A nearly full grown puppy. A black Lab named Dexter. He didn't ask me. Just brought this dog home. :confused3 I had a weimie who was psycho and ate AND attacked my kids so I am dog shy to put it lightly. So far this one seems mellow but not sure if he is just a shy dog. He kind of barked at first now he is just kind of sitting around.
Has anyone else ever had a pet just sprung on them like this. No warning? I had said a bunch of times I didn't want another dog so it wasn't like I was hinting this would be a great gift for us.

All I can say to you is - Good Luck!!! :flower:

I love black labs. Most of the ones I have known were really good family dogs. Hopefully this will be the case for you. Sorry you had a bad experience with your other dog. Don't let it scare you away from trying another. Dogs are wonderful additions to a lot of families. They give so much unconditional love. I hope it works out for all of you.

I might be a little peeved at my husband for this solo decision making, but remember it's his fault and not the dog's. ;) Dog sounds like a sweetie, maybe you can give him a chance and deal with your DH later on.

My neighbors have yellow labs and they are great. So I am hopeful about this breed. My kids keep asking me if I like the dog and I have to say yes because I don't want to break their hearts. I will give the dog a chance obviously since he is here now and my kids are all  over the dog. It just came as quite a shock. No phone call to prep me or anything. I am sure once the dog and I bond I will be wondering how I lived without him. I just hope he does ok with the neighbors feeding him while we are at Disneyland and our cabin in December.

my baby (see pic in sig) also a black lab was sprung on me, but we already had other labs so it was more of a gift suprise than a shocking suprise. My family has has many wonderful experiences with labs (all black btw) they are very friendly and playful. Is the dog a rescue or where did he get it? My only suggestion would be to start training the pup some basic commands if he is not already trained (like sit, lie down, kennel (if you will have one)).

My husband got him through work. Apparently he is part of a litter that everyone else got to choose from. He has been through 2 homes already. Because the people couldnt handle more the 2 dogs. So far compared to my weimie this dog is so mellow. I will try and teach him some things tomorrow. So far he likes the backyard alot and won't go upstairs at our house. He supposedly doesn't chew which is a big relief for me. We will see how he does tomorrow once he feels more settled in.

I hope He works out for you

We have two Black labs and they are wonderful additions to our family
One of ours won't do stairs either
and they both like to chew ALOT but they are wonderful with the kids
Hopefully you and Dexter will bond quickly :goodvibes

I too have a black lab, I would say a marshmellow couch potato is a good term to use for him. He loves everyone. Also as a side note the fact that he does not do stairs neither does mine. But he has a case of hip dysphia which did not show up until later on about 6 mths. You may want to get him checked for that during your first visit to the vet.

Good luck, bet you are sucked in and become buddies. :dog2:

My DH did the same thing. He took our 6 yo yellow lab to get shots and came home with a 7 week old black lab - unexpected, unplanned and unprepared for his place in our home. I had been adamant since we euthanized our first dog that I didn't want to have two dogs again, at least not while we are renting.

Diesel is here to stay. He can be very sweet and lovable and at the same time be an energetic menace - as puppies can be.

Good luck to you with your new addition. I hope you fall in love with your little one as I have ours.

I would not be happy with one sprung on me. But, I would have gotten  in no time.

good luck, they are wonderful dogs. Just have patience because they act like puppies for a long time.

Black labs are really, really good dogs in general. I haven't met one yet that wasn't a sweetheart. They also seem to be smart and easier to train.

I've got a golden and she will do stairs only under duress (Ashli gets her upstairs every once in a while and Maggie will go but only because her beloved Ashli is saying 'come on maggie, you can do it' every single step of the way, lol)

Here is a picture of our new doggie Dexter. He is turning out to be a very good boy. I can actually say he is nothing personality wise like the last dog I had. He is a joy to have. Very very lovable!!! And isn't he just cute???

My husband did this to me when we were first married. He brought home a German Shorthaired Pointer, a beautiful dog, but NOT a good fit for our family. She was hyper beyond belief, barked constantly and chewed everything in sight. I love dogs, so I tried to make it work, but she just wasn't the right breed for us. I eventually found her a great home with a family that was a far better fit for her, but I was still so angry at my husband for putting me in the position of being the bad guy. It wasn't fair to me, and it certainly wasn't fair to the dog...

He's learned that lesson thankfully and he knows better now than to bring home any four legged surprises! I hope you have a better experience with Dexter. Good luck :)

We had a yellow lab/Golden mix before we had kids. She loved children so much that she would climb our chain link fence and follow them down the street.
Labradors are wonderful dogs though i like the fluffiness of a golden just a bit more even with snow drifts of dog fur in the corners.
Good luck!
