This was my family’s last first trip to WDW. I am very sad to know that we will no longer have that awe in our eye’s as we see everything for the first time. Ok it wasn’t my first trip but it had been so long since I had been to WDW it may as well have been my first trip.

My very first trip was when I was either 7 or 8 years old. I pretty sure it was the summer after first grade and I would have been 7. It would have been in 1973. My parents just got a travel trailer and WDW was one of the first places we went. We stayed at the campground which is now known as Fort Wilderness. It may not have been called that at the time but I can’t remember. What I do remember was that we brought our dog, Gretchen, and we put her in the WDW kennels. We were all impressed that we had choices regarding the flavor of dog food and the cleanliness. We thought Gretchen had a better place to stay than us! I also remember standing in line forever for Space Mountain. They had tickets that we had to use so I think we only got to ride on it once. We were able to use other resorts pools and I was so impressed with The Polynesian and Contemporary's pools. I wanted to go down that water slide at The Poly but I was too short. It is still one of my dreams to be able to go down that slide!

This is a picture of me at that age. I am pretty certain I am at the pool at The Contemporary:

My second trip came when I was a high school sophomore in 1983. My father had a conference and we stayed at The Contemporary. What a fun trip. I met a boy but since my kids will be reading this I won’t give details. It was wonderful to be able to ride the monorail so easily. Epcot had just opened too. I don’t think they even had everything open yet. All I remember is Spaceship Earth and Living w/ the Land. I am not even sure they were called this back then. I think that is all I am going to say about that trip other than the beach at The Poly can be quite romantic. :flower3:

DH and I went to Disneyland the summer we started dating which was in 1989. We went with my mom and sister who was 13 at the time. It was a nice day but still don’t remember a whole lot other than one of the most traumatic events in my life…. riding Astro Orbiter. :scared1: I rode w/ DH and my sister in one rocket. I became panicked as soon as we started spinning. I was sitting in the front and was in charge of the lever to move us up. I held it down with all my might. DH was going “what’s wrong, what’s wrong?” I was crying so I couldn’t tell him what was wrong. I think he must have grabbed the lever from me because we eventually were able to rise up even higher. DH had thought that since there were 3 of us in the car we were too heavy. When we got off he was completely shocked to see how upset I was. The question is, will my next ride on Astro Orbiter be any better? If you keep reading you may soon find out.

DH and I took our two older kids when they were 6 and 4 to Disneyland too. We went with my mother and father. My father was just starting to become ill and had recently had a stroke. This was in 2000. This was a fun day. I took DD, age 6, on her first roller coaster. We went on Disneyland’s version of Big Thunder Mountain. I don’t recall if it has the same name. It was fun but I had just found out I was pregnant with our youngest so was too worried to do any other rides. We saw kind of show with Woody. We also did all of the Fantasyland rides. I remember my dad was so excited to ride the teacups with my kids. It scared me to death because he was in a lot of pain still. My dad died a little more than a year later and I am glad I have that memory of him in the tea cups with my kids. He laughed so much going around in those circles.

Here is a picture of DH and kids. I think they are in Astro Orbiter but it doesn't look high enough to me. Please feel free to correct me if I am mistaken. Notice who is not in this picture.

I think I may be out of space so will continue in a little bit. Sorry for the strange pictures that I had to scan. This is my first time that I have ever scanned photos. I think I did something wrong. I will accept any tips on how to make this a cleaner TR. Also, how do you tell when you have used too much space?

Hi,
I love old photo's of WDW and Disneyland.

When you scan your pictures, there will be a cutted line surrounding your picture. You can click on that line, and it will let you crop the line to your picture. That way, you won't have all that extra space surrounding your picture, when the scanner scans the picture. First do a pre-scan, then edit/crop, then let the scanner scan. Hope that helps.

Looking forward to your TR.

Marisa

Thank you so much for the tip. I did more than plan a WDW trip. I developed computer skills!!!;)

I had always told DH that I wanted to take the kids to WDW when the kids were old enough. He kind of had an attitude that we had already been to Disneyland twice, what’s the big deal. :confused3 I kept telling him that WDW was totally different. 2008 was finally there year we got to go. Let me introduce you to the cast of characters for this trip:
IM000732-2.jpg

Me: From here on out I guess you can refer to me as Minnie. I am quite petite so I guess that it is appropriate. I love amusement parks. I have friends my age that just dread taking their kids to Six Flags and some friends that have never done it. I love all the rides, junk food and everything else about them. The one thing I can’t stand are lines. I have no patience for them. This is why I felt it important to develop a strategy. We decided that we make the trip this year in Feb. 2008 and made reservations as soon as I felt I knew enough to know where we wanted to stay. I then found the question and answer area on the Disney web site. That web site let me to the All Ears web site. Some how I found the DIS boards in March. I became hooked. Hopefully after I do this trip report I will be ably to pry myself away. I may need an intervention to help break me of my addiction.

