OK, so I'm packing up my Yankee Candle exchange, and DH says "How do they decide who exchanges with who?" And I looked at him like this  .

How do you guys figure that out? Pull names out of a hat? Inquiring goofballs want to know.:p

My DH asked me the same thing while we were in the Yankee Candle store! I also told him I didn't know, but figured it was kind of a name out of the hat type of deal. Or a triangle thing..
I buy for X, X buys for Z, Z buys for Me.

Who knows! All I know is that I don't think I could host an exchange, but I'm glad someone does!

Funny, DH thought they probably did the "triangle" thing too. I would consider hosting an exchange, but not until I've completely graduated from Exchange School.:teeth:

Well, I've drawn names before. And sometimes I've just given people the next name on the list below theirs. The hard ones are the regional ones like the t-shirt exchange and locally made. I try to give each person a name of someone that doesn't live very close. And I do try to give the veteran's a newbies name so that we aren't exchanging with the same people all of the time. Some times it works and some times it doesn't.

Thanks Kirby. That explains everything.:D And you do a great job!:D

I have heard that some have just pulled names out of a hat and one time I participated in an exchange where, for example, I bought for you and you bought for me; then Suzy bought for Tom and Tom bought for Suzy; then Barbara bought for Dee and Dee bought for Barbara and so on and so forth.

I think it is up to each individual organizer as to how they like to do it. I do have to say that I didn't really care for the second option above, but that is just me. Perhaps someone who has organized an exchange before will see this and post a reply.

For the Pet Exchange I drew names and then edited a little because a few people were sending & receiving to same person.

I have to hand it to the organizers of the big exchanges, I can't tell you how long I spent checking and double checking making sure I did it right. :)

Exchange organizers deserve a big round of applause as they do spend a lot of time and work extra hard to make sure things go smoothly. I have participated in many exchanges and I just want to once again say THANK YOU to all who have/are organizing exchanges for all of us to participate in, I know I for one appreciate it very much! :)

Yeah for the exchange host!!!

I have hosted several different exchanges and have tried a couple of different ways. Pulling names out of a hat, did the picking the names so that the veterans would get newbies and so on.
I view other people's exchanges also and participate in many so I like the idea of putting the newbies and the veterans together the most so that everyone gets more of a surprise and maybe recieve something from a different area then where they usually may recieve something from.

I'm with Kirby.
I keep track....yes I have a list of all 5 YCE I have hosted
You won't send to the same person twice.
I usually do a random draw......and try not to have the same person send to the person they receive from...although sometimes it happens.
Regional are trickier and take more planning...I still do a random draw and work that name down the list until it fits in with things.
