My Friend Just Did the Nicest Thing!

My friend and I live at opposite ends of the city; about a half hour apart. I have two dogs, and she has one lovely, well behaved dog that plays well with ours so for the last two years when they went away on vacation I offered to keep her dog here with us. Three and a half weeks ago they dropped their dog off for a two week stay. As it happened, I was leaving on a week's vacation the same day as they were returning, so I got their spare key from them and dropped their dog off in their home before I left (they were back about 4 hours after I dropped him off).

When I returned home tonight after a gruelling 15 hour, 1400 KM drive (that we did in one day), I found three bags of food waiting for us on the front porch! Two cooler bags with cooked chicken, pasta and potato salads, milk, juice, eggs, bread, cereal, even toaster strudel for the kids! Everything we needed to have a much appreciated quick supper and for breakfast tomorrow. She even included a frozen cake (still cold!) for dessert. How thoughtful! She drove an hour round trip to leave these things for us to thank us for taking care of her dog (now, granted, I had driven an hour round trip to take him home so they wouldn't have to detour to get him on their way home so I guess she thought she would return the favour!)

Not only did she bring all of these things, but she also included a $25 gift card for Chapters/Indigo Books. Way over the top and completely unnecessary but very, very much appreciated. We didn't have a drop of milk in the house so it was great to not have to go out to the store after we got home!

Awwww. That is sweet! A real friend. You reap what you so, and you deserve it obviously.

Isn't it so nice to have a real friend All we need is one, and I have one who is the same to me as you have described. We are blessed if we have more, but one will do it!

I had a friend do something similar years ago. It was when we went on our first trip to Disney so 1997. She hd our key to come take care of our cat. We came home to all the basics, brad, milk, eggs, juice. It was really nice cause we too drive and were so tired. She was a wonderful friend, she passed away about a year later. I always said that I would do the same if I was in that situation but I never have been, but the cooler, now that is a great idea. That never would have occoured to me.
Yep, she's a good friend to even think to do that.

It is a dream for a pet owner to have someone that they trust take care of their pet(s) while they're away. Especially for as long as two weeks. And I get the impression you're doing this for free? Of course it is for free! I actually get upset with her for trying to "pay" me with gifts, but of course I accept graciously. This gift was really awesome! Another friend of ours had asked my friend to walk their dog while they were away (dog was staying with an older neighbour, so my friend picked up the dog each day when she was walking her own dog). In return, they would have kept friend's dog instead of me, but they are fastidious about their housekeeping (this dog sheds...ALOT!)and have a lot of rules for their dog. Plus, that dog had attacked friend's dog a couple of weeks ago when they were both off leash at the park, so I knew he'd be happier here with us. I said "hey, I asked first!".

We have great dog sitters for our two when we go out of town (this time we were driving so they came with us), they sleep in bed with them just like they do with us! It is a blessing to not have to worry about your pets.
