My DS has pneumonia!

Well after the third trip to the local walk-in clinic the Doc decided he has pneumonia!

He started running a temp of over 100 last Tuesday and was sent home from school. On Wed. we took him to the clinic and the Doc on duty said that it was just a virus. Since he had no other symptoms - he said to just let it run it's course. On Sunday I took him back in and saw another Doc. By that time he's missed the whole rest of the week of school (thank goodness he's third grade teacher has been really understanding). The second Doc gives us an Rx for cough syrup and sends us home. This morning he finally has no temp and seems better so I sent him to school. By 9:30 the teacher calls because he is just miserable. So off to the Doc again. This time they take chest xrays and what do you know, he has pneumonia!

So now we finally get some antibiotics to treat him with. Next time I'll drive him an hour one way to go to his primary care physician. I'm just really ticked that it went on this long before they figured out something was really wrong!

The Doc says he's contagious and can't go back to school til next Monday! The poor kid is just feeling awful...I went and rented some movies for him to watch...It's gonna be a long week! I'm just glad I have an understanding boss and lots of sick time!

Thanks for letting me vent!

Well being a frequent pneumonia patient, I can certainly relate. As far as I know, though, it's not contageous. Never heard that one before. Perhaps some crafts for him while he's home would help too. Sending my thoughts that he recovers quickly.

Once he's better, check with your primary doctor and see if he can get the pneumonia vaccine. It's good for 5 years and pretty much keeps it away (at least it has with me). I swear by it.

 I hope that your son is feeling better soon! Both my DD's get pneumonia at least twice a year and it is tough to see them feeling horrible. Good luck and here's wishing he is back on his feet soon!

:sunny:

Poor little guy. Hope he is feeling better soon. The antibiotics usually do a great job in clearing it up.

Well I questioned the "contagious" issue too...but since my dad and mom watch him after school and whenever he's sick...I decided not to over-expose them to him just in case. My dad's 76 and mom's 68 so they definately don't need to catch what he has!

The doc has me giving him zithromax (sp?) which always works well for me. So hopefully this will do the trick!

I just look at it as quality time with my DS!:)

Some kinds of pneumonia are contagious. I have had viral and bacterial, and both kids have had bacterial. Dr. said even the bacterial type DD had last winter was contagious. You can do a search and read about the various types and which are contagious. Dr. just wanted her to stay home for the next day after she started the antibiotics and breathing treatment. I thought that was short, but 2 days later she was a well kid! :D Hope he feels better quickly!

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I was told that there are 2 types - viral & bacterial. The vaccine only works for one of those, but that's better than none! If, indeed, there are 2 types that would explain the contagious/not contagious thing too...one is one isn't.

When I was first told to get the vaccine, they thought it would only last 5 - 10 years. When I asked about getting the booster, I was told that they now think it's a once & done thing.

I hope he's feeling better soon!

Edited to add:
Looks like BBB posted while I was typing. ;) I'm glad to know my brain isn't completely gone yet. :teeth:

I get pneumonia ALOT due to weak lungs, and especially since I had radiation on my lungs. I liked having it when I was a kid cause I got presents, lol.

But it IS miserable and I feel for the little guy. Tell him that the DIS says get well soon and that we are all sending thoughts to get well soon!

Oh dear its here with my DD too. She has been sick since last week. We also saw the doc last week and it was just a cold. Its just gotten progressively worse till she was almost purple from coughing last night. Off to the doc today and sure enough both lungs...and a terrible ear infection that she has not once complained about.Zithromax for her too. I dont want to complain but we have been to the pediatrician 4 times now in the last month between both kids. I like the doc but for crying out loud I dont want to see her that often.
Hope your DS is better soon.

Good wishes, BF, for your little guy, and your DD too, Nelly.  Hope they are better and bouncing around again real soon. I know that Zith med works wonders here also, Marie uses it about once a year for respiratory infections that she seems prone to since her chemo/rad days. Always knocks it out quickly. Again, my best.

Wishing him a very speedy recovery.
Hang in there...my son has had his battles with it too. It's
never fun!

Both of my DS's have went through having pneumonia. Oldest DS had double pneumonia when he was 2 years old. Other DS just got over it back in May, right before we went to WDW. Sure hope your son is feeling better soon. It's miserable to be that sick.

Bless his heart. Is he feeling any better today?

I just said a quick prayer that your ds is 100% better very soon.

He seems a little better today. Last night was rough though. He hates to take cough medicine - but I finally put my foot down and bribed him!:) He would just cough and cough. It was horrible.

He's just been laying around watching TV all day - totally not like him - he's not even playing his video games...which means he's just really not feeling good at all. But at least there is no fever and he has not been coughing as much. Hopefully tomorrow will be even better...

I'm glad to hear that he is doing a little better, at least. Just said a quick prayer that he is 100% better very soon.

Keep us posted?
