I recently returned from my first trip to WDW. It was short (only 2 days).
But first a little background, for the last 10-11 years I have watched and listened to my 2 sisters and my niece rant and rave about how great WDW is and how it truly is the happiest place on Earth. They average 2-3 trips a year and have been on 3 versions of the cruise. But I wasn't believing any of it. Two years ago, I weighed 610 pounds and never would have thought of traveling to WDW. But now after undergoing Gastric Bypass Surgery and losing 300 lbs. the time had come. My sisters and my niece were going on the 7 day cruise and then coming back to WDW for 2 more days and they convinced me to join them in WDW. I decided to go for it. Now I love to drive so I figured I was going to leave Upstate N.Y. Thursday morning and I would arrive in Disney on Saturday morning. Unfortunately, my uncle found out about my trip (he loves Fla.) and he asked if he could join me. He has a bad back (multiple disk damage, fusion and nerve damage) so I figured I'd better leave early on Wednseday so the trip would be easier on him. (What I should have done was told him no!) But, alas, we left around 5A.M. Wed. The first 2 hours weren't bad but it went down hill from there, he constantly critized everything: my maps, my car, my driving, everyone else's driving and of course my speed (usually limit+5, sometimes +10). Then the rest stops started. I swear I hit every rest stop between NY and Va. His constant yelling was just about to make me turn around but I kept thinking I was heading to the happiest place on Earth. We stopped that night in Va. (about 20 miles from the NC border). After eating dinner Unc decided that we would leave Thur. morning and drive to Savannah, Ga. (I had other plans.)
I woke him up early and hit the road, hit Savannah around 12:30 PM and then convinced Unc that we couldn't check into a motel until 3 PM so we might as well continue on. Spent the night in St. Augustine, Fla. Friday morning I only had about 3 hours to go to get to Orlando, but I wasn't going to meet my sisters and niece until Saturday so I knew it was going to be a long day. I guess by now I was immune to Unc's constant moaning and complaining so I figured I could make it. We arrived in Orlando and stayed in a "suite" next to "Old Town". I went to the supermarket and picked up some food to keep Unc. happy (and quiet)
and left him at the room. I spent the rest of the day riding around sightseeing. I also watched the Classic Car Show at Old Town. Later I went back to the motel knowing that tomorrow I would check in at the Poly and I wouldn't have to deal with Unc alone for a couple of days!
More to come, Joey
