My dh just left to take my son to the ER

We used to call my son "Croupy Jake". He was hospitalized several times form 4 months to 4 years old for croup. It was always scary, but he was always okay.

Sorry you have to go through this. He will outgrow it.

Well, after a very long night in the ER, Austin is home and he and his daddy are sleeping sound. They didn't get home until around 4 am, so they're exhausted. The doctors gave him a Decadron shot, and a couple of strong breathing treatments. They said the shot should help him for a couple of days, after that if the croup is still there we'll need to see his doctor. They also referred us to the asthma clinic. He's still pretty wheezy, but at least he can breathe again. Thank you for all of your prayers! You guys are the best!

My three year old, Austin, has always had a problem with croup. Every time he gets the slightest cough, it turns croupy, and it always hits out of the blue. Just a little while ago he woke up with his croupy cough, but this time the nebulizer wasn't doing anything for him. My poor little guy just couldn't breathe, and he was so scared. I was freaking out because he was struggling so much. If my dh wasn't home I probably would have called the paramedics, he was that bad. So my dh just grabbed his medic bag, Austin and headed out the door to the ER. Normally I'm very level headed about these things, but having lost two sons to respiratory illnesses, and considering what day this is, I'm just very scared. I know he'll be fine, but still.....thanks for letting me vent...

How scary. He will be fine. I will send good thoughts your way!!

SO glad to hear your little boy is doing better!

If you're like me, there is a part of you that is very grateful that you're married to an EMT or paramedic. My DH has only needed to put on his medic hat one time at home, and it was for me, of all people. I learned a great lesson about steam burns and toothpaste, that day!

Here's am idea. I had croup when I was younger and this used to work. Fill up the bathroom with steam and sit with your son in the steam. My mom used to do this with me many nights when I had croup. I still have to do this when I get a bad cough.
