I haven't had my number stolen, but I've had my purse stolen and the idiots tried to use my CC's to withdraw cash out of an ATM. I called my CC companies as soon as I could to let them know my cards had been stolen and they asked me when the last time I used it and they took care of it after that. I didn't have to sign anything, but I think the idiots that stole my purse had problems with the ATM and didn't get much money out.
