DH went to lunch with a friend/business associate. A man at the table next to him began to choke. Several restaurant patrons and staff tried to help, but no one really knew what to do. DH called 911 and helped flag down the ambulance while is friend tried to help the man. He choked for 3 to 5 minutes before dying. DH is really shook up. I am calling my local hospital right now to find out about first aid classes. :sad1:

How horrible.
I can't believe no one knew how to do the Heimlich maneuver, especially none of the servers.

My thoughts go out to this man's family. I am sorry that your husband had to see this.

BTW ~ I am shocked that no one at the restuarant knew how to do the Heimlech. You would think that at the very least the manager would be required to know this.

Kind of surpring. I think we learned it in 8th grade gym class.

What an awful way to die!

There was just a thread about a wife saving her husband from choking yesterday. I have seen my own husband choke at a restuant and was thankfully given the Himlich by the man sitting behind us. It was very scary. The wait staff there had no idea what to do either.

I almost wonder if waiters should be trained to do the Himlich.

He said several people tried to do the Heimlich, but either they weren't doing it right or it just didn't work.

I am very sorry your husband had to witness this. How very sad..... Hugs to him.

Oh my god how scary. My brother in law is known for doing that. He is not allowed to eat steak or pork chops when my sister isn't around b/c everytime he chokes. We were in Disney last fall with my sister and her husband and the one morning my sister decided to stay back in the room while we went for breakfast he choked. But Thankfully he got it up himself. It was the scariest thing ever. I happened to look up at him and saw his eyes buldging and watery and realized he was choking on a piece of sausage. It took him a minute and threw some of it up and got up and walked away to the bathroom to get the rest that was enlodged in his throat up. Thank god he was ok but boy was it scary.

I had CPR wayyy back in middle school. Last night my neighbor's brother was on the verge of dying from an accidental overdose. His mother was doing CPR on him and I froze. I could not remember how to do it.

You would think all employees in restaurants would be required to know how to do it.

Oh man. What a scary thing to witness. :( I'm sorry he had to witness that and same to the others who were there. :(

It's possible that it was an allergic reaction, which can resemble choking, but no food is stuck.

It is very possible that either the Heimlich that several people tried just would not work, but it is also possible that he had another problem that resembled choking. Food allergy, maybe. Heart attack, some sort of stroke, etc. May have had food in his mouth but been killed by something else. Who's to say for sure.

How sad for his family, and anyone who witnessed this.

I was also thinking this.

Also, some foods are almost impossible if not possible at all to expel. My dm who's a Med assistant told me that in one of her college classes, the professor told ppl NOT to EVER let kids stuff marshmellows in their mouths. (aka the 'chubby bunny game) Marshmellows form a perfect seal in the windpipe and are almost impossible to expel.
