I, like many others, received a Kindle for Christmas. I didn't know if I would want one, but I ended up LOVING it. I spent all day yesterday reading a great chick-lit type book, and then all of a sudden the display just stopped working correctly. It looked almost as though there was a crack in the screen, although there wasn't a visible crack.

I called Amazon, and explained the problem, and they are sending me another one. I don't know if I should be annoyed that the device broke or pleased with the hassle-free service (my phone call with Amazon was answered quickly, and I was off in less than five minutes). I guess I am a little of both!

Has anyone else had problems with their Kindles?

*****Update
M new kindle arrived this morning at around 10:00 am. I was able to pick up on my book right where I left off. I try not to get upset when problems arise. I do however care about how the problem is solved. I called Amazon at 11:45 pm on Monday night, and by 10:00 am Wed morning my problem was fixed at NO cost to me, and no questions, and no hassle. They want the broken Kindle back, but sent me a mailing label so I could mail it at no cost to me. I am impressed with the ease and speed that this has been taken care of. So many companies have great products (comcast and verizon come to mind) but their customer service is AWFUL and anything BUT hassle-free. I have to say I am beyond impressed and ultimately a happy customer, which for Amazon is good, because that probably means I am a repeat customer!

<knock on wood>

I havent had any issue with my Kindle.

Maybe it has to do with the cold weather or maybe it was handled roughly during the busy holiday delivery season.

I'm glad to hear that your Customer Service experience was good. I've had very good luck with them.

When I first got my Kindle....I didnt have my own Amazon account. John and I had shared an account and it was never an issue. As the Kindle was registered in my name, having John's name of the account confused everything.

Amazon CS was able to find the issue and sort things out with one short phone call.

Good luck and let us know how things work out.

Amazon Kindle Customer service is really good. Also if you buy a book and it doesn't read well on the kindle (say the graphs are not readable) you can return it within 7 days. Actually they will return it for any reason. Good to know if you buy something that turns out to be not what you were looking for.

I had a microwave do the same thing. Brand new, 2 days out of the box, the thing turns into an 18 by 24 by 12 inch boat anchor.

I had to laugh - stuff like this happens. The real measure of any company is how they stand behind their product or service when something goes wrong.

I have a first gen Kindle (pre Oprah AND Kevin) and the back of the case cracked for no reason about 4 months in. Even though it didn't impact the performance at all, I was afraid it might eventually. Amazon replaced it with no problems.

My first Kindle died about 6 months after I got it. A big chunk, about a third, of the electronic paper stopped working. Amazon replaced it very quickly. I've been using the replacement for about a year with no problems. Now that evil Kevin has me lusting after an Oberon cover for it. Luckily, they're all so beautiful I can't make my mind up! ;-)

The first book I read (start to finish) on my Kindle was Randy Pauch's Last Lecture. It was a good start.

I covet all of your kindles. The family didn't get the hint this year.

This does make me consider the exended warranty, which I usually won't buy, BUT, my issue was covered under the warranty which is why it was fixed at no cost to me.... We'll see though...