DH: From here on we will call him Mickey since I am Minnie. Mickey is a great guy. A very supportive husband and has been quite patient with my obsessive planning for WDW. He is more of a “whatever you think dear” kind of guy when it comes to vacations. He works a lot and doesn’t tend to relax too much. But were we able to get him to relax and enjoy himself in WDW?

DD14: We will call her Mulan from this moment forward. Mulan is her favorite Disney character. Mulan wasn’t too into the WDW trip. She didn’t want to watch any of the shows on Travel Channel, read any of the books, and discuss any of the restaurants. She wanted to go to Washington DC to the Holocaust museum. Yes, my 14 yr old would rather go to the one of the saddest places on earth vs. the happiest place on earth. I am still trying to understand. :confused3 Will she end up liking WDW after all?

DS12: Let’s call him Goofy. He would watch shows with me on the Travel Channel. He was excited about this trip! He wanted a plan so we could do everything. He knew that Dumbo was the first ride you went on when you arrived at opening at MK. Is all of our planning going to work?

DD7: From now on will be known as Ariel. You will see why later. She was also excited about this trip. She watched a show with me on the Travel Channel where someone was talking about the kids going into the gift shops and the parents will say they can pick out one thing. The child will then narrow it down to either the lollipop or the princess dress which as we all know is way more expensive than a lollipop. From that moment on Ariel was determined to get both the dress and the lollipop. Will she succeed?

Once we decide to go on this trip I become obsessed with the planning. Where do we eat? What parks on what days. If you are reading this as a DISer then you know what I am talking about. I spend a lot of time on the DIS boards making plans and changing plans. I also get a lot of ideas I would have never dreamed of. Like this:

im0012192-1.jpg

And this:

im0012182.jpg

We choose POR since they are one of the few resorts that can accommodate a family of 5. We figured it was between POR and the family suites at All Star Music. We, I mean Goofy and I pick POR because we like the idea of a pool with a slide and taking the ferry to DTD. Everyone else wanted the extra space. Some how we over ruled them.

We decided on the basic DDP and opted not to do park hoppers. I thought I was being smart and planned most of days around evening EMH. I find out later through the DIS boards that this is a mistake but I don't want to change any of our ADRs. Will I be sorry for this later? :confused3

This was the itinerary that we ended up with:

Fri 08/08 – Arrival Day
Sat 08/09 – MK
Sun 08/10-Epcot
Mon 08/11 AK
Tues 08/12 Epcot
Wed 08/13 HS
Thurs 08/14 open
Fri 08/15 MK
Sat 08/16 - Departure

FINALLY WE ARE OFF AND RUNNING. HERE IS DAY 1.

Friday 08/08

It is 6 am and I am up and ready to go. By 7:30 am we are in the car for the 2 hour drive to the airport.

IM000753.jpg

Doesn't Mulan look happy!

(Goofy just informed me that Mulan was just excited about the plane ride):sad2:

We get to the airport at 10 am for a noon flight. The flight is delayed so we have time to take a picture.

im0007542.jpg

Finally we are on ME. We had a “happy, happy, happy:’ bus driver. I think his name was Emmanuel. He kept saying “Is everyone ready to get happy, happy, happy?” He was very funny. Goofy does a great impersonation of our ME driver but it would be lost in a photograph.

IM000755.jpg

Finally, we have officially made it to WDW.
IM000756.jpg

We arrive at POR resort. We are hungry so grab a snack.
IM000757.jpg

Coming soon: Dinner at Chef Mickey's.

Glad you had a good time. Me personally...I never lose that awe feeling when I enter the kingdom!!! :lovestruc

Great start ! I love your vintage photos. It took me a while to figure out which pool you were at. Contemporary, right ?

Your family is beautiful and it looks like you're already having a blast. We missed you by only 2 days !!!

Oh I am so glad you took time to look at my TR. I am honored as I feel that you may be the TR Goddess!:rotfl:

Yes, that is The Contemporary, I think.

