My husband saw our first humming bird today. We were running from window to window trying to spot him again. These little birds make me so Happy! I'm putting in a new flower garden(25x25)and hoping to make my little hummers happy. Susan

One thing that aways attracts early hummingbirds are red rhododendrons and azaleas they love nectar from these shrubs.

They are very easy to miss. You almost have to be looking for them.

I love hummingbirds but I don't seem to have good luck with them in Michigan. I had lots when we lived in East Texas, though.

Nativetxn: From what I read hummers like to nest in pine trees. Our neighbor has a lot of very large pines. We never had any hummers in our yard until my husband took his big orange kubota tracter next door and the hummers followed him around. I put mandevilla vine on our deck and they just loved them. I have red hair and sometimes they will hoover over me. Hummers for some reason are naturally not afraid of humans. I'm also in the process of doing a 25ft x 25ft cutting garden and i plan on making it hummer freindly. I hope to have a yearly expansion. Nativetxn:If you live near a Bordines nursery they have lots of hummer freindly plants. They have a store in Rochester, Grand Blanc, Brighton and Clarkston. The Rochester and Clarkston stores are very large. Susan

I saw my first hummingbird yesterday - it was trying out my tulips! (until my dog started chasing it!)
It was the first one I've seen in my yard after being here 4 years!

KathyMC: Exciting isn't it! We also put up humming bird feeders that suction to your window. We have them suctioned to our living room windows and kitchen window. We hang them in shaded areas and the hummers really like them.Susan

redd45, thank you for the info about pine trees and hummingbirds! I have a hummingbird that has been zipping back and forth among the big pine trees across the bottom of my backyard and now I know that there is probably a nest somewhere! I have often seen them at my trumpet-like flowers of my weigela bush, which is far from flowering right now.
