I was toying with the idea of a road trip for my daughter and myself in late july / early august, going up to DC to see my dad and then on to Philadelphia to see his family and then back home. DH doesn't want us to go! He's actually "ordering" us to fly (yeah, like that would ever work  lol
He says he doesn't want his wife and daughter alone on the road. I say I used to drive across country in college by myself in college. DH says I'm worth more to him now than in colleg  I say road trips can be fun and exciting, he says DD would be bored and miserable. Besides I would like to have a car at our destinations. Any mothers take road trips by themselves? Am I crazy?

Yep...we used to do them every summer to different locations.
Great fun!!
And great bonding experience (well, most of the time  )
I miss those trips now that the kids are all grown up.

I've taken several with just me and DS including one to Florida. I have one coming up where I'm driving alone and meeting a friend in St Francisville, Louisiana.

I am takng one in November to WDW with my 2 dd's and my mother. My dh thinks I should fly but knows he won't win the argument. I'm actually looking forward to it.

DD(16) and I take road trips all the time and have since she was little, Disney included! We have always had a great time together!
DS and DH get a little jealous, I think....but I don't believe they'd enjoy OUR kind of road trips! We have sing alongs and weird snack attacks! LOL!

Go, enjoy yourself!

We have always taken trips as a family, but since our two oldest are now in college and my husband can't always take time from work, my 12 year old daughter and I have taken several road trips by ourselves. Last August we drove from Maine to Jamestown, New York to explore Lucille Ball's hometown. I'm a huge Lucy fan and now that I've hooked my daughter on "I Love Lucy", we couldn't wait to take our trip. We had a blast! It was about an 11 hour drive with several stops. We spent three nights in Jamestown and took a side trip to Cleveland to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

It was an enjoyable trip because we just did whatever we wanted to do, and ate whenever and wherever we felt like it. We spent time in the hotel swimming pool, something that the other family members never enjoy doing, and we did a little shopping. The drive itself was nice, too. We loaded up my Beetle with snacks, soft drinks, and good music, and we rolled the windows down and sang at the top of our lungs! The rest of the family never would have put up with that! My daughter brought along a few books and magazines to help pass the time, and she brought her Discman for the times that she didn't want to listen to my choice of music!

We had so much fun that we took another mother-daughter trip last month. We drove to Washington DC and spent a few days sightseeing and shopping.

I bet you and your daughter would have a good time together. For peace of mind, I made sure I had my cell phone with me and I planned the trips so that we would not be driving, or arriving, anywhere late at night. I made sure to call home when we arrived at our destination and always let someone know when to expect us home. I also have AAA membership in case anything goes wrong with the car.

Go and enjoy!

I do it all the time (in reverse of yours) I drive from Central VA down to Boynton Beach. A lot!

I also drive to Orlando and to Panama City, my family is all over Florida...

It's usually just me and my 2 kids (8-6) they have a ball!

Tell him you love that he is worried, but that you are driving. Then do whatever you can to make him comfortable with it.

I would not allow DW to drive herself or our children on an extended trip :teeth:

Well it looks like we may be leaning towards flying into DC, renting a car, staying there for a while, then driving to Philly. I toyed with the idea of the Amtrak, because I thought DD would like it, but boy is that expensive! Of course, maybe I'll just cut out the Philly part and spend some extra time at my Dad's lake house. Can you tell I'm indecisive? LOL

All the time...I make the trip to FL with the kids 3-4 times a year. My first long trip on my own with DS was from CT to Calif in 1995...he was 2 1/2 and remembers suprisingly much of it :)
I love to drive...and detest flying.
I tried the Amtrack Auto Train once...although it was fun and adventurous, I hardly got any sleep...which made it tough to drive to CT from VA the next morning.

I love a road trip!!! Not only do I drive to WDW every year solo (ok so I do take the kids) we also do spontanious road trips as well.

doing our first one June 12-15 .. driving from orlando to bowling green Ky and back !

I drove from S.E. PA to WDW and back by myself a couple of years ago.