Our plane had arrived at around 3:30. By the time we check in, grab our snack and check out our room it is about 6 pm. We have an ADR at Chef Mickey’s for 7:40. My goal had been that we could head over to MK and at least ride the train or walk down Main Street before we get on the monorail to The Contemporary for dinner at Chef Mickey’s. At about 6:00 we head to the bus stop. We do get a bus right away but we decide that we just don’t have enough time to go into MK because it is now around 6:30. I suggest that we take the monorail all the way around once before going to the Contemporary. “Can we do that?” says Mickey. I respond “Sure, we could just ride around on the monorail all day if we want”. The kids all think the monorail is a ride anyway. I do too actually. ;) So it is off to the monorail we go.

IM000758.jpg

smallmonorail.jpg

It is a good thing that we decided to skip a quick trip into MK because as soon as we get going on the monorail there is a major lightening/thunder storm. The kids get a little scared because of all the hard rain and lightening around us. I explain that there has never been a report of anyone dying on the monorail at WDW and they have these storms all the time. The monorail then stops! After about a minute there is a recorded announcement that they are waiting for a monorail to clear before moving on. “See” I tell the kids, “this is normal”. To myself I say “Yeah, right. We are all going to die”. Little do I know at this point is that this is normal. After all it has been 25 years since my last monorail ride.

It is still storming when we get off at The Contemporary. We decide to walk around their gift shop some as I had wanted to get the kids some Disney gift cards for their spending money. We check in at Chef Mickey’s at around 7:30 and this is what we see:

IM000761.jpg

The storm had gone just as quick as it came. We wait about 15-20 minutes and they call us back to our table. We head straight to the buffet. Sorry I don’t have too many food pictures. Believe me there wasn’t anything worth taking a picture of there. Besides, Minnie hasn’t told Mickey about the whole taking pictures of your food at WDW thing yet. While I found some things to eat like the salmon and prime rib my kids only liked the dessert bar. They hated the mac and cheese. The chicken nuggets weren’t anything to get excited about either. I can’t even remember what Mulan ate but she doesn’t eat chicken nuggets to begin with. I can’t imagine anyone eating here without kids or great desire to eat while you meet Mickey (the character not DH:laughing: ). The prime rib was ok at best. I thought it had a little bit of a weird cheap meat flavor to it. There was some kind of pesto pasta dish that I liked but it wouldn't be worth eating there just for that. Chef Mickey’s gets a big “YUCKO” rating.

I did get this picture of our dessert. Mickey thinks it is odd that I am taking a picture of my food but doesn’t say much about it.

IM000769.jpg

On to the characters. This part was fun as it was our kid’s first chance to see some of the characters.

IM000768.jpg

IM000763.jpg

IM000771.jpg

IM000765.jpg

At the end of the meal Mickey gets the check. “How much did we pay for this meal?” :scared1: Minnie says “Don’t worry. We don't have to pay, we just need to leave a tip. Well we did have to pay but we didn’t pay as much as it says”. Mickey says “Well how much did we pay and are you sure we aren’t paying this amount when I give them our card?’ I then explain the whole dining plan process to him, again. He seems ok with it. What can Mickey do at this point anyway? Oh, speaking of tip. I have no idea how much Mickey tipped but our waitress was Jessica. I don't think we ever saw or met Jessica. I don't think we had the same CM come to our table more than once. :confused3 I am also a little worried that I made a bad decision to do the DDP.

By this time it is late. I don’t know how we manage it but we end up at the MK bus stop just in time to see some of the fireworks. My goal is to get up early to see the opening show at MK. This is the part I worry about the most. This is why I picked our park days based on evening EMH’s. Getting 5 people up and going while they are supposed to be on vacation is always a challenge. I have read on these boards who unpredictable the buses are at POR so I tell everyone we have to be at the bus stop no later than 8 am and it takes at least an hour to get anywhere. Will we make the opening of MK? :rolleyes1

Enjoying your TR and pics! I thought I was going to get to read the whole thing, but I see you've just started it! :rotfl2:

Awaiting next installment!

Oh no...I've been so excited that we got a ressie at Chef Mickey's for December and now I"m afraid we'll be disappointed, too! In your opinion do you think it's worth it so we can see the characters and all? :confused3 Our kids are younger than yours (6,4,1 at the time) and this is the only character meal so to speak we're doing.

I love your rainbow picture and the monorail shots...the kids look soo excited! can't wait for the next installment!!!popcorn::
