Okay I took the plunge and purchased a Canon T1I last week and got the kit lens and also purchased a telephoto lens as well. I paid around a grand for the whole kit.

I am now having second thought and might end up returning it... I know very little about photography.

First question did I buy a good camera for a beginner?

I hear that the T2I is comming out what price point is it at and should I have waited?

Someone please help me get rid of my buyers remorse.

I know this won't help...but you did pay a bit much for the combo. It's been on special in the $730 range in the past.

Nevertheless, you got a great camera for experts and beginner's alike. That's the excellent part about a DSLR, even entry level cameras are very capable.

What is the reason why you want to return it?

The Canon T1i 18-55IS and 55-250IS is a good combination for the beginner, A new DSLR model comes out every few months so you will always behind the "price point". Having said that, if I was buying now I would probably get the new T2i (550D), more features but of course it come with a higher price!

I don't think you overpaid for that kit. I hate to disagree with one of the previous posters but at Adorama that kit sells for $1,100 with free shipping.

At B & H just the body is $650 and with the 18-55 IS lens it is $750. They don't sell a kit with the 18-55 and 55 250. The T2i is not yet available on the websites. Of course it is nice to get the latest bells and whistles, but that doesn't mean your camera is obsolete! I shoot with Pentax K10d that was introduced in 2006. I am still very happy with the images it produces. I have found the limiting factor in my photography is me! Cameras are like computers, the average person can never keep up with the latest technology! Unless the camera is uncomfortable in your hand or has some other unappealing issue, IMHO go forth, learn and enjoy it.

My two cents!!

If it makes you feel any better, I paid about a grand for it the week it came out. And that was only with the kit lens. But you definitely have a nice camera. After playing around with it, and getting to learn more about photography, you won't regret that purchase one bit. I know; the T1i is my first dslr too. My flickr page has quite a few Disney pics taken with that camera, if you wanna see what it can do.

Have fun with your new baby!!!! :thumbsup2

Sounds like an okay price from what I've seen and if you were thinking about moving to DSLR then stick with it IMHO. As someone who made the big jump last summer from point 'n shoot bridge cameras I know how you feel! It can seem overwhelming but it is manageable!

Remember there is always the "P" mode to shoot in for starters and just take pictures with the kit lens.

And ask away on here!!!

The T1i with kit lens runs around $900 up here in Canada, if you got the 55-250 IS with it for $100 more you got a good deal, as that lens usually runs around $300. If I were getting a first DSLR I'd go with the t1i, it might seem like too much camera at first but you'll grow into it once you start doing some shooting. Enjoy it and have fun!

Hi everyone, I just popped over to this site because Dh and I are in the market for our first slr. This thread is especially interesting to me because I had about narrowed my choice down to the Canon TIi and I was coming over here to see if there was any feedback on it.

Nice to see that people think it's a decent camera. I've been a bit overwhelmed with finding the best price points. If that can't be mentioned here, would someone please pm me where they feel a decent place to shop would be? We're looking at buying it with the 2 lenses, if that makes a difference.
Thanks for any and all help. :goodvibes

Thanks everyone for their thoughts on my new toy. I had it out this morning at my son's hockey game and shot some of the best pictures I have ever personally done. I love the sports feature and the abilty to just keep snapping as the play is ongoing.

Now I just need to learn what the different ISO's and shutter speeds do. Looks like I have a lot of learning ahead of me and a new hobby.

The thousand dollars was in Canadian and it was for the 18-55 lens and the 55-250 both image stabilizer lens.

Welcome to the "Canon Entry-Level dSLR Group" (which doesn't exist but maybe I should start a thread for one)! :)
Canon's Rebel series has really become a serious group of cameras since the Xsi, Xs, T1i, and now T2i. These cameras may be marketed as entry-level but their performance is far beyond that.

Your 18-55 and 55-250 are a great pair of lenses to start with and are hard to beat without spending a *lot* more $$$. Have fun and enjoy your new camera! :)

I aslo just got the Canon rebel XS...it is very overwhelming at first but exciting too. I'm looking to purchase a second lens an contemplating the 55-250. I just wish it would stop raining here so I can actually take my camera outside for some practice!!!

I think you can relax on this purchase a bit. I'd say even if you have no plans of doing this for business and only for hobby you will want to upgrade in a year or two anyway. So relax a little and jump right in and have fun. Check out the book Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson and most your worries will be put to rest. You can borrow from library or find used cheap but I highly recommend it as many do. It will help you learn all you need to get started and he makes it very easy to follow.

I'm a Nikon girl and did pass up the entry level D40/60 for a D80 and I too am just approaching my 2nd year with it and already want to upgrade. ;) Just saying that even if you got the T2i you will likely get to a point you'd want to upgrade no matter the model you chose.
