DS was rushed into emergency surgery on Tues. hes appendix ruptured and had become gangrenous (sp?) Hes had several setbacks since then and his surgeon and dr. agree that starting school is a big mistake and he should make it for Jan. They did not close his incision and we can't get rid of the fever. They said his recovery is going to be at least 6 to 8 weeks.

Hes still pretty out of it (he has a morphine drip) but I know hes going to be so disappointed. I hope his recovery goes a bit more smoothly from here, its been a really rotten few days.

Oh, my. I'll be praying for a speedy recovery with no more set-backs.

Oh my! Yes, recovering from something like this takes priority! College will be there once he's strong enough. Keeping good thought for him. Hang in there!

Oh my!

I will send hugs your way. I hope he is feeling better soon!

My DD 5 had hers out last summer. The Dr. who did it said they routinely look for a bowel abnormality called Meckel's Diverticulum during every appendectomy they do. My DD had it. Did your son.

I think you are doing the right thing about waiting on school. Recovery seems to be harder the older the person is.

Take it easy. :grouphug: :grouphug:

That's too bad for your son. But, his recovery takes proirity.

:grouphug: to you both.

Look on the bright side :sunny:

The timing was good. He might have gone through tons of work only to get an I for INCOMPLETE.

I had emergency surgery in May of my sophomore year and lost a semester's worth of credit.

Hoping he's better and SOON! :)

Hugs to you and your son! :grouphug: Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Wow! How sad. I will keep your son in my thoughts and prayers.

Wow, Trish, a bummer. But, as said, best he is home soon rather than at college. A short time, and it will be January. That can be so serious, he is a lucky young man. He's in my prayers and good wishes, along with you.

Through a freak, next-to-nothing accident, I ended up with gas gangrene in my right hand several years ago.. I nearly lost my life and they were 100% certain they would have to amputate my hand.. God was on my side and they saved my hand - with only minimal permanent damage.. When I was finally released from the hospital, I had to go home with a pic line (IV), had daily visiting nurses and needed 6 weeks of home care in order to complete my recovery.. The actual healing of my hand dragged on for months and months..

You need to do exactly what the doctors say.. Gangrene is nothing to fool around with and college will still be there "whenever"..

I'm so glad that your son is okay.. Hang in there! :flower:

Oh no, Trish.....that is awful.
College will be waiting. Better to fully recover first.
Best wishes to him on a speedy one......and to you too.

Oh, I'm so very sorry this has happened to your son. Although I'm sure he realizes his continued recovery comes first, I'm sure not being able to start college now will still be a very big disappointment for him.

My best wishes for a quick recovery and continued good health. Tell him he'll have so much fun at school, it'll be worth the wait. ;)

{{{Hugs}}} to you, too, Mom.

:grouphug: Trish, I will be keeping you and your son in my prayer's. I hope all goes well for your son. Maybe you guys could plan a short trip to WDW as his healing comes along! Keep us posted.

I know exactly what you are going through! My DD was five when hers burst, and she was so sick, and it took her about 8 weeks to completely recover. They are SOOOOOOO sick those first few weeks! My DD was unable to walk without severe pain for three weeks following surgery, and she was five!

I still want to cry when I think about how serious it was. I assume he will be on an IV antibiotic for at least ten days, right? My DD was and she was a routine rupture.

I am sorry that he can't start school. My DD was at then end of kindergarten, so not as much was missed. I hate seeing my child so helpless. I hope never to see that again!

I will pray for you.

As they were putting a tube down into my DD's stomach- (yep she was awake for that) we promised her that very thing, and wheeled her around Disney four weeks into recovery! It was fun! I am glad Disney came out while I spoke to her instead of new car or diamond studded tiara!
