which is really getting to me. We are an older couple who just bought a house in an Adult active comminity. This is our first new home :sunny:

We had the option of having a fire place installed, but is was $3000.00, way too much money.
Here's the problem, I went to Lowe's and bought a gas fire place, (this is what he insisted he wanted. I was willing to have an electric one that if I want to relocate it, it would be easy
WELL he read the brochore and is now saying it is unsafe. It is a ventless fire gas fireplace.
He says he cannot install it. MEN. No problem I will have one put it in. We already paid to have a gas line run.

BIG QUESTION. Does anyone have a ventless gas fireplace and any information would be a God Send. Was it hard to install, Is it dangerous, This one comes with a firebox and you can buy your own mantle.

I bought the fire box and that is when he started reading everything you have to do and all the warnings.
PLEASE anyone with one of these fireplaces have any information.

Very greateful for any replies.

Cannot offer you information on ventless gas fireplaces but seems to me if there is concern with what you have, then why not just return it and get something else?

Have seen beautiful ventless fireplaces advertised that use sterno cans for a flame behind artificial logs. Get the effect of a real fireplace without all the bother.

Best wishes.

my uncle is a heating/cooling engineer. i asked him this question and he said that these types of fireplaces are reasonably safe, sort of like having a gas cooking stove. his final thoughts are that all heaters that burn a fossil fuel should be vented for safety sakes.

Doesn't "ventless" in this case mean it doesn't have to have a whole chimney?

I think I saw one of those on one of the home improvement shows on HGTV.

I would go back to the store where you bought it...I bet someone there can give you all the details you need...including if you need professional installation.

Good luck!

Why don't you just get a gas one that isn't ventless??? they go out the wall...I just ordered one a gas stove one that looks like a wood burning one to heat our new room over a new garage we are building....I researched them a lot and they are very safe......

Thanks for all your replies. I am, at this point thinking of going to the Electric Fireplace.

I would love the gas one because of the effect of real wood burning. Also the one great advantage of these fireplaces is that if you lose your electricity you still have heat.

Actually they have no chimney and there is a small risk. I would not burn it when sleeping or taking a nap.

We had two ventless propane heater/fireplaces a few years ago. DH who has an hvac business had no problems with them. I would say just make sure you keep them maintained. I never smelled fumes in the house but to be safe I did put in CO detectors in this house which never went off.

We use a ventless propane fireplace for all of our heating all winter. Wouldn't go any other way. If you just bought one, there is a very sensitive co2 detector built in. It automatically shuts the system down if so much as a fleck of dust might cause a blockage somewhere. We love ours and would never think of changing to something else.
