My hamster has fleas!

I had no idea that hamsters could get fleas! Poor guy. I treat the other animals with frontline so we never see them, but there they are on the tiny little hamster.

Poor little guy - is there anything you can do? I don't think that they make teeny tiny hamster flea collars!

I'm planning on cleaning his cage and picking them off. He is all white so they are easy to see. So far, I have only found 2 on him, but you can see a couple of bites on the poor guy. I also think I need to keep him up higher so they can't get to him again.

If that doesn't work, I guess I can dust him with kitten flea powder and/or use this spray designed for hamsters. I hate to use pesticides when he is so small unless I have to.

I would guess that means you have them in your house. They wouldn't just magically appear on the hamster. We had a bad case of fleas a couple years ago. I got rid of them on the cat sooner then everywhere else because of frontline. They were sand fleas coming in with my kids from the beach. We had a pet hedgehog and he had flease. We changed and cleaned his cage and I gave him a couple baths in diluted cat flea shampoo. You couldn't pick them off him. LOL. I imagine there was a risk but he was going to get sick from the fleas. When I bathed him there would be bits of blood in the water from the fleas.

Awww, poor thing! I guess I never realized tiny hamsters could get fleas too! I had no idea they make a flea spray for hamsters. I would definitely use that rather than the cat stuff. You just never know if the cat stuff would be too strong (even diluted) for such a little guy.
