I work for a solo physician and have since he opened up 3 yrs ago. It's a small office with myself, receptionist, billing person and part-time nurse. The practice has built up tremendously but now the office is chaos! His time management is poor, people waiting 1-1 1/2 hrs which is inexcusable. He is not a surgeon or Ob-Gyn that must leave or stay at hospital. He has created an atmosphere where people call him by his first name and drop in at all hours. We never close for lunch and put on answering service only to get caught up. Phones ring non-stop and since there is only 1 receptionist I answer a lot which leads to a lot of interruptions when I am with patients. He knows we need a phone mail system but won't get it til we move to bigger office in next few months. Also adding a Nurse Practitioner which he hopes will ease patient load. He recently gave me written warning detailing things I have done wrong (messages overlooked, patients complaining I was rude on phone) I told him this was bound to happen with the way the office is. I am hurt and shocked by this since we were all so close and he never admits that he is a big factor with why things are this way. Will only say how hard he works and that he is never home. ( has a large personal debt and just had another child.) I work from 45 min to an hour over every day and he complains I can't get my work done! So, do I hope things will change? or start looking elsewhere?

Being in the health care field myself, I would encourage you to try to discuss this with him. Provide him with facts (like a time study on what you do in a day) and give him solutions to the issues he has raised. If he is not open to discussing the issue, look for another job. Good luck.

I don't know but I think if I were you I'd start looking elsewhere. If he doesn't recognize the problem and is blaming you - he doesn't sound very supportive.

Good luck with the situation and your decision.

You are intitled to write up response to your warning. I would do this and use this letter to detail why the office is not runnung smoothly and constuctive ways to make it better for everyone. I would also ask to have a meeting with him to go over the letter and work together to make changes. If he is not receptive to this then I would look for another position.

There are jobs out there. Go for it. Here is my little tale from EZ's job thread. I left without a job to go to, but had another within three days. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

"Wish me luck. I not only did the job for which I was hired 5 1/2 years ago but absorbed the billing clerk and admin assistant's jobs when they were laid off. I was also served as a back up for a co-worker and assumed his five accounts when he was off. I have not had a raise in 2 years. The final straw was the "pay enhancement". My company decided to save money by doing away with our paper pay stubs. They plan to have 3 year's worth of W2, W4 and pay vouchers stored on the Internet for our "easy access". Unfortunately the only way to opt out of this program was to quit. I gave my notice and my last day was December 20th. I went to a temp agency and by December 23rd, I had a position. I start a new job on January 10th. I may take a small pay cut, but my peace of mind and freedom of choice are worth it to me."
