My garbage disposal stinks!

They sell tablets in that you put in the disposal. They foam and do a pretty good job. I find them by the dishwasher soap but I've also seen them at home improvement stores like Menards, Lowes, Home Depot...

I have a couple of suggestions.

Try grinding ice in your disposal, it is supposed to help clean it.

Then grind some citris rinds. This is supposed to help with the smell.

When this happened to me, and none of the above methods helped, I discovered the nasty problem. There was old rotten food particles stuck on the underside of the rubber pieces at the entrance of the disposal.

So I took a sponge with a cleanser containing bleach and turned the sucker inside out to clean it. It was DISGUSTING. But it worked!!

Definitely take the rubber pieces out--they should pull out completely and can be popped back in place after cleaning, or heck, just replace them! The nasty stuff I found on the underside of that black rubber thing made my skin crawl. I wish I had known it would pull out for cleaning years ago. Shudder.

If you cannot get yours out, sprinkle a box of baking soda into your disposal and let it sit there for awhile. Then pour the vinegar in there. All the things mentioned above will help too: citrus rinds, ice cubes, and I also recommend pouring boiling water down the drain. Doing all of these things for maintenance periodically.....

My aunt just had a plumber guy over to replace the disposal. Of course, he had to try to fix it first as part of the warranty policy, but wound up replacing it entirely.

He said about once a month, grind up about a half a bag of ice. This cleans and helps sharpen the blade. I watched him do that, and after about 2 minutes of the water filling sink up, all of sudden this brown yucky mess started coming up out of the drain. Then it suddenly all started to go back down the way it's supposed to. He did it a second time with a little less ice, and only a little bit of brown came up before going back down.

So get a sink full of ice, turn the cold water on, and let it run. Afterwards, toss down an orange or lemon and let it do it's thing.

If I have fish or something that requires a bit of lemon juice, I use the left over half to clean the countertops, sink, and stove. Then chuck it into the disposal.

I use a garbage disposal brush to clean it and the underside of the rubber gasket thing. I sprinkle in Comet, run a little water, then go at it!

I bought the brush at a big box store. It looks like a smaller version of a toilet bowl brush.

I had the same problem and researched it on the internet. It is due to that little gasket thingy. I solved it finally. I just poor some baking soda down it then pour vinegar in. It bubbles up and cleans the gasket. I now do it periodically and no more smells. I am so happy that google saved me!!

I have used stuff called Disposal Care (i think) it is at Wal mart and Target by the diswasher stuff, in a blue and yellow box - it has packets of cleaning stuff that you put in the disposal, turn the water and and thurn the diaposal on- it foams up for a few seconds, and the smell is gone.

Yep, I drink tons of iced tea, so there are always lemons in my disposal. It has never smelled.
