My dog's not eating

Sad Update....

She's gone. The vet opened her up to remove her spleen and found little white tumors all over her liver. He called me to see what we wanted. The vet told me that we could try to manager her pain and do everything possible to get her to eat. I told him that I had already tried everything and she hadn't eaten in several days. He told me that the other option of not letting her wake up was probably the most humane, so that is what we did.

Its just so hard to think about her beautiful little face and her sweet personality, and know that I'm not going to see her again for a long time (I believe that we will see her again up in Heaven.) DD13 was saying that she can't believe that Honey was just lying on her bed on Sunday afternoon and now she is gone. I'm glad I kissed Honey goodbye after the vet took her- I teared up and the vet did, too. Our vets are really good, kind vets, so I know they did everything that they could to help her.

We're all just really gonna miss her. Her hair was strawberry-blonde and she looked like a mix of Benji, Andrew from Mary Poppins, and Freeway from Hart to Hart. She was so cute. And she would always do this playful snapping at us when we came home. She was so sweet and funny. I think our Great Pyrenees Molly is missing her and wondering where she is- Molly was a puppy when we got her and Honey took her in as her baby.

Thanks to all for your kind words and advice.

I am so sorry to hear this. I am bringing my twelve year old golden in tomorrow for the same thing. She stopped eating last week and the vet found a mass on her spleen. Tomorrow is her surgery and I have already decided that if it is cancer then I will have her put down so she will never come out of surgery. As hard as it is, it is the right decision to make. I am praying for a miracle. Tonight I probably won't even sleep as it may be my last night with her. Tonight is just filled with lots of love, some belly scratching, a big bone and a lot of prayers.

I'm truly sorry for your loss.

Zoebear, you and your sweet golden are in my thoughts and prayers. Cancer in the spleen can be very aggressive and it is good you have thought things though. My dog had spleen removal surgery and hers was not found to be cancerous. It is hard not to think the worst, but it isn't always cancer. This is a hard surgery though. Hold her tight and I hope you will have many more nights together.

Add me to your miracle and prayer chain.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It sounds like there's a lot of love in your house. Honey sounded like a wonderful dog and family member.

I am so sorry for your loss. We just lost our guinea pig last Wednesday - very similar story. My heart is still breaking from my loss so I am sure you are just as devastated. I am sitting here reading these posts in tears. I hope our little loves are up in Heaven enjoying all their favorite treats. I also thought it was sweet, I think Honey knew she was headed to Heaven and she was kissing her close friend goodbye. The Rainbow Bridge is what keeps me going :)

I pray you get good news. Have you found out anything?

She made it through the surgery! The doctor did not see any signs of cancer when he opened her up. The mass still needs to be sent to pathology. They have a tech staying with her all night long to monitor her as I guess spleen removal is a major operation and they have to make sure her heart is still working properly. If all goes well I will be able to pick her up tomorrow or Saturday. The results of the biopsy will be in by Tuesday. I am not going to worry about that until I get the results. Right now the news is good and I am so thankful.

ZoeBear, I am so glad she made it through the surgery. You are right, it is a very hard surgery. My dog had issues with her heart and needed monitoring for several days and follow up tests. Waiting for the biopsy results seems like it takes forever. I hope the results are favorable for your girl.

Recovery will take some time. Enjoy your quiet time together. When I brought my Tipper home I was told to feed her very small meals several times a day until she got her strength back. She loved scrambled eggs.

I do have one piece of advice. The spleen works as a part of the immune system. After my dog lost her spleen, she got random and bizarre infections frequently. My little dog stayed on antibiotics the majority of her last year. If you even suspect something isn't right, please trust your instincts and get her checked out. Her age and this surgery have compromised her immune system. Treasure the time you have together. Some of my best memories with my little Tipper were our early morning walks watching the sun come up (my dog got many UTIs and needed frequent walks.) I am so happy for you both. And thank you for updating.

If you like Disney, this is a very nice community. :welcome:

Just got back from visiting her and she is doing so great! The vet is very pleased with her recovery. She even ate a little meatball. :thumbsup2

I should be able to bring her home tomorrow. Also, her pre-surgery bloodwork came back perfect other than a high liver count due to the mass but he said that is a great sign.

What good news! You must be so relieved and so happy. Here's to a fast recovery!:woohoo:

I am so happy to report that Zoe's tumor was benign! The Dr. told me yesterday and I just can't believe it. She really beat the odds. As my sister kept telling me, "Well some dogs have to to be in that lower percentage." I am sure glad Zoe is one of them! She is such a brave girlie.:banana::banana:
