My dishwasher made a few strange noises this morning.... when I went to check it it had stopped, but I could hear something running. Then I smelled something kind of like a motor burning itself out! OH WELL.....It would have been 10 years old this May. I guess it lived its life!

Any suggestions for a new one? What brand/type to you like? I would really like a QUIET one! Other than that I am not too picky (although I wouldn't spend more than $500!). When we bought the current one it was based on price only (we were building a new house and had no $ to spare!), but other than the noise factor I have had no complaints with it. I knew it wouldn't last forever because my neighbor, who build their house 9 months before us, had the exact same one and they replaced theirs at least 2 years ago!..........................P

I'd only ever buy another Kitchenaid. They last a L-o-n-g time and the one we have has a garbage disposal built in for anything that isn't pre-rinsed. It is quiet enough to be leaning against it on the phone while it is running. The one we took out for this one was a Kitchenaid with Hobart's name also on it. It was about 20 years old and we only ever had to replace a gasket on it in the 10 years we had it. It was LOUD, but cleaned like a champ. We only got rid of it because it didn't match our new decor.

We bought Whirlpool three if not four years ago. I'm not sure of the model, but I looked on Whirlpool's site, and it seems to have all the same features as thier current "Power Clean" model. It's so quiet that sometimes I have to actually look at the LED lights to see what it's doing :) It's great at getting the dishes clean, and I love the rinse and hold feature--wonderful when I have dinner dishes but not enough for a full load. I put them in, do a rinse (no hand rinsing in the sink!) and they are "clean enough" to leave until the next day when I have a full load. I love the fold downs to hold wine glasses steady by the stem, and the top rack adjusts up or down to accomodate larger items up top or below. It also has an air dry option, and a delayed start timer. I also love the large silverware holder that can be put almost anywhere in teh dishwasher. I can't praise this appliance highly enough--it's about the best $400 we ever spent.

I have had pretty good luck with my Whirlpool ones. I have the one that was top of the line 6 years ago when we got it. It could be a little more quiet I guess but I always use the timer feature so it runs during the night. Doesn't bother me then!:D
I have heard recently that you chould take an everyday plate with you to make sure it will fit in the ones you like at the store. My SIL uses big stoneware plates and they don't seem to fit very well in hers. But that's just my opinion.

Consumers Report has Kitchenaid as the best dishwasher listed in their magazine.

KitchenAids are great, but you can get the same model with the Kenmore name for less $$. We have a Kenmore and love it. I have the stainless steel tub, and I'll never go back to plastic again!

I can loan you my 13 year old DD if you want!!!:teeth:

I feel for you - we've got to replace our refrigerator this weekend. I just learned last night that Kenmore, Whirlpool, and KitchenAid are all made by Whilrpool, but the Kenmore's generally give you a lower price for more features. Check out Consumer Reports online (http://www.consumerreports.org) - you'll have to pay for a subscription to see ratings and reviews, but it could save you later (and you'll be shocked at how many time you refer to it throughout the year.)

I love my Kitchenaid, it has the same features as RUDisney's. It is near silent. I can run it and not hear it 5 feet away in the dinette area. If you can get a Kenmore with the same insulating features as the KA for a lower price, go for it. I did not buy this one, it came with the house, but the guy at Sears who sold us our last one (which was a piece of you know what), told us that it's the insulation around it that makes it quiet. I should have listened to him. There is a HUGE difference between a $200 model and a $500 model.

We got a GE profile last April and I'm very happy with it. It replaced the 9 year old Kenmore they put in the house when it was built.
