I made my own "uncrustables" and froze them. We will eat these on our ride to WDW and then I'll make more to eat at the parks for lunch. You can use any sandwich mixture - pb&j, tuna salad, chicken salad, even small pieces of coldcuts.... I buy the Dollar Store "ziplock" bags.

These use two slices of bread and contain a mixture of pb&j:

My youngest son only likes crunchy peanut butter with NO jelly, so these are made with one slice of bread:

Don't worry, I eat all the crusts with the leftover pbj mixture. I don't just throw them away.

We'll eat pop tarts for breakfast, these "uncrustables" for park lunches and then we'll buy snacks in the parks. This allows us to be able to eat a nice park dinner or eat offsite.

Every little bit helps.... Anyone else do this too?

cool! I bought a pamper chef thingy for these which i hardly use. I hated the crust whe i was lil but i like it now-lol!
Love crustables yum!

Does the tuna salad get soggy???

I got a gadget from pampered chef when my dd was 3 (she's now almost 15) - and it's perfect for making these. I used to do it all the time and when we saw uncrustables in the market my dd flipped.

great idea! How did you get the edges so pretty?!?

I bought the Pampered Chef "thing" for the 2-slice uncrustable.

The 1-slice uncrustable was some white hard plastic thing I bought at a kitchen store that has a handle that squeezes together to form the seal.

We do this alot. :thumbsup2 Peanut butter is one of the few things my child can eat and it travels well. I bought a plastic shape (think large cookie cutter) thing that I use to make shaped sandwiches.

The hard plastic thing sounds like a empanada/ravioli make.

Thanks for the tip.. I have the papered chef one and this is a easy breakfast or snack idea.

Great idea to freeze them! Wonder how long they keep in the freezer.

I do this for the school year. Usually make a huge batch (3-5 loaves of bread worth), all with peanut butter and different jellies or honey and then freeze them. My kids love them, I love being able to use whole wheat bread, all natural no sugar peanut butter, and either low sugar jelly or ones my Granny cans. The longest I have kept them in the freezer was 6 months and they were still great. As soon as they thaw, you can't tell they didn't come from the box. My kids' friends don't believe I make them, hahaha!!

PS-I wrap a bunch in Press'n Seal and then cut each one out so it is individually sealed, put about 6 or 8 in a freezer quart baggie and then a few of those bags in a freezer gallon baggie, trying to ward off any freezer burn. This is the only thing I ever ordered from Pampered Chef and we love it!

Hmmm, I have one of those pampered chef thingys, I should put it to use. Thanks for the motivation!

Yippee! What a cool idea!!!! Never thought to do this on my own...DD doesn't love the store bought ones because she likes a little PB and a little honey. But this is a fantastic idea for summer! We go so many places in the heat that this would thaw nicely! And at WDW, too! DD never eats much when we go out because she is so excited. I hate to waste the money on a kids meal when she takes two bites. This way she ca have something waiting that she like when she is hungry! Thanks for the info and pics!!!

Thanks! I didn't know they make a press like that! Got on ebay and ordered one today! My dd loves uncrustables, but they get expensive!

You can buy the presses at the dollar store... Here they are called pierogi/ravioli cases. You get 5 sizes for $1.00. I have also seen them at Target, Kmart, Big Lots, etc. Oh and even Michaels.

The Pampered Chef "thingy" that everyone's talking about is called Cut 'n Seal. You can use it to make raviolis, tarts or, apparently, Uncrustables!

Thanks for the tip. My little one likes just PB. Never thought of using the empanada maker for that. Just the right amount for him. Thanks.

Does the tuna salad get soggy???

Anything that might get soggy (as tuna salad might) won't if you butter both insides of the bread before spreading the tuna (or whatever) on it. This also works to keep jam or jelly from "bleeding" through.

If you like honey with your peanut butter add a little honey (and, if you wish, also a little butter to make it less stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth) to your peanut butter and mix it up with a fork. Don't worry about proportions, add what tastes the best to you without making it runny. Use room temerature ingredients. This mixture doesn't require buttering the bread.

Yum!

I bought the pampered chef thingy last year,ds loves it, but HOW do you prevent the bread from cracking? I can't seem to do it without it breaking up,and then it ruins the whole effect...much less get them into a freezer without breaking up,especially with WW bread, which is stiffer by far than squishy white bread? (which I break also:confused3)

Wow what a great idea! I was just invited to a Pampered Chef party on the 19th, now I know what to buy. My daughter loves Uncrustables, but at $3.39 for 4, it is a sometimes treat. I like being able to use my own ingredients as I'm not a fan of white bread.

I have never thought of freezing them. Good idea to have on hand for last minute lunch ideas. Did you freeze fillings other than PB&J, like tuna? I also like the press n seal idea. I usually use a wrap-n-mat but when at the parks press n seal seems like a good idea on those, thanks.

About the bread breaking - I have only had that happen a few times, with thicker, hearty breads. I rolled them out a bit and that seemed to fix it.
