Im super excited ! After vacationing in Florida and loving it for so long. I finally decided that we need to just move down there and be happy. My kids are all for it . We live in new york city and have section 8 and once you leave nyc with section 8 , you cannot return. They don't take out of state vouchers so once I switch and port my voucher to Florida , that's it! No turning back...

I had no idea where to post this thread btw.

Our quality of life is going to improve so much in Florida. It's no secret that section 8 apartments in nyc are the lowest of the low. Not only is it beyond cramped, conditions at 97% of the apartments are terrible.

I live in a ground floor apartment and I dont even have the space to rattle off the conditions of this place. There is not even fresh air circulating in my apartment ! I have been weighing the pros and cons of moving for so long now and i think the pros are outweighing the cons.

We only qualify for a 2 bedroom here in nyc. In Florida im pretty sure we would qualify for a 3 bedroom . My daughter will finally have her own room and she wants it Frozen themed.

What is helping me make my decision is reality... Im stuck here. If I choose to stay in NYC . Im stuck in this run down apartment . There is literally zero section 8 apartments available that is not worse than what I'm already in . I've spoken to my neighbors and they were not able to get transferred out of their apartments eithier. They are encouraging people with section 8 to move out of new york city.

So why should I stay ?

My kids are disabled and I work part time while they are in school because im not crazy about the childcare options and I like being home with my kids after school so working part time works for our family.

I saved up $3000 for the move so far.

I phoned the county in Florida I would like to move to and they are accepting out of state vouchers. I have not offically sent my papers in because like I said I was debating the move. Im trying to think and be realistic. Rent in nyc for the crappiest apartment are $2000 plus easily. My disgusting trap apartment is $2867 a month. If I don't move... not only will we always be stuck in this cesspool but I will never be able to get off assistance because I will always need section 8 because even if I worked full time. I wouldn't bring home more than $650 every two weeks .

We are only going to be 30 minutes away from Mickey ! My kids are so excited. Not only will we have more space, we'll have an apartment with FRESH air and i can sign them up for activities...and no more harsh winters...and Ill finally be able to own a car! Can you believe in NYC they gave me a quote of $721 a MONTH for car insurance ?!

My family is upset with me because I'm moving so far away but I want more than this for my kids . I want my kids to have a nice place to live . I want my kids to enjoy the atmosphere of Florida. Everyone is so friendly compared the harshness we experience here in the city.

My mother is recently retired and she knows I plan on moving and......I am SO excited and relieved to know that she's coming with me!! She said she is going to move to Florida with me ! She's getting her own apartment in a 55 plus development. The one we chose is GORGEOUS . She is paying $1100 a month for rent in NJ and her new place is $750 a month .

My mom deciding to move with me was the straw that broke the camel's back for my family. They really hate me now . They want all of us to stay up here for the rest of our lives. My aunt is not talking to me anymore and my brother is angry because they say im taking my mom away from them as well and our family is already so small that I shouldn't just take off with my mom and leave.

When me and my mom leave the only people left here is my aunt and her husband and two boys , my brother and my grandparents. That's it.

My mom is looking forward to the move . She told me she always wanted to move out of state but never did because she didnt want to leave her parents . I feel the same way. I didn't want to leave my mom. My mom has cancer. I dont know how long she has. Nobody knows. She is taking oral chemo meds that her oncologist says should work well for her for atleast the next seven years. Her cancer numbers are almost non detectable. It's only a matter of time before she relaspes again. She told me she wants to lounge by the pool everyday and get an annual pass to the waterparks and enjoy herself. She's retired she should enjoy herself ! I plan on getting passes for my children too and we will all be together.

I have applied for two housekeeping jobs so far. One seems very promising . I was told that when I move just come in for the interview .

I have been on the phone with a realtor im paying and she emailed me apartment listings that blows me away....these are the type of apartments you could never get in nyc unless you're stinking rich!! LOL...

I found a nice updated apartment ...it has a beautiful kitchen with stainless steel appliances and a DISHWASHER!!! A dishwasher is lifechanging for me ... You cannot install a dishwasher in these apartments..it's forbidden ..It has a small playground and a pool in the complex as well! My kids are going to flip out being able to go swimming everyday If i allow them. The pictures are beautiful. It looks like a lovely complex. The realtor told me it's near a good school and the neighborhood is safe.

I cant believe I finally decided to move to Disney World!! I have $800 in disney giftcards saved up. They were all free . I earned them through swagbucks . I plan on surprising my kids and my mom with disney silver passes after our big move.

I am charged up and ready to go ....I plan on submitting my transfer papers in two weeks. I am hoping my family will not convince my mom not to move. I don't think my mom will like living without her grandbabies. When she was in the hospital , the only thing that made her feel better was having my kids visit and give her hugs and kisses . Im pretty sure she's going to follow me when I leave. My aunt told me Im selfish to take my mom away from her oncologist and her friends and family she has up here .

How am I selfish? It's not like they dont have cancer doctors in Florida and I hope my mom meets new friends down there and is happy. I dont appreciate the guilt trip being placed upon me.

