then that should help you with the program. And taking up running should definitely help with stamina in the mountain climbing. I want to go with you!!!! ;)

Great job yesterday and on scheduling the next virtual 5K!

Thanks C!