Im sorry my post is so long. Im very excited to move to Florida.

Well, welcome to the Dis. Good luck to you in your move and your journey on the Dis. :scared::rolleyes:

I would hope your going to be in a good area in Orlando / Kissimmee. Some aren't so great. Jobs will probably be easy to find depending where you will be living. Have you thought about checking what schools your kids would be going to and what they have to offer ? $3,000 is alot of money and I would think you could move to a better place in NY if you wanted to. You also need money for a moving truck ,gas, meals, electric deposit, water deposit etc. My son is now 22 but Autistic. We lived in Orlando for a while and the one school was crap the other was better. There are huge waiting list for services here for them. Medwaiver has a 10 year waiting list and here section 8 won't even out you on a list ,but I am in another county in South Fl. Try and make a list of everything you need to know before you decide to really go through this . I don't want to sound like a downer but I don't want you to get here and think it will all be Disney and be blindsided when things aren't as they seem outside of Disney. Just some things to think about. Having Special Needs kids is hard. Respite here is difficult to get especially if you want a good caring person. The electric deposit is about $500 . The water around another $100. Just to give you an idea. If you have question I will be glad to help if I can

I have been on the phone with a realtor im paying and she emailed me apartment listings

Why are you paying a realtor to email you listings? If you want to save $$ you could definitely do this on your own.

The realtor told me it's near a good school and the neighborhood is safe.

I would check into the schools personally instead of taking the realtor's word for it. Research as much as you can before moving so far away.

Also, just a suggestion so take it with a grain of salt, my priority would not to purchase Disney Silver passes after a big move. Especially since you haven't secured a job yet. Like the PP said 3K isn't a lot of $$ and you may not secure a job as fast as you think. Just plan for worse case scenarios. Those are $400 a pop and you may need that money for moving/relocation expenses.

LOL Good luck.

Im here to answer some questions being asked. Am I a previous poster? Does it matter? Seriously....who cares . I haven't posted on disboards since 2012. I don't even remember my old username that's how long ago it was.

A dishwasher is absolutely life changing for me!!! I hate, hate, hate washing dishes...that's the one chore I truly despise doing more than anything else. I'd rather clean the toilet than scrub a sink full of dishes. It may not be a big deal to you but to me it's a very big deal .

My rent is $2867 a month . I pay a portion of that. A small portion of that. That is not unusual at all for NYC when you have section 8 and that's the maximum for the voucher. The landlords want the maximum. If you do not have section 8 you're still looking at $2000 plus dollars a month rent ....with separate utilities to boot and do you think $2000 gets you somewhere nice ....think again and think again hard . I've apartment hunted for months and saw the worst slums for a high price.

I saw suggestions telling me to move somewhere else in ny... Searching for another section 8 apartment in nyc is futile. It will be another slum. They are extremely hard to find. If you go on Craig's list and other realtor related sites specializing in section 8 you will not find any listings for Brooklyn. I found my place by going to the housing office directly and asking for a list . They told me and others to simply take our vouchers and move out of new york city.

I finally found a decent apartment and lo and behold...infested with mice and rats. The landlord said buy a cat and never did diddly squat for the problem.

I know moving is a big expense. Im not taking any of my furniture with me . Im only taking our clothes and our electronics . That's it. No moving truck needed.

Im not choosing any place that I will have to pay for water . If I can find a place with all utilities included that would be awesome. Im going to continue to look for the perfect apartment with the realtor I hired. Im also pretty sure I qualify for some type of utility assistance.

I have free gift cards obviously im not shelling out $1200 for passes . By the time we move I will have atleast another $200 from the free apps.

My children get ssi . I work part time for fun .

Once we move I plan on finding another part time job and im signing up for college . I want to be a social worker. We will be able to survive between ssi and my part time job . I also qualify for financial aid so that's more money I can use to maintain our household until I finish school and I can get a fulltime job doing social work.

I just did a quick check ...because I have section 8 my rental deposit will not be more than $800 and likely to be much much lower depending on where I choose to move in Florida. We also qualify for utility assistance based on our income.

Im going to save up another $1000 before we move. I plan to buy furniture at second hand stores or thrift shops. My mom got gorgeous and expensive furniture for next to nothing shopping at second hand stores .

I know that up to last year, there was a serious backlog in Section 8 openings in the Orlando area. Neighbors had relatives living with them who had been waiting for over a year for an apartment. I would think that Florida would fill any available vacancies with Floridians who had been on a waiting list before they'd fill an out-of-state applicant. I'd like to think that would be the procedure.

I honestly don't know anything about that because im not moving to Orlando . Were moving to a surrounding county. I called the specific county im looking to move and asked them if they were absorbing out of state vouchers and I was told yes we are and to submit my transfer papers to my local housing authority. I than asked how long would the process take to be accepted/ begin looking for housing and I was told approximately 6 weeks.

Me and my mom are willing to be up to an hour away from Orlando .
